Notorious Everglades Hotel Plan May Be Shot Down by Gun Range

This photo shows Markham gun range (figure one) and its proximity to the Everglades Corporate site.

The Everglades Corporate Park project on the edge of the Everglades in Sunrise might soon be killed as the literal victim of nearby gunplay.

Here we see the path of a richochet shot off sand flying over gun range berm
After great controversy over the massive hotel and office space development, which would consist of a hotel and office space and is planned to be built in a nature area west of the Sawgrass Expressway, the city commissioned a forensics firm to study whether there was potential danger by bullets flying from the nearby shooting range at Markham Park.

The firm hired for the job, Forensic Science Consultants out of New Mexico, issued a report this week that contains very bad news for the developers.

Consultant Michael Haag found that errant shots -- fired either over the berm or ricocheting over it after striking the ground -- could strike (and in the first case kill) an unlucky person at the proposed hotel site.

"As a scientist, a Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor, and life-long shooter, I would not feel comfortable being downrange, or allowing others to

be downrange at the hotel site," wrote consultant Michael Haag. "In summary, it is my professional opinion that it is: 1) entirely possible to deliver direct fire with common rifle and handgun caliber bullets to the proposed hotel area with potentially lethal velocity, 2) possible to inadvertently ricochet a bullet from the range area and deliver a projectile to the proposed hotel area."

It sounds like a future episode of 1000 Ways to Die, and it could kill the project, which is proposed by a development firm out of Louisville, Kentucky, and has been shepherded by big-money developer's lobbyist Dennis Mele of Ruden McClosky. The development took a big political hit when former Sunrise Mayor Roger Wishner, a proponent of the project after Mele raised his campaign several thousand dollars, was defeated at the polls by Michael Ryan.

Ryan has voiced opposition to the project, which was first objected to by Sunrise Commissioner Sheila Alu. She has said the site would mar the Everglades and should never be built. It was Alu who proposed the gun range study.

New hearings regarding the site are expected to be held soon at Sunrise City Hall.

--  The Sun-Sentinel reports that former Davie Vice Mayor Susan Starkey whacked a man in the stomach earlier this month with her metal cane during an argument outside her home. Seems a neighbor had people over who were mourning the death that day of a relative. Seems Starkey's 21-year-old daughter, Jennifer, became outraged at the noise coming from the house after midnight and began cursing at them. Basheer Mustafa, 24, said he went to her home in hopes of calming the daughter down when she "grabbed his neck and punched him in the jaw." He said that to defend himself, he grabbed her hair and threw her to the ground. That's when Starkey wielded the cane she carries after knee surgery like a baseball bat and struck Mustafa in the stomach with it. Mustafa says Vice Mayor Starkey was defending her daughter and bears no blame in the scuffle. Police were called to the scene, and reports list both Mustafa and Jennifer Starkey as potential misdemeanor battery victims. No arrests have resulted to date, and the matter is still under investigation.

-- Broward Schools Superintendent Jim Notter and board member Jennifer Gottlieb continue to spin (or in Gottlieb's case outright lie) to the media about the Beachside Boondoggle. When are these festering sores on the body politic going to go away?

Some of the comments on this article only confirm why America is rapidly falling behind the rest of the world in education. Simple (again the word is SIMPLE) vector physics easily confirm the forensics contained in the report. DF3's entertaining, although insultingly inaccurate understanding of physics (nor ballistics) does not effectively rebut the findings.

Good Morning and Happy Sunday All!@ Kenny -They're not going to close Markham Park. The public would be outraged to have one of the best parks in Florida taken down. What I'm afraid of is that they'll move the gun range making way for that needless Hotel/Office complex to be built in an area of the Everglades never intended for commercial use. Sad to say what we've learned is the public's say and what they want means nothing even after a vote.Let's hope Alu and the others do the right thing.

Damn, when I saw the title of the article included , "Everglades Hotel", I was hoping it was about that racist Palm Beach 'Everglades Club" in Palm Beach. No such luck that place was the one to go in the dumper.

