Reader: The Real Taboo at Sex Clubs Is Frank STD Discussion

Over the past few days, we've received quite a bit of feedback about this week's cover story, about the massive swinger subculture in South Florida. There have been emails, letters, and more than 50 comments between the Broward and Miami readers. We've heard from offended family members, excited swinger rookies, and plenty of religious enthusiasts ready to damn every soul in every sex club.

But perhaps the most interesting yet comes from a poster identifying as "Herpes Helen." Concerned less with the depravity and more with the possible spread of disease, Helen says: "The REAL taboo in these clubs is not any sex act; rather, it is the free, out-in-the-open-club discussion that many of your fellow clubgoers are herpetic, for example, and not going to tell you."

This is the entire comment:

"It's not the sex that worries me, it's the diseases. Asymptomatic herpes sufferers, for example, shed the virus 24/7. Then, HSV sufferers (whether or not genital warts show) are also ready to give others another "gift that keep on giving." The list of STDs goes on and on. As described in the article, there are bodily fluids all over Trampeze's back room, and those poor Haitian cleaners should be wearing proper Hazmat suits.

"Pretending -- by the sin of STD-facts omission, as this article does -- that the sex-club goers are simply at play in different-themed venues is puerile reporting, much like discussing mammograms and never detailing the inherent radiation.

"The REAL taboo in these clubs is not any sex act; rather, it is the free, out-in-the-open-club discussion that many of your fellow clubgoers are herpetic, for example, and not going to tell you.

"Did the reporter query pharmacists in the area of each of these clubs to find out how many Valtrex prescriptions they fill in a month? No, that would take time...and the work of a professional journalist.

"BTW, one SF reporter did so, interviewing one SF pharmacist whose store fills over 6,000 Valtrex prescriptions per month.

"Enjoy the buffet!"

This is absolutely FALSE.  Don't give in to hysteria people.

Herpes is one of the most misunderstood std's out there. The simple truth is that 90% of the adult population has it but doesn't realize it. If you ever get a fever blister you have herpes. The only difference between mouth herpes and the other kind is simply where it's located. It's the same virus, resting at the back of your brain untill something triggers it and you get an outbreak. There is no difference in oral herpes and the other kind, just the location, and there is no cure for herpes, though drugs such as Valtrax can stop an ourbreak once you get one. Odds are these wrestlers already had the virus and why the big to do here is beyond me. You may know more about herpes on the dating and support site POZmingle. Good luck to you all!

Most people have herpes/hiv/hpv may feel lonely and shamed. But 70 million are afflicted with STD in the U.S. alone and an estimated over 400 million worldwide. There is an exclusive community PozSpaces, com for singles and friends with STD. If you just need to find someone to talk to or need help or advice, this is the best place. Never feel lonely again!

I have herpes and I am an engineer who works for the largest herpes dating and support site herpesmate . com. I have to tell you a secret, you can choose not to believe me. But the truth is that this site has more than 1,880,000 members and about 80% members are good looking in my estimation.Unfortunately, STD rates soar worldwide and most people with STDs don't even know that they have them. The government should grant more money for STD education to lower the rates of STD transmission.
