Activist Calls For Ann Murray To Resign

Broward School Board Member Ann Murray has yet to publicly comment on the reprimand she received for allegedly making a racist remark, but she did try to answer questions from Freda Stevens, a political activist and and chairwoman of the Democratic Black Caucus of Broward County, about the controversy.

murrayann31.jpg
Murray
The school board member, who has admitted using the N-word in derogatory fashion, probably should have just kept her mouth shut.

After what sounds like a rambling conversation in which Murray dug in her heels on the issue, Stevens put out a letter calling on her to resign her school board seat. She says she will publicly demand Murray's resignation at today's school board meeting.

Stevens said that Murray went on a "rant" when asked to explain her use of the term "nigger heaven" to describe rowdy nosebleed seats at a Dolphins football game. Murray admitted making the remark while working as a supervisor in the school board's transportation department in 2007 in front of several black bus drivers that she was supervising. One of the upset drivers said Murray had used the N-word multiple times in the past.

Stevens says that when she asked Murray about the allegations on the phone, the school board member told her:

"You all do not know if I have black blood in my family. I cannot make up for what happened 400 years ago. I know that some of you all are just sensitive but I have been called names, whitey and honky. I just brushed it off."

Then Murray, according to Stevens, brought up a book called Black and White, which she said explained why some people believe they are superior to the black race.

There is a book titled Black and White about race relations, but I'm not sure if that's the one referenced by Murray. I do know that Murray's purported statement about slavery exhibits great ignorance of American history. The Civil War, of course, was fought less than 150 years ago and segregation in the south didn't end until the 1960s.

"I expected her to come back with at least some contrition," said Stevens. "But she starts by saying you all don't know if I have black blood. I said, 'I don't think in those terms. Blood isn't black or white, it's red.' You could hear it in her voice that she really thinks that way. It's her mindset. This isn't a one-time slip.

"I could not believe what I was hearing. I literally could not believe this woman was having this conversation. I had to be dreaming."

Inside, read Stevens' open letter to Murray.

March 20, 2011

The Honorable Ann Murray
School Board Member District 1
School Board of Broward County, Fl
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301

Dear Ann Murray, School board member:

I write this letter asking for your immediate resignation from the School Board for use of racial slurs and more importantly your cavalier attitude about the matter. As you know, Bob Norman of the Pulp leaked evidence where you repeatedly used the "N" word to refer to African Americans when speaking to coworkers as a School Board Employee. You have boldly admitted using the term "nigger"multiple times without even an ounce of contrition.

On March 19, 2011, I called you to give you a fair chance to clear your name following Bob Norman's report. Instead of you giving me any reason to believe you have seen the error of your ways, after boldly admitting making the comments, you went into a rant stating,

"You all do not know if I have black blood in my family. I cannot make up for what happened 400 years ago. I know that some of you all are just sensitive but I have been called names, too. I have been called whittie [sic] and honkey. I just brushed it off."

When asked to explain what you meant by black blood, you stated, "Have you ever read the book Black and White?" I said, "No, I never heard of such a book. I do not think in terms of black and white. People are people to me, especially children. Blood is not black or white, it is red!"

You went on to state, "The book Black and White explains why white people feel they are superior to blacks." When asked, what that book has to do with your use of the "N" word, you failed to explain further. Therefore, I ended the call by telling you that I would call for your immediate resignation from the school board.

Broward County Public Schools is the sixth largest school system in the country. Our African American children are underrepresented and performing below their counterparts. We are at such a critical time in our county (Broward County) amid the political corruption scandals, daily arrests of elected officials, and the grand jury report, it is imperative that you- School Board Member Ann Murray immediately resign or be removed from the school board by the Office of the Governor for failure to fulfill your duties as a public official. Ms. Murray, you have failed the children of Broward County Public Schools and are not fit to sit on the dais one more day. You deserve an "F" in character. The school board is no place for a racist, especially an unrepentant one.

