Super Bowl Tax Is Anti-American

Wild Art: Rick Scott's inauguration yesterday (Lisa Macci/Facebook)

-- After the post on Sheriff Al Lamberti's taking of liberties with official Super Bowl credentials to get his son into the game, the South Florida Times has come out with a report on a "secret" Super Bowl detail that involved more deputies who provided security for the big game -- and were paid thousands in overtime (1.5x pay) on top of it while taking vacation days from their jobs at BSO. UPDATE: One source tells me that one deputy, a girlfriend of one of Lamberti's favorite officers, was put on the detail to guard the wife of Peyton Manning. My sources say that sheriff's brass is scrambling to find leaks and get to the bottom of the entire Super Bowl fiasco.

Furthering the Super Bowl theme, now the Sentinel reports that the Dolphins are trying to get a share of Broward County tourist tax money to help it renovate its stadium (i.e., give it a roof) so that the NFL will choose it for more Super Bowl games in the future.

Parkland Mayor Mike Udine, who is rumored to be headed for a run for County Commission in 2012, also railed against the idea. "It's insanity," he said. "It's almost asinine for a government to give money to a private enterprise at this time of cutbacks. And there is no way that the NFL is not going to play Super Bowls in South Florida. South Florida has everything the NFL wants. They'll be back."

Fortunately Broward Mayor Sue Gunzburger seems very skeptical of the idea as well (though Nikki Grossman is cheerleading for it). A reader sent me an email a dentist in Plantation sent to Mayor Gunzburger about the idea. Read it inside.

The letter:

Hello Mayor Gunzburger,

I am writing this letter to you to ask you for your help to get the county to pay for the renovation of my dental practice. I will use the same argument that the Dolphins are using for their needs of public financing. I generate sales taxes, property taxes and tourism taxes through my pediatric dental practice albeit not at the scale that the Dolphins representatives are detailing. We serve the community in a much more important role than some professional sports stadium will ever! We provide necessary basic health care to thousands of Palm Beach, Broward, Miami Dade and Caribbean children. I will ask the Mayors of those counties and countries as well for a couple of hundred thousand dollars. Its time that billionaire owners of sports franchises start acting like the rest of us professional business owners who do not receive aid from any government entity and that is to pass those costs on to the ticket holders, after all they are the ones benefiting the most. It amazes me that these billionaires will cry "socialism" only when the socialism doesn't help them, just ask our long time Ft Lauderdale buddy Autonation CEO Mr. Michael Jackson when the government bailed out GM and Chrysler, that was ok, but mandating Health care through Obamacare (of which I dont agree with either, but the argument is convienient) that was heresy and SOCIALISM and that is verbatim from Mr. Jackson!!! My advice to you Mrs Mayor is I would tell Mr Ross to go into his own pocket...cause that is what you are going to tell me!!!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jason Hirsch

Nobody is going to give Ross dime one -- no one who is not hell bent on political suicide, that is -- so in the end this is a non-story.

The real "tax" story today is Gov. Rick Snake's volte face on gambling. It very much looks like the idea of Vegas-style destination casinos in Miami Beach and elsewhere will indeed come to pass, and within five years. However, State Senator Dennis Jones, the Senate Regulated Industries Committee chairman, has indicated that the tax rates on the casinos would fall from the 35% imposed on parimutels to 8-10%.

That is a lot of potential money to remove from state budget coffers. And it's not as if the gambling industry would balk if the rate stayed at 35%.

I have long been in favor of bringing this kind of gambling to help cure various tax-related ills, but this drop in the tax rate has an overpowering and unpleasant aroma.

Bobby my friend unlike Virgie who admitted when he was wrong I do recall you saying it was time for Mr Riley (not Stacy Ritter) to come back and lead these rather LARGE spoiled egos (Lebron Wade and Bosh) .....young...Mr.Spoelstra unified and humbleised the trio and that is a great accomplishment itself!!!.........Myself not having to much faith in "coaches" actually leading a Team to victory...The Greatest hockey coach (Captain) ever was "Captain "Mark Messier who lead the Edmonton Oilers to five Stanley Cups along with the great Gretzky .....But Mark did something that the great one never could, do in Los Angeles (Kings) and that was to turn the New York Rangers into Stanley Cup Champions 1994 making Mark Messier the only "athlete "ever to captain two Championship teams.........GO HEAT