City of Sunrise - I thought "gunslinging" only happened in Davie?

Speaking of Davie and "Current" Vice Mayor Starkey (Pulp, the Davie Council selects their Vice Mayor the 2nd Council meeting in March, so Mrs. Starkey is still "Current" Vice Mayor.)-Susan Starkey has recently divorced her 3rd husband, Gerard (Gerry) Starkey.

Gerry Starkey is more infamously known for his email scandal a number of years ago, using fictitious email accounts/names to send very nasty emails about certain residents and Council during the "Sheridan House" rezoning/special permit issue.

Current public record indicates Mrs. Starkey's home in Long Lake Ranches lcoated in Davie, is in "Foreclosure proceedings".

Finally, I thought "canings" only take place as punishment in "Singapore". Not in Davie, FL by the Vice Mayor of the town.

The Markham Park firing range is a great asset to the community. Every weekend thousands of responsible citizens go there to safely practice their skills, socialize and compete. It is also used by law enforcement for practice.

But this whole safety issue is suspicious. Dirt is cheap. Can't they just make the berm higher by dumping dirt on it, and build a small mountain-like back wall? Surely an economical solution can be found. I fear these developers are angling towards getting the range shut down.

I say shut these developers down, leave the Everglades to the gators already!

I agree with almost everything you said except " I fear these developers are angling towards getting the range shut down."

WHAT?

nobody is trying to shot down the park or the gun range. nothing wrong with building on this land, just not as close to the property line as the developer wants. this isn't the everglades. take a look at the map. the entire town of weston, half of pembroke pines and miramar are west of this point. yet all of a sudden one hotel and 2 office buildings will destroy the everglades, poison the drinking water and on and on? give me a break.

That had crossed my mind, too -- that the developers wanted to shut the range down. Yet the city not only ordered the forensic survey but chose a firm whose up-front travel expenses might have ruled it out on fiscal grounds. Apparently the expert found the result he'd been given to understand he should look for, took the money, and ran back to New Mexico, where his regular client base isn't likely to learn of his bizarre finding.

Here in Broward, however, DF3's neat invalidation of the survey conclusion is likely to be the first of many. Also, the matter of stray gunfire/ricochets was discussed at length last year, and as I remember it, people were mainly worried about kids who were guests at the hotel wandering into the line of fire. Again as I recall, it was also noted that the developer, not the city, would be liable in the event of any injuries or deaths. So why did the city order the tests at all?

More to the point, would the city set up a test that the developers could shoot down if so inclined? Is it possible that the city is looking to facilitate an arrangement whereby the developers could profit greatly from closing down the range? Sure, the city could persuade the county to beef up the berm and put a really huge wall behind it. But all the commissioners would get would be the gratitude of Markham Park's thousands of patrons and an assortment of tree-huggers, environmentalists, whatever. On the other hand, being credited with opening the door to the developer's contemplated environmental destruction might be rewarded more tangibly.

Here's one for you, jad: Is there any way for a private business entity to acquire a portion of a county park, or even the whole park? It may be that someone's been thinking way ahead. Do we really want all those (as yet nonexisting) jobs at such a cost to the Everglades and to the people who enjoy Markham Park as it is?

Apparently someone isn't coming up with enough cash to get the test to pass.

I agree. Very well said. Markham Park is a wonderful park and with so many different ammenities including the firing range. It wouls be a shame to close it down. This Hotel/Office Complex, in this area of the Everglades that was intended to be protected, is unnecessary. If one drives around the Weston and Sunrise area you see office parks and buildings empty and in need of tenents. The Starkey's daugter was very wrong in her cursing at the neighbors. The right thing to do would have been to call the police(Her father is a police officer..unbelievable) Then to attack the neighbors cousin when he cameover to explain the reason. She appears to be a very cultured young lady. The daughter is the one who should be charged!