Ms. Murray I call upon you to do the honorable thing for the children of Broward County Public Schools by resigning your position effective immediately. Should you fail to do the right thing and resign, then I am prepared to go to the Governor of the great state of Florida and demand your immediate removal. Furthermore, I am prepared to take any and all legal action against the School Board including a civil action in both state and federal court should you remain in office. You have until the close of business today or legal action will commence.

Please govern yourself accordingly.

Sincerely,

Freda Stevens, Vice President
Democratic Black Caucus of Broward County

BY CARLI TEPROFFcteproff@miamiherald.com

Susan Stocker/Sun SentinelBroward School Board member Ann Murray apologized Tuesday for making racial slurs in the past.A day after she was asked to resign from the Broward School Board for making racial slurs, Ann Murray issued a written apology:“In 2007, I used a word I should have never used,’’ Murray wrote. “ “Minutes after saying it, I apologized to my co-workers and subordinates. Eventually, I received a very strong reprimand from my supervisor. To this day, I have the deepest regret for the incident and the pain I may have caused others. I ask the African American community and all communities who suffer with the ugliness of bigotry to accept my sincerest apology. I pray for healing and forgiveness from those I have offended as we move toward a new chapter and forever close the old.’’

Ron:

Happy New Year! This is the type of dialog that should have occurred before you published anything about me. Can we agree, everyone deserves a fair chance?

As to your questions:

1) Yes, I was invited to speak at the Davie/Cooper City Republican Club meeting. However, I did not attend. Instead, I attended the Davie/Cooper City Democratic Club Meeting. I did not want to continue speaking at the GOP meetings knowing that my decision was to change parties. I changed my party after notifying members of the Republican party. When given candidate questions, I simply could not support the Republican position on issues such as (Marriage Amendment, War In Iraq, stem cell research, etc..). The Republican party recommended a consultant who offered me pictures in the Black Republican Magazine, endorsements, a possible job in the future, and money to stay in the race. Honestly, I do not know if he was really speaking on behalf of the party or just puffing smoke. In either case, I had to be true to who I am inside. My convictions simply would not allow me to go along to get along. I maintain some friendships in the Republican party; but, it was just not for me.

2) Why Dem vs. Republican? or Why do I fit in the Dem Party vs GOP? The answer is simple. The democratic party is all I know. I was an active democrat for 14 years. We are talking about a difference of 14 years as a democrat to 3 years as a republican. It's like living in Florida all your life and then going away to college. Eventually, one will come back home.

On the issues:I believe in equality for all. I endorsed fairness for all families and joined Florida Red and Blue prior to your blog. I believe we can really Leave No Child Behind by ensuring private schools are held accountable, too. If we must have choice then let's give parents a BETTER CHOICE FOR A BETTER EDUCATION! GAACS created a program called A+ Platinum School Program which is an answer to the No Child Left Behind debacle. As a educator, I believe it is wrong to siphon money from any scored public school and give it to parents to send their children to an unrated private school. All schools receiving state/federal funds should be held accountable for the education of Florida's children. I support middle class families that work long hours but still can not afford healthcare. I believe there should be healthcare for all. My mother takes 15 pills a day and pays over $400 a month in health insurance. I believe the taxpayers should come before corporations, lobbyists, and special interest groups. We must fund social security and stop the Republican agenda to privatize everything. It sets an unfair balance. I believe the War in Iraq is one of the greatest forms of genocide in our nation's history. We must bring our troops home immediately. The president has asked for enormous amounts of money to fund a war that should have never began. We should protect the American people from real terrorists by funding our first responders. 9/11 happened in New York not Iraq! We need open, fair, and honest government; as well as fiscal responsibility on the part of our president. These are just some of the reasons I am a democrat.

Thank you for asking the questions and giving me a "fair chance to respond".

FredaFreda Stevensphone: 954.802.3553freda@fredastevens.comA challenger to state Rep. Evan Jenne (D) Dania is, in fact, running a scam.Freda Sherman Stevens had planned to run against Jenne as a Republican, the party she is registered in.But she decided instead to challenge Jenne within the Democratic Party, after switching parties.

