Medical Examiner Joshua Perper's Son Arrested in Pill Mill Raid

The son of Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper was arrested this morning in a law enforcement raid of pain pill mills in South Florida.

Zvi "Harry" Perper was arrested at 10 a.m. of Delray Pain Management, which he owns with another man, Kenneth Murry.

questioned the medical examiner about his son's trade back in May. Here's what Joshua Perper said while defending his son's occupation: "If a physician is giving pain pills for legitimate reasons, there's nothing wrong with it -- it's part of the practice of medicine. When a physician is giving it out indiscriminately, it's a violation of law. [Harry] assured me that he is operating in the proper practice of medicine, and I have no reason not to believe him. As long as he is doing this ethically and in the best interest of the patient, there is nothing wrong with it."

Apparently a task force of DEA agents, deputies with the Broward and Palm Beach sheriff's offices, and several police departments didn't buy it. Harry Perper prescribed 387,000 oxycodone tablets in the first half of 2010, making him the 22nd-most prolific prescriber of the drug in the U.S. for that period, the Herald reported.

"I don't know where else you can go for a higher profit margin than that," Trouville said.

 More inside.

The task force is shutting down dozens of pain clinics from Miami to Palm Beach and making numerous arrests. From the Sun-Sentinel:

[D]uring a Delray Beach raid that began about 10 a.m., agents arrested Dr. Zvi Perper, the son of Broward Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper. He is the listed owner of Delray Pain Management, 201 N. Swinton Ave. though the facility is run by manager Kenneth Murry, who opened it in early 2009.

Perper was led out of the clinic in handcuffs and beige medical scrubs and escorted to a Delray Beach police car. Questions shouted from a phalanx of reporters included one asking Perper if he thought this day would ever come.

"No," he said, refusing to say anything further.

While Joshua Perper defended his son's work, he was vocal about the dangers of the pill mills. In June 2009, he was in the Miami Herald talking about the dangers of doctor shopping, a practice in which people go to numerous clinics to stockpile dangerous and highly addictive pills like oxycodone, Xanax, and Valium. "It's almost impossible to monitor different people shopping doctors,'' Perper told the newspaper at the time. "A person can get hundreds or thousands of pills.''

He went on to talk about the explosion in oxycodone-related deaths, which ballooned to 171 in Broward County in 2008, more than double the figure from 2005. He also complained in the Sun-Sentinel about the increase in pain pill deaths.

Neither of those articles mentioned his son's involvement in the pain pill business.

Here's a photograph of the line outside the pain clinic raided above that was shot by Cal Deal this past April.

This is such a dangerous practice.  Physicians should be required to have extended training in medical school regarding narcotics.  I was addicted to hydrocodone for over a decade.  The sad thing is, my husband is a physician and was the guy prescribing them and bringing them home to me.  If I hadn't gotten off of them I surly would be dead by now.  It changed who I was as a person and stripped me of my soul.  I've been clean of all narcotics for over 3 years now.  I handed over my selfish will and God somehow helped save me from a living living hell I would not wish upon anyone.  God help those suffering out there.  Shame on physicians for this practice, they have no idea what they can do to another human being.  Didn't they take a Hippocratic oath to protect, help, and heal?  Medical schools you need to take heed and take control of this and teach new med students about the potential dire outcomes of needless prescribing.   Pain medicine has it's place, but only for PAIN.

Xanax Addiction
Xanax Addiction

Addicts are likely to need extensive psychological therapy in order to complete rehab from their dependence. There is no easy solution to Xanax addiction, but with the right help and continued support users can live a completely normal life again.

Hi New Times,

If you're so appalled by the pill mills why do you devote so many pages to advertising them prominently?

The DOCTORS are the gateway to this synthetic heroin epidemic-PERIOD. Law enforcement should not have to be in the position to police the DOCTORS. Addicts cannot have access to these potent medications, at a level not seen before, that has become the new "crack" without a DOCTOR writing the Rx........

I have heard there is an American Airlines direct flight from Kentucky to FLL (Fort Lauderdale) that is commonly refered to as "The Oxycontin Express".

They didn't show low life Adler, but certainly got to tarnish his name. All of the other corrupt lawyers involved feel like they dodged a bullet on this show. That's shameful. And so much was missing...you'd think that the complicity with the sheriff's office, fort lauderdale police department, the habad, wicca wife, thieving jewish church officials like szfranski, the fact that three people are dead so far in this story, the law enforcement officers on his payroll, the fact that he was made ethics chair of the JQC. Not to mention the written threat to Pulp and Rothstein's JEWISH AVENGER crazytalk. Someone has to write a book. Pulp?? Write the book as only you can.

David Boden HAS to be laughing his fat ass off. He got a TOTAL pass in this story even though, in reality, he was right in the middle of it. Good for you Fat Boy! As for Kim, she's just another South Florida wanna be that got caught up in her own game.

quit bitching it was fine and anyone that saw it know hes the only one got an interview and hunted him down!

The last thing I need is to be blown up like a blowfish. The problem wasn't a lack of me -- it was lack of a single "big get" interview. DF3 says lawyers told the story, which is true. The problem was none of them were named Rosenfeldt, Adler, Boden, etc. It was Scherer, Sonn, and Nurik. Only Nurik knew him well but all he's doing is spinning like a top. Even catching up to one of the real players and letting them say "no comment" on camera would have brought some life to it. And I agree -- way too little Kimmie. It's like they shied away from the things that make great TV, which makes no sense.

