• Courthouses are for criminals and attorneys, basically one in the same. I have never stepped inside the Broward courthouse and doubt that I ever will. That is also true for an estimated one million Broward residents. It is sick that voters say no to this project and our voice is circumvented. Justifying spending any money on a new courthouse is wrong, foolish..and well ...criminal. Is there anyway to stop this madness?

• By my reckoning, there are now criminal investigations in progress against Lamberti by FDLE and the Broward SAO. The Florida Ethics Commission is also looking at him. There is an FBI investigation of Lt. Benjamin and they may also be checking out Wheeler. Schnakenberg is under criminal investigation. Miami-Dade PD, FBI, Homeland Security and Secret Service are all conducting their own investigations regarding BSO conduct at the 2010 Super Bowl. Miami is looking into BSO’s conduct at the Orange Bowl the year earlier. The sheriff's XO recently had a newspaper article devoted to his peculiar background and we learned that the Florida Police Standards Board is quite interested and likely to take severe action for failure to follow appropriate state statutes. So do we get any reasonable, literate or candid responses from the sheriff and his staff. No! Instead we are fed a steady dose of the usual fodder to try to divert the attention of taxpayers away from the rampant misconduct and incompetence. Here's a list I came up with in about 3 minutes: Unlicensed contractor enforcement; Shred-a-Thons; Buckle Up campaigns; DUI warnings and checkpoints; Rides and worn-out reminders about the Sgt. Reyka case; Smoke alarm reminders; Daylight Saving reminders; Anti-Bullying tips; Operation Medicine Cabinet; ego driven minor league radio shows, etc. There is nothing wrong with any of these in themselves. But a steady and increased diet of these recycled fluff pieces is a deliberate and insulting attempt to divert attention from the really pressing issues. The media knows it but has done little to ask the hard questions; the people know it, see it, smell it and don’t like it. And Lamberti and his staff must know it because they are running around like an air raid signing up personal attorneys before the fall. Why not some legitimate answers to the questions? How can AL constantly find time to attend tuxedo affairs at big money homes and get his photo in the slick social pages at least twice a month? How can he constantly attend skybox concerts for his favorite Italian performers and cavort at every useless law enforcement seminar and convention across the country, including all the little FBINA meetings but he has no time to truthfully address the integrity allegations that are running rampant and destroying our agency? Is this how an elected public servant, in law enforcement, no less, who created a motto of “Pride in Service With Integrity” conducts business? Not on my dime - and not with my vote.

• The Art In Public Places program was established to provide art in public places, but not to the detriment of the tax payers. Right now people are losing jobs, pensions, health benefits and their homes. It is not a good time to pull out a dusty old proclamation in order to defend spending money on something unnecessary. Would any reasonable parent buy a pretty statue for their foyer, so guests could be impressed, when they were having trouble paying their mortgage? Would they cancel their children's health care to add dramatic lighting around the home in an "integrated art" method just because it is pretty? Come on Stacy, people don't just go to Washington to see the architecture. They most certainly don't go to the Supreme Court building just to see the "integrated art" work. It is important that someone remind you that decision...legally binding and precedent setting decisions are being made in those buildings. Those decisions are what students talk about in civics class, history class and for many Law School. They talk about the art work in elective classes, if the "elect" to give a shit about architecture. You should, but do not have the ability to, feel ashamed of the ass you made of yourself during that conversation. And while we are on the subject of the nature of your argument, Stacy, we already know that the "experts" were hand picked by the commission and the lobbyists friends. Also we know that the committees who discuss these issues and bring recommendations are mostly plants who already know the recommendation the commission is waiting for long before the committee ever convenes (check spelling). Stacy, you are out of touch and this will not create jobs. The firm selected (as in already a done deal) has work for any of the people who would work on this new courthouse and art. It will be Stiles or Cummings or Moss...these people have their workforces in place or will reach out to day laborers as the often do. If by, 200 people you mean jobs will be created for non-skilled laborers, then you are again off base on how this BOONDOGGLE will put the people back to work. Everyone now knows that the work awarded by the county and the school board is nothing less than organized crime and to cloak that in the argument that the commission will be creating jobs is a joke...just like you Stacy!!! • Keep the people informed of what is really happening at those sham meetings in Davie. Luis was behind a few other shady decisions, like the mobile land purchase using Reserve funds. He and Paul have been in the pocket of other interests and running over anyone in Davie who questions them. Take notice of people who have been forced to "resign" recently. Recordings go off, and questions from audience members at meetings are completely ignored by the Council. Disgraceful