The Supervisor of Elections Office said her party affiliation wasn't clear because of duplicate registrations under slightly different names..She had a Democratic registration listing her her as Freda Sherman-Stevens - with a hyphen in her name -- and a Republcian registration listing her as Freda Sherman Stevens with no hyphen.

Mary Cooney, director of public service at the Elections Office, said Sherman Stevens sent in a request, dated Nov. 16, to change her Republican registration to Democratic. The office received that request on Nov. 19.

She is a democrat now. Look at John Rodstrom, Bill Markham, Hillary Clinton, Bob Butterworth, and many others who are great dems now. They were all republicans at one point-asshole.

You are just WORRIED because you know Evan is going to lose.

I can not stand him. I am so glad someone is running against Evan. I am sending her a check today. Make that two checks.

2:58 PM Anonymous said... Open letter to Ron Mills

Dear Ron Mills:

Have you ever been attacked for your political position, gender, race, sexual orientation, or simply you’re right to be whom you are inside? If so, then you should be able to relate to my point of view.

We have not been properly introduced; my name is Freda Stevens, Democrat for Florida House District 100. Ordinarily, I would not dignify negative blogs, attack ads, or push polling with a response but there seems to be a call for an answer to your blog, “Is Freda Sherman Stevens running a scam on broward voters?”

The answer is a resounding, “No!” For starters, there is no hyphen in my last name. Some married women use a hyphen in their name and others do not. It was a common mistake which the Supervisor of Elections has already corrected.

I do not have two active voter registrations. No one can have two active voter registrations. The minute anyone files a name, party, or address change the SOE generates a new registration card. It also updates the previous registration. Broward county voters are smart enough to know better. My voter registration is valid and I am a registered Democrat. I was a democrat for 14 years up to April 2004.

Most people already knew I was a republican for three years. I first announced my candidacy as a republican. The only thing that matters now is what I plan to do as a Democratic elected official. Senator Hillary Clinton used to be a republican. Ask the thousands of Broward voters who plan to vote for her, if they care!

It will not affect broward voters’ decision to elect me on August 26, 2008. The main reason is because I am the best candidate. Neither race, gender, nor political party are a reason to elect anyone. This mindset is what’s wrong with politics in the first place.

So, why did I take the time to respond? You are a board member of the Dolphin Democratic Caucus, which is an organization I support none-the-less. One of my best childhood friends is a lesbian and lives with her partner.

You are also the Area 9 leader. You represent democratic leadership in many ways. It is wrong to attack a fellow democrat, especially as a leader.

I am happy to be back home-in the Democratic Party. With exception to your blog, democrats have received me with open arms.

Democratically yours,

Freda

I think this whole thing reaks of a set-up and that ebing Ms Stevens wanting to look like a hero in this whole matter. By no means what Ms Murray said is excusable, she has admitted to what she said atleast she didnt lie like other politicians have done in the past. But who is this Ms Stevens that we as taxpayers are to take her word to be true, well I did some research of this Ms freda Stevens and she has a questionable past as long as the length of my vehicle. Its been reported she is under the microscope for mis-handling of money? Ms Stevens honesty has been called into question more times according to reseach on more times then I can count on both hands. Does anyone other then the word of Ms Stevens have personal knowledge or was there when this phone call took place between Ms Stevens and Ms Murray? I would like to see there side of there was anyone else present during the phone call. And I would also have to question other parties involoved in this matter of what took place in 2007. I would also like to know why were only the most stinging parts of the report release Mr Norman and not the whole report for all to read? This would also make me question your reason behind doing this article about Ms Murray. I believe there are a few with some personal acts to grind with Ms Murray and tarnishing a good womans reputation is not only not right but dsirespectful. So until I see a statement released by Ms Murray for her account of this whole incident then I think all should hold there opinions of Ms Murray until things are told, cause so far I see a known questionable person with a very questionable past and people believing her word to be truth.