Okay I am back to South Florida for another 3 weeks. Had to go to out of Florida. Superior court one day and a local out of state City Hall on business. As I walked up the grandiose stairs entering the supreme court house and in awe at the old laced elevators, I kept thinking about Broward needing a New Courthouse. I then understood the Problem in Broward is Broward Didn't take care of or maintain what they had. Broward doesn't take care of Public schools here. The city hall I visited was built in 1935. The clerk working confirmed the buiding was a grade school back in the day and still had original chalk boards. The clerk ,a 50 some year old woman said she attended grade school there in 3rd and 4th grade. The building had history and was very well maintained. Beautiful. Broward county should be ashamed the way they build out new and discard the old. All on taxpayers dime and the elite few that fill their pockets in the new building-construction-loan-build-out Frenzy. )

Love the football stories Pulp. Lamberti needs to resign. Junior attending the BSO0000 Security detail was a lie and fraud. That is why Lamberti was close to Rothstein... Siamese Twins or shall we say Chang and Eng twins.

It is preposterous to argue that the Dolphins need a dome to attract more Super Bowls. Although the Colts/Bears SuperBowl was a washout, that was an aberration. How often does it rain in early February in South Florida? (Check the Farmers Almanac)

In fact, South Florida historically has some of the best weather in the entire country during the month of February. There is no doubt whatsoever that the NFL wants an outdoor venue for a Super Bowl, and this stadium is clearly one of the few in the league where the weather is acceptable for an outdoor game in February.

I call bullshit on Ross. I think this has more to do with September through December, when the stadium can get a little hot to watch a game. This is just another example of the creeping fascism that continues to permeate our society. While the elite continue to ask the middle class and poor to accept austerity measures, they shamelessly hold their greedy paws out and ask us to finance their latest business idea.

Dace County was fleeced by Jeffrey Loria and his organization who misrepresented the true financial condition of the Marlins. There is absolutely no reason to believe anything that is ever uttered by these corporate millionaires and billionaires. They are giant leeches who suck the blood from the veins of the community.

The tickets are overpriced, the parking fees outrageous and the overpriced food is borderline poison. These greedy pigs have no shame and the only way to truly send a message to them is to stop going to the games. I am a huge sports fan, but I would never purchase season tickets to visit that overrated stadium.

And after this season, I am less likely to purchase single game tickets until I see a material in the product. That includes that horrific team and the aforementioned deficiencies that exist in that stadium.

I say if other private corporations and businesses(Hotels, Restaurants etc.) want to contribute that's fine with me. The millionaire owners of Sports Teams should no be gifted with our public tax dollars for their peronally owned stadiums. South Florida has the best weather for the Super Bowl and they'll still want to play here.

@Pulp - Maybe you have the answers to your earlier posts. It may be that Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman has been out being lobbied and wined and dined by the football folks.

Also, the baseball whoe thied the same thing about ten years ago. They wanted to put a tax on cruise ticket to pay for a new stadium. Talk about taxation without representation. Tax the cruise passenger for something they will never gain benefit. Also, I dont recall a cruise line or airline that service this area ever approaching any governmental agency for money to build a ship or plane. Joe Robbie Stadium was provately built and owned, no public dollars should ever be used for its support unless Ross and H Wayne want to give a relative amount of equity to the people. The problem with these billionaires is that just because they think they can gain their fortune in video sales, garbage, real estate or cheap art, they think they can be successful in the sport industry. Clearly Ross has not been successful in his choices with the Dolphins or nor has Jeffrey Loria with the Marlins. It takes more than money to be a successful sports franchise owner, you have to be a fan first.

I love the way politicians are now rushing to condemn the Dolphins. This statement just came to the Pulp from Commissioner Chip LaMarca:

"This action by the Miami Dolphins organization is absolutely shameful. This organization has quite a nerve asking for Broward County dollars for a building that isn't even located within our borders at this time of economic uncertainty and at a time when we don't have enough revenue to operate county government effectively.

"We have numerous projects that deserve priority in our own county, such as a convention center hotel and other projects that will enhance our community and create jobs for our citizens.

"We saw what happens when governments take the bait from organizations like these. This is simply an insult to taxpayers and the citizens of Broward County. If this was a time of economic prosperity and our coffers were full, I would consider it. But to come to us in the middle of a massive recession and ask to commit anundisclosed number of county dollars to this project is absolutely abhorrent. I would be a horrible steward of our tax dollars if I supported any such measure.