• Since the people of Broward County have been paying a debt on a general obligation bond, for over 23-years, for a (public safety complex/) NEW courthouse (and just got a marble palace for the sheriff & a measly courthouse parking garage, but no t-shirt to flaunt how they had been so scr*w*d), why should the citizenry trust that the commission will actually build a NEW courthouse this time around? Additionally, if another round of debt needs to be issued for another promised NEW courthouse (that we are being lectured must be built), why should the NEW courthouse be built at that same location? If the need exists for a NEW courthouse, how were other less expensive locations scouted-out? When did the commission make the decision that the limited area on the New River is the best place (above all others) for a NEW courthouse? Was any thought given to restoring the original (historic) courthouse building? What effort was put into the thought process of relocating -- and converting the present courthouse area into an area to support the growing college developments and expanding entertainment area & arts community? The original courthouse building used to house county commissioners and their hearings. Was any thought entertained about relocating the county office space into the larger (original, but renovated) courthouse building, if a new courthouse were to be constructed elsewhere (thus freeing up moneys used for spaces other than the governmental center -- which is the former downtown Burdine’s retail building, which the city, as the county seat, could use to keep all of its records in one place -- rather than using space in several buildings in various locations). Was there ever any request to which the entire community could have put in a proposal? Was the courthouse proposition made available to EVERYONE? Could any person participate in the bidding process? The only limitation to the location of the courthouse would be that it would have to be located in (the seat of county government) the City of Fort Lauderdale. Aren’t there other locations in the city that could have been evaluated (that may have been at a lesser cost)? What about the location that had been discussed, several years ago, as a location for the Marlin’s stadium -- in the northwest section of the meeting of I-95 & Broward Blvd? That was all public land ten years ago. Why can’t the courthouse be placed closer to the sheriff’s (public safety complex) headquarters (down the street from the city’s stationhouse), in a location easily accessible by train and right off the I-95 interchange? When making the statement “The truth will come out about this proposal,” did Stacy Ritter guarantee what she said? Will the public be allowed to know the truth about the development of this project, that would benefit so many that bought property in this downtown location? How many commissioners and their cronies will enrich themselves with the building of the new courthouse in that same location? Where exactly is the truth to be found in this proposal????

• I like Ceffy and think he does a good job. However, the art isn't the main story or main reason for being pissed at Ritter -- the real reason is the way the new courthouse came to be in the first place; i.e. without a vote of the people! The art work stuff would be integrated in the EXACT SAME MANNER, if the people had voted on same; i.e. the county requires the 2% of budget for integrated art work. Short of a vote to change the requirement, which is not likely, the result would have been the same. Also, the people already did not want to spend the money at all. So, now that we are doing it, may as well make it look as good as we can. The old courthouse really doesn't have any soul. Even the Miami courthouse has a touch of cool architecture going on - the interior is old, but also quaint and courthousey.... Our courthouse looks like an old office building inside and out. Look at Palm Beach - that's some nice, over the top stuff there. I certainly wish the people did approve a reasonably priced courthouse, but that just didn't happen. • It appears that Cefalo doesn't understand Broward County's long-standing Art In Public Places program (established in 1976). Two percent of construction dollars are set aside for art. Agree with it or not, it's not something that Stacy Ritter and other commissioners just made up in an effort to waste money. Nor do they select the artists (at least not until the final round) - a panel of artists do that. The $610,000 is a fraction of what the program normally calls for spending. Pulp recently highlighted some questionable examples but there are good applications. Decorative terrazzo comes to mind. A public building needs durable flooring anyway and $610,000 buys a lot of flooring. It's essentially just a construction cost at that point. I understand those that think now is not a good time for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on art but you only build a new courthouse every 50 years or so - leaving out the art is a missed opportunity for community improvement, particularly since it's only 1.7% of the cost of the project and may take the place of other materials that would be required anyway as in the case of terrazzo. I'm okay with the public art policy being ditched for this project. If nothing else, it would send a signal (albeit a hollow one) that the commission cares about spending our tax dollars wisely. If they do proceed with public art, it should be of the type that employs many craftsmen rather than one asshole from New York that wants to cast a concrete hockey puck and collect his check.