It is the truth, and that's acknowledged even by the head of the School Board. It's in Ms. Murray's personnel file from the time of her previous employment. She had been reprimanded and threatened with further disciplinary action or termination if it happened again, but that was it. That is in regards to one incident of using the "n" word in front of co-employees, but she is alleged to have used the word on other occasions. The matter here is whether she should resign of face further action on an old issue from previous employment, either by this school board or even by the governor, according to what Ms. Stevens wrote in her letter.

justplaintired

My God how did she get on the school board in this day and age. Ok Ok Ok there are people out there who still use this word to try to inflict harm to the spirit of a people. When an adult that is in charge of the education of our children use such a word it is dispiriting. The fact that even if she thought it was a fitting description, she ought to have the common sense and restraint not to use it. In fact I have always heard the seats in th higher parts a stadium or arena referred to as the nosebleed section and that description is more than enough to convey the poor location of the seats. The use of that word was only for her tittilation and amusement, it demonstrate that she is caught up in "the good old days" and truly reflects her moral shortcomings

Off topic - Miriam Oliphant couldn't get voting right and you are going to allow her to counsel children? I am so sick of this buddy system bullshit of incompetents. Notter Needs To Resign. It's amazing this arrogant @#$%& still has a job. It says a lot for the members of the School Board.

@AndrewM - Why is it only being a racist when non black people use it around black people? what about other races? I am tired of the race card being played day in and day out. Please re-read the definition of racism

AndrewM
AndrewM

1.a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.2.a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.3.hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

All that Ann Murray is accused of doing is using a nasty and derogatory word. It's not acceptable, but it's an allegation about a word used in the past. I don't think that rises to a demand for a resignation or school board action. It just rises to some questioning and putting her on the spot at the moment. Who knows? Perhaps she'll ultimately answer with some assertions about school children and school employees being entitled to specific services based on race. But for now, she's not necessarily a racist. Just accused of repeating the expression "n- heaven" some time in the past. All I can tell you is that I wasn't there to hear her say it.

I can be a little prejudiced myself about this. After all, she's Irish, she's from Boston... I mean, please. The entire allegation doesn't surprise me. But I do think that letter from Freda Stevens is over the top at this point.

Ann Murray is from Boston??? and she is Irish??? Well, what did you expect wihen you started lettin' the micks in? She probably going to turn out to be Catholic, too. Anybody know if she is black curtain or white curtain? "Cause them white curtain micks were apologists for Hitler before getting their favorite son, a raving heterosexual (not that there is anything wrong with that) elected President. . . . . Of course, it could just be a front for the kikes. They've been known to go that route before.

lol, exactly. We can spiral into the outer limits with this. There's just a general air of animosity about the whole thing in regards to Freda Stevens' letter and the allegations. An admission and an apology might be nice, but I have my doubts that any of these individuals could be considered the classiest around. Perhaps I'm suggesting that we lower our expectations, which isn't perhaps the best advice. By the way, that outrage and rhetoric from white Boston residents during the school busing/integration controversy a couple of decades or so was really horrible.

There's no argument here. People that go around publicly calling people "niggers" are not role models for our children and don't belong on any school board.

They're on school boards all over the place. There are stories about nut job school board members all over the country all the time. We could do a lot worse, only our corruption may be somewhat more complex than the usual county school board.

A racist isn't somebody who thinks it's OK to use foul and offensive language and name-calling around black co-workers and others. That's just somebody being crass, aggressive, and, well, not classy. It's ugly, yes. It's also not appropriate. Now drop it. This is a stupid issue. Wait 'til her term is up and vote for somebody else.

If Murray were truly a racist, she would be advocating or refrain from advocating for school issues and programs based on the race of students and parents. That doesn't appear to be the issue here, and there are questionable individuals, dirtballs and outright nefarious souls throughout our political structure. This doesn't rise to the level of pressing Murray about it or demanding a resignation or school board action.