"Perhaps the organization should focus more on winning more than one game at home during the season instead of trying to pilfer tax dollars from our local government."

OMG - paid thousands in overtime!! while taking vacation days from their jobs at BSO!!!! HOLY HELL!

Dr. Jason Hirsch I love your letter! Great job! Way to put it into perspective!

As for Nikki Grossman figures she'd be behind it right??? How did she get her job anyway?? JOKE.

I remember when the Marlins won the world series and they had the players arrive by boat in the then thriving Las Olas Riverfront EVERYONE there was making fun of her lack of etiquette as an emcee! She's yelling and screaming while introducing the players as if she were in heat! Paul & Young Ron were so caught off guard by her unprofessional tone! For a short second I felt embarrassed for her!! Factor in her salary & I wouldn’t feel sorry for her at all!

Las Vegas is very vulnerable with their housing, economic and last but certainly not least water issues. It might make sense to expand gambling in Florida and it will surely help Guvner Spock kick start his goal of 700,000 new jobs, no matter how temporary or menial they might be.

And who are all these people that are going to flood the state with pockets full of cash that can just piss it away at a casino?

Certainly not anybody I know.

GhostOfMcLovin

not that I agree with the logic, but then-State Senator Steve Gellar whined incessantly that the pari-mutuals are over-taxed, and actually produce less revenue for the state than a lower tax (the idea being that Mardi Gras, The Isle, Gulfstream and Dania Jai-Alai would turn the taxes generated but not passed to the state into improvements to their facilities, better able to compete with the Seminoles). I don't necessarily buy it, I think that gambling revenues at pari-mutuals will always stay flat, what's the draw? A horse or dog running around a track? The Seminoles are successful because they recognized right away they needed more to draw people than a couple hundred slot machines. Restaurants, shops, bars, lounges, a hotel and entertainment venues. The pari-mutuals will never be able to compete with that. The truth is, if we were going to allow gambling in Broward, it should have been at a destination that people would actually go to, like Ft Lauderdale beach hotels, Sawgrass Mills or the downtown. Nobody is in a hurry to go to a barn shaped "casino" in a ghetto at Pembroke Road and Dixie Hwy. PS I do NOT begrudge the Seminoles for their successes, they should be able to do anything they want on their reservation. It isn't an argument of the indians against the pari-mutuals, to me they're independently exclusive of each other. PS I'm a pro-gambling Republican.

Never been so happy to be so wrong about the Heat. Didn't think they could compete without a true center and point guard. Biggest difference is their defense.

Still think they are in trouble against Boston. Wade may have to defend Rondo the entire game, which may hurt his offense.

Maintenance of staid, old well-built buildings and historic structures is truly an issue. Witness (on the historic side) what the Ft. L wants to do witht he Coca Cola building. History means nothing. No appreciation. No respect.

The other side is the quality of structures, especially in more recent years - say, the last 30-40 years. Developers are keep on getting the work, securing the contracts - but that is certainly no guarantee of quality. As we have been reading in these blogs, those in the public trust and meant to oversee the work, manage time and expenses, are but pawns. (We won't even get into issues of compatibility with surrounding community, public space, light/air or - heaven forfend - aesthetics!)

I always said the Heat were going to win a huge numbers of games. In fact, I made a small wager at the beginning of the year they would win 70. Stacy Ritter could coach this team to the conference finals, maybe all the way. My view of Spoelstra hasn't changed. He's an extension of Riley, more a corporate climber, a yes man, than a real coach. If you think he commands great respect among the players you're on another planet. They can win a championship with him, but he's not a great coach, not close.

I couldn't agree more. Ross has turned the Dolphins into a cocktail party punchline. His "upgraded stadium experience" including that ridiculous orange carpet (the Geico Caveman? Really?) Assinine Marc Anthony and J-Lo songs being pumped through the stadium every 10 minutes and that god-awful "fins" buffet song after scores is an embarrassment. Club LIV? Yeah I want to spend a cound hundred in a club in a stadium after sweating for 3 and a half hours in the florida sun (or rain). SCREW ROSS, I'll never attend a game there as long as he owns it. Does anybody think this crap would fly in a real footbal city like Green Bay, Chicago, Pittsburgh or Cleveland? Pathetic