My .02, This picture (of the range) is a lot like the Elian Gonzalez when the Border Patrol Agents seized him. The Miami family cried about how the big bad SWAT guy had a big gun and was going to shoot them. But the picture clearly showed the the safety was on and his finger outside the trigger guard.

Look again at the picture and where the "test" and measurements were done. The mapping location was done from the furthest east point of the "range" if you can call it that. The area they measured from is off limits to firearms. The nearest firing line is to the west and is "Shotgun" only meaning no rifled barreled weapons. So no 45, no 223, no barret 50's.

In the photo, the area to the far right (a small green box) is the BSO range, to the immidiate left is the "public" pistol and rifle range, to the right of the are the skeet and trap stations... then to the right of that is where they conduted the test in an empty non shooting area. Interestingly that is the only area that is in the quasi-firing line because it is not a straight shot either. Then look at where they measured to, the corner of the property.

Then ther's the photo of the "test" does that look like a gun range? no its a clearing that is dedicated as part of the "safety zone" around the range.

The fix is in on this study and the pictures prove it.

Do the study correctly. What are the dangers of shotguns from the shotgun range, and rifles and pistols from the rifle and pistol range.

I dont want to see any building on that land. I also dont want to see bogus studies to prevent it.

You can't do evil in order to do good.

Speaking of bogus pictures, whatever happened to that BS pic of the SB candidate and her bogus hand picture?

I have some questions about the Starkey incident.

1) Is Mr. Mustafa a muslim, and if so, how are Muslims perceived in the Starkey residence? Are they viewed through the typical rightwing colored lens, a caricature like perception where all Muslims are dehumanized? (Is Fox News the channel that is most often on in that household?)

2) If in fact Muslims are perceived in a negative light in that home, did this perception affect their daughter's actions at the time? You know, the appropriate thing to do would have been to call Davie P.D. and make a noise complaint.

I don't know the answer to the above questions, and forgive me for speculating without further evidence, but if the answer is yes to each, then I would opine that this "may" be an example of passing intolerance and ignorance on to our children.

When it comes to parenting, is there a greater offense?

cindermaggi

YES THERE ARE MANY MORE WORSE OFFENSES .......not teaching children the right thing as you!

I read your post and did a 5 minute Google Search and learned the following.

Starkey is a Republican and some members of the Republican Party have called her anti-semetic because she didn't immediately have a litter sign sponsored by CAIR (Council for American Islamic Relations) removed.

Seems to me she's not Anti-Muslim

DF3:

You forgot to read the comments that followed that article. I understand this is hearsay, but since you are the one that cited that article, they are worth mentioning in the context of this story.__________________________________________________________________Annonymous writes:

" I personally know Susan Starkey she does not care about anybody but herself. She is after money and fame she cares nothing about the people. She and her husband Jerry Starkey refer to blacks and Hispanics as niggers and spics. Her husband Jerry Starkey a Miami detective is a undercover racist. I personally heard Susan Starkey and her husband make derogatory statements about Jews."

And then there is this comment in support:

"I'm appalled that this group is painting Susan Starkey as an anti-semite. She is one of the most fair-minded, caring people I know".

______________________________________________________

Sounds like conflicting views, but I do applaud her for standing up to that f'ing Kaufman creep and his extreme fascist/zionist views. Most of that nonsense about CAIR is propaganda disseminated by the same fascists that have been pushing our President to release Jonathan Pollard from prison. (The spy who has caused incalcuable damage to America)

That aside, you have found nothing to answer any of the above-referenced questions that I have. Despite the fact that I did make it clear that they were just questions, this is not the first time you have exhibited reading comprehension problems.

I concur with Virgil. Overly so, if Ruden McClosky is willing to move their offices to the top floor on the south side of the office building they are no-doubt planning to build there along with the hotel, I say its worth the risk. Now is the time to trust in Karma.

Virgil Starkwell

Instead of providing robes to their guests, hotel management will be providing bullet proof vests. As long as those in the range are courteous enough to yell "FORE", I see nothing wrong with this project.

Great! There is absolutely no need for this Hotel/Office Complex to be built in this location!