By the way, in the Democratic primary when Murray first ran for that seat, I voted for Rick Saltrick. So, I did my part, and I'm always very polite to Ms. Murray when I see her. Get over it and move on. We have elections for a reason as well as prosecutors for a reason. If there's some billionaire who wants to fund a recall petition drive, whether it's to directly initiate a recall election or to put the recall option into the constitution, then go call up your billionaire. In the meantime, shaking the trees in regards to the school board shouldn't be hinging on allegations of some remark in the past or emails insinuating affairs or other stuff that may be indicative of corruption or incompetence but fails to directly find and confront those bigger issues.

I truly think the bigger issue here is some disgruntled former politico with a questionable past in regards to her own campaign writing a letter and demanding a resignation about something like this. Yeah, the issue at hand is uncomfortable and may be rather nasty, but move on all the same. Race relations are going to continue to be touchy for a while, and few people around here these days consistently demonstrate a decent amount of class. Let's expect that Ann Murray demonstrates a degree of sensitivity and professionalism from now on, not years ago at a baseball stadium or whatever. We could decimate every public body if we concentrate on matters of the past like this.

You make some good points, but I'm not sure it's right to call this a "stupid issue." Once it's been brought to the public's attention, other considerations kick in, as several have noted. Whether any of Murray's votes thus far could be called "racist" isn't really the point. Maybe no opportunity to disadvantage black kids has presented itself. But we do know that her attitude doesn't permit a whole lot of optimism on her future conduct or on her qualifications for the job.

Meanwhile, one has to wonder what chain of events occurred before the letter from Freda Stevens was written. From what's been reported about her, it seems unlikely that she was the author of that literate, polite piece. Yet she must have agreed to let the letter go out and perhaps signed it. There's a back story here.

AndrewM
AndrewM

Yes, perhaps, but the letter essentially doesn't provide a reason for Murray to resign or for the Board to take action, let alone the Governor- other than because of the letter writer having taken offense to alleged comments and being unhappy with the response to the allegation. I think I may simply be feeling rather cynical because your assertion that "her attitude doesn't permit a whole lot of optimism on her future conduct or on her qualifications" sounds like an awful lot of people around here where I live, in Broward County, in Florida, in the United Sates of America.

skydove
skydove

The letter served to keep public attention on the incident. A savvy person would know that a direct appeal to the governor to oust Murray would elicit a canned, by-the-book response like the one All That Glitters got -- and she'd respectfully asked that Scott simply continue to speak out. So what use was the rhetoric except to incite decent people to deplore the incident? Without knowing more of the facts, questions like that are hard to answer.

Sadly, there will be those that do use a racial slur. It may be only because of a very bad habit or just a lack of class. However, I have always admired when someone has made a mistake, to stand up, admit their wrong doing and make a sincere apology and a vow to do all in their power to never make the same or similar mistake again. Now, I also believe we are all good and forgiving. However, I never see people in the public do this. For some strange reason, they just like corporations believe it is a sign of weakness or worse, they will give a corporate response, chuck full of " It is regrettable" or It is Unfortunate, or the ultimate slap in the face....we recognize our actions have made you feel ( fill in the blank ) and FOR THAT we are truly sorry! Hey, how about a " I screwed up!" I stepped on my dick/air hose/crank, whatever! But alas they won't, never will...just like Clinton never had sex with " THAT" woman, and Ken Jenne never did anything wrong, he just made a mistake in judgement, or Eggletion " regrets his actions, the list goes on and on. I do not know Feda Stevens and I do not know Ann Murray, but I do know someone is wrong and an apology is warranted. Ann, stand up and say,in 2007 I used the N word in public and for that I am truly sorry. I am sorry for the fact that the use of that word is demeaning and hateful to many people, of all races. My conduct was deplorable and I was disciplined for that occurrence. I have learned from my lack of judgement and have moved on. I have not used the word since and vow never to use any word that would cause anyone undo harm. I have moved on and hop we everyone can as well. Now I will no longer address this issue as it has been dealt with and I have accept full responsibility. Now, Ann, I don't know you, but if I read that you have done this or similar words, you will have my and many others respect, otherwise, you will be a target of continued disgust.

