South Florida Activists Choose Egypt Over Super Bowl

While millions of Americans get ready to watch the biggest sporting event of the year, today's match up between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, more than a hundred South Floridians will be rallying outside the Federal building in Fort Lauderdale, showing their support for the revolutionaries in Egypt.

For days, activists across South Florida have been organizing themselves through mass emails, text messages, and Facebook groups meant to inspire solidarity with the Egyptians dedicated to overthrowing Hosni Mubarak.

Activists are making signs that say things like: "Make your Condemnation Known" and "Billion Blood on Taxpayer Hands." Their objective, aside from the show of solidarity, is to convince the U.S. government to stop sending money and weapons (some of those pleasant Made in the USA teargas canisters, for example, or the threatening F-16s flying overhead) to Egyptian leaders.

There may not be a region of the U.S. more supportive of Israel than South Florida, and as American politicians know very well, an uncertain future for Egypt means an uncertain future for Israel. But despite that, more than 100 South Floridians have already committed to attending the Fort Lauderdale rally through one Facebook group alone. There are sure to be camera crews and plenty of local television coverage. Similar demonstrations are being organized in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

The rally is scheduled for today, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., on the corner across from Stranahan Park, in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a spot often occupied by Tea Partiers and Pro-Israel groups.