I can't believe how everyone interviewed on "American Greed" was puffed up like a blowfish, except the Pulp. "And this is Scott's office!" Spare me. Way too much Nurik, not enough Kimmmmmmmeeeeeeee or Meathooks.

It does shock me how all of these idiots gave SR money. Sonn saying everyone knew yada yada yada bull shit. Nobody but Pulp challenged SR prior to the implosion of Ponzi. Pulp, it is funny that SR is living in your house right now. Well at least you're paying for him to live there.

Did anyone see Tom Jones singing on the CNBC Rothstein special? I especially loved that black velour blazer and the guttural New Yawk accent.

Oh my Gawd! Seriously, outside of a Porno, has anyone ever witnessed a bigger penis?

Can you imagine retaining that clown, or better yet, giving him your money?

Nurik was a dick. Had to take a shot at our beloved pulp.

Pulp

All right, Nurik officially has way too much air time on this American Greed show. He even was allowed to get in a dig at me! And then Jeffrey Sonn yapping. Too many lawyers, basically, but it is CNBC. It's like a by-rote trudge through the story, dry as bread crumbs. I may be too close to it tho -- maybe the guy in Dubuque will find it wildly entertaining.

I went into a CVS pharmacy in broward co. to have a medication (adhd) filled for my son. This med. is concidered a controlled substance in Indiana. You must show ID and can't refill before a certain date.I went into a Target and a 6 pack of beer was on my shopping list, Guess what---I had to show my ID. I just turned 51.Only the people that Floridians elect can change some some of the bad stuff that is taking place with the Florida Drug Trade. Vote wisely and keep going after the bad guys! I LOVE FT. LAUDERDALE! Got to go! Scotty R.show starting.

This really is unbelievable! You have to wonder if the drug manufacturers or distributors aren't just as guilty because of course they knew what was going on with all the tremendous volume of business. Don't they have any responsibility? This has been going on for years! The reckless disregard! It's all about the MONEY!

A convicted heroin dealer ran seven pain clinics here. From Herald story:

Also arrested Wednesday: Vincent Colangelo, 42, a convicted heroin dealer from Davie who ran a network of seven pain clinics in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, luring would-be patients with ads posted on some 1,600 Internet domain names. According to a federal indictment, Colangelo’s clinics distributed more than 660,000 oxycodone pills in a two-year period, helping Colangelo and his partners reap more than $22 million. Investigators believe the scheme brought in $150,000 a day. “I don’t know where else you can go for a higher profit margin than that,” Trouville said.

What else could the Medical Examiner say about his son? This must be a major shame for him. The whole Perper family's ethics are in question. Remember he had to change Mrs. Novacks cause of death and then there was something about his daughter. If the pain clinics were run legitimately there is a need, but the abuse is overwhelming. It's so easy to get the drugs here that people come in from out of state and then resell it. Not to mention so many deaths.Tonights the night 10PM CNBC-American Greed-Scott Rothstein

Pulp that is how CNBC operates. The show was more of a vanilla documentary than a hard hitting piece of journalism.

This was not 20/20, 60 minutes, or Nightline.

These were friendly interviews done of friendly subjects (the lawyers who provided all of the videos, emails, and pictures).

Spiro Agnew

I agree. The producers of this episode should be fired for airing this yawn. Where was Roger Stone, Adderley getting drunk at Bova Prime, the off duty cops guarding Scott, the Republican Party sucking Scott's shlong, the real deal about the feeders, Levin, the bank oficers, Spinosa, Adler, etc., etc. All it did was reinforce to the rest of the country what they already think; that we are a bunch of incompetent, tanned clowns down here.

Virgil Starkwell

While the Pulp was clearly the first journalist to write about SR, what Sonn stated was 100% true. Many in the local community knew he was dirty long before anything was written.

I can recall the first time I read the "Jewish Avenger" article that the Pulp wrote, and thinking, "finally, someone is on his trail".

It was the talk of the town for quite some time, in many circles.

I think they told the story, They used the lawyers (involved with SR) to tell the story. They have all of the shiny stuff that makes good TV. The videos, pictures, emails, etc. I think you're being a little sensitive.

Meanwhile, Nurik is full of shit because you came out very early on and wrote that his "client" was likely cooperating with the Feds. He left the impression that you were duped by that scene at Capital Grille, which is complete bullshit.

Sour grapes from Nurik because you exposed him and his clown like behavior during the entire process.

That special gets a D- for not featuring the guy who broke that story well before anyone else.

It was good. I enjoyed seeing Ft. Lauderdale, but as we all know they only scratched the surface. Nurick is a Asshole Bob, you're the only one who photographed Rothstein at Capital Grille so it was a scoop. All the time Nurick was lying through his teeth(pardon the pun) about Rothstein's cooperation with the Feds.

I only wish I could get duped like that every blogging day of my life. And of course I knew what was going on. But that's a sideshow. I wanted the program to be great, but competent is about as good a word as I can use to describe it. No tension, no suspense, no story arc. The additional footage from the American Pie songfest was maybe the best thing in it. Here's hoping that the Discovery Channel finds a way to bring the thing to life. I'll find out when it's going to be air and report it.