What do you think is more racist...a few words bandied about four (4!) years ago by a woman who was not even an elected official at the time, or an official decision to rehire a person whose main qualification in whatever she has done in public life till now is her skin color? And just who was passed over so that this incompetent individual could again be employed at taxpayer expense? Aren't they the real victims of racism and discrimination here? Or, if you like, aren't they the ones being treated like "n---s"----whatever their skin color? Bob, why are you silent on this?

Freda Stevens is a known compulsive liar! This is a woman who ran for office claiming to be a successful business woman and then a few weeks later claimed she was indigent when she tried making up a bogus lawsuit after she got crushed in the campaign. She owes money all over town and has a habit of disapperaring when things get really rough for her. Regardless of what Ann Murray may have said, having Freda involved is enough to question the entire thing!

You’d think, lawyers would know the drill: be nice, don’t talk, ask for a lawyer.

More often than not, lawyers forget their training when arrested. That is, they try to talk their way out of trouble instead of shutting up and asking for a lawyer. In fact I heard of one lawyer, on his second DUI arrest, not only talked but he refused the breath test as well. Very dumb, as refusal is the worst option. It carries a one year revocation of license and juries later hear about and hold it against the accused.

One lawyer was a perfect gentleman with a drinking problem. He was a public defender and had two separate DUI cases. For one we set up the treatment option, known as a deferred prosecution. This allows the case to remain pending for five years, and if the treatment is completed with no other arrests or alcohol violations, the case is dismissed. He was successful. On his other case, I managed to get it dismissed due to a speedy trial violation. He was quiet, unassuming and followed my advice.

Then there are the lawyers who talk themselves into trouble. I teach criminal trial advocacy at a local law school, and one of my former students hired me. He got arrested when a friend of his was being investigated for DUI. He had walked over to the scene of his friend’s arrest and tried to intervene. He kept pushing his card into the officer’s hand and tried to engage him in a conversation. The officer kept telling him to leave the scene of the investigation. Finally, after several warnings to leave, the officer arrested him for obstruction. This was a valid arrest, since for safety and other reasons, the police are entitled to be left alone when they are working a case. I had to beg the prosecutor for a dispositional continuance (good behavior, etc., and then case dismissed) by pointing out that he was still an over-exuberant law student.

A much less typical but amazing case was that of another law student. He was studying for a final exam and was disturbed by some teenagers riding dirt bikes in a vacant lot next to his apartment. He asked them to be quiet and they wouldn’t. So he went back to his apartment and came down with a tiny keyring gun, that actually fired a real, but very small bullet. He pointed it in the air at the bike riders and they, being delinquents themselves, began yelling “felony, felony!” Within a few minutes he was arrested and booked for assault with a firearm. After I worked the case a bit, he pled to a misdemeanor assault and eventually had his record cleared.

Another time I represented an out of state lawyer on a hit and run charge. He told the police he never hit anyone and that is why he left the scene of the accident. Unfortunately there were matching dents on both cars, so he decided to pay for the damages. Foolishly I trusted this lawyer and used part of the trust account (my fees) to pay off the claim. He never paid me back. I never sued him on the debt because he was the type who would have counter sued me on some trumped up claim just to cause trouble.

The lawyers and judges who get arrested, plead and take their medicine like everyone else can be admirable. I know of a former prosecutor who had gone to a sporting event. Upon his return to his parked car, he discovered a tow truck driver had it jacked up and ready to go. He lost it with the tow truck driver and ended up punching him in the nose. He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault. He pled guilty at arraignment and then tendered his resignation as a prosecutor. The elected prosecutor refused to accept the resignation. I don’t blame him–why fire a mensch?

And, so we see the two Ps, plagiarism and politics are brought together, yielding, as always, Pee-Pee which, when we get this trickle-down thingy worked out, will result in a rising tide of corruption which, or so we are told, serves to lift all the boats of the Republik (banana) of Broward.

Allow me to conclude with a quotation from the great Bob Norman, the esteemed Carl Hiaasen and, hell, just about everyone else who has ever lived here, (Cummon, you know you've said it.) "You can't make this s---f up."
