Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Seeing Gabby's Eyes Open Was "the Most Incredible Experience I Have Ever Had"

Giffords, Gillibrand, and Wasserman Schultz.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a close friend of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords', was in the Tucson hospital room last night when the congresswoman opened her eyes for the first time after being shot in the head during Saturday's mass shooting.

Wasserman Schultz, a Democratic congresswoman representing Broward County, was in the room with U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Nancy Pelosi, and members of Giffords' family when it happened. President Barack Obama announced the news that Giffords had opened her eyes during his memorial speech last night, saying he had just left the hospital room himself when it happened.

Wasserman Schultz said Giffords began to try to open her eyes as she was talking to her about New Hampshire, where the two women had vacationed together at Wasserman Schultz's home there. "I told her, 'C'mon you have to get better as soon as possible because I expect you up in New Hampshire this summer,' and just as I said that, that's when she suddenly [began] struggling to open her eyes," Wasserman Schultz said in a CNN interview last night. "First just a little bit. The doctors couldn't believe it... She went from opening her eyes really just in slits to opening them almost fully."

Giffords' husband, Mark, began talking to her, asking her to touch his wedding ring and give the thumbs-up if she could see them. Giffords, who had a bandage over one eye, responded by lifting her entire arm.

"She looked not anything like you would imagine someone with a gunshot wound to the head would look," Wasserman Schultz told reporters later. "She looked angelic, I have to tell you. It was stunning. I mean, she -- the strength that she has is -- we were already aware of, but it clearly -- I mean, it just resonates all the way through her."

Giffords' family invited Wasserman Schultz to come to Tucson with Obama on Air Force One. Here's a transcript of the interviews with Wasserman Schultz and Giffords on Air Force One after the event. Inside, hear Wasserman Schultz describe the event and a remembrance of a chilling event during Wasserman Schultz's own campaign involving a wayward Tea Party candidate.

UPDATED: Goldilocks reminded us below of one of the most ill-conceived campaign stunts in Broward history. When Tea Party candidate Robert Lowry ran against Wasserman Schultz, he went to the firing range with members of the Southeast Broward Republican Club and put the congresswoman's initials, DWS, on a human-shaped target. Lowry later called it a mistake. Here's a vid made from the day the GOP hit Pembroke Gun and Range:

Pulpsters; This is what most of you don't understand so I will lay out for you the socialist liberal agenda. The end result will be to have a Venezuela style country with a socialist cummunist underpinning. Step 1; Destroy the middle class. This is done by devaluating the Dollars. Create hyperinflation to destroy the middle class buy desrtoying their purchasing power. Taking away their wealth; home ownership and retirement plans.2. Disarm the people. Use any excuse like the congresswomans case to call for control. So the politicians remain untouchable.3. Control the media. Silence talk radio. Belittle and smear fox TV and any other non agenda news including the regulation of the internet.4. Creat czar posts under socialist influences and use the executive order for short term gains.5 Overrun the borders with criminals and illegal aliens. Flood the system. Overwhelm the system.6. Have progarms that seem like very altruistic and noble goals like no child left behind and healthcare. That furthers the class warfare and destroys self reliance.7. Continue to demonize and tax the wealthy until there are no wealthy.8. Create crisises whenever possible.9 Create a police force that doesn't respect civil liberties and apparently doesn't answer to anyone(TSA).Do this in increments so that the populace becomes accustomed to pat downs and illegal searches and seizures.10. Take God out of the equation. So That the people understand that whatever rights they have are granted and withdrawn by the government and not inalienable rights given to us directly from our creator.

But you say why do this. Well why did Hugo Chavez do it? Ask yourself that question. This all can be done in the name of democracy as it was done in venezuela. We need to remind ourselves that this country is a republic in which all the citizens are guaranteed equal protection. The people in power are the ones that are the

The ramblings of just another confused teabat.

1) The process you describe has been ongoing now for decades and is attributed to corporatism, not socialism. When Bush and the GOP were in control from 2000-2006, were they socialists? And the only "hyperinflation" that exists presently is in your misinformed brain. We are presently in a deflationary recession.

2) No one is asking to disarm anyone. The 2nd amendment has been litigated. No one is coming to take away your guns. You would know that if you had knowledge of the Supreme Court Case law. You do not possess such knowledge, therefore you regurgitate nonsense that you hear on Glen Beck.

3) Control of the media? You mean, like state owned? Are you insane? What country is there state owned media, America?

4) More teabat bullshit. Czar is just a name for someone appointed to a position, like chairman. It does not imply that there is central control of the executive branch.

5) Overrun the borders? You mean Ronald Reagan, who started all of this when he was Governor of California, and continued it as POTUS when he signed the first amnesty bill? Do you realize that the true reason behind illegal immigration is so that the corporate agricultural crowd and manufacturing sectors could gain access to cheap labor, bypassing and destroying the unions? You are not aware of that, are you.

6) Every civilized nation in the world--except us-- provides healthcare to its citizens. More teabot gobbedly gook.

7) According to the conservative think tank, The Brookings Institute, taxes under Obama are at their lowest in 60 years. Because of loopholes, the wealthy often pay a much lower percentage of their income to the IRS. You were not aware of this either, were you.

8) Did the government create a crisis in Arizona the other day? No, you teabats created a plethora of crisises, deluding yourselves with all of this paranoia and hysterical nonsense.

9) Good point, but that is not socialism. That is what occurs in a fascist society. Get your "isms" straight. You teabats often misapply your isms.

10) Who is taking God out of the equation? Just last night, President Obama and a host of Democrats cited bible passages in their speeches.

To sum up, you are confused, misinformed, undereducated and most importantly, completely talking our of your anus.

And that is what makes you a teabat!

Virgil;I have listened to your bullshit know it crap on this blog for months. Trust me I will stack my education against yours any day. I hold a doctorate degree. I also have a bachelors degree in political science and I am an author.1. Would you agree that the process of destroying the middle class has been exacerbated under the Obama Administration?2 why do you assume I listen to Glen Beck. but if you read the news there are some lawmakers already proposing laws like no one can have a gun wihtin a thousnd feet of a elected official.3. I was referring to attempts to control the internet and the vilification of fox news. the governments attempt to insert the Fairness Doctrine as a means of ending talk radio.4. Assuming that the Country Club republican left the borders open to create a working underclass this may be true. Do two wrongs make a right? In any of my statements ever have i ever absolved the republicans.5.There have been 47 Czars appointed under Obama without being vetted except for the communist Vance Jones.6. healthcare with debating this lunacy let me just state can we afford it at the present time.7 the crisis; Healthcare was a crisis, the first second Tarp stimulus was a crisis, the housing crisis. Hell there was even a crisis last week becasue the Democrats say on the budget for six months and that had to get result in the last week of this congress. Its all designed in my opinion to limit the vetting of the facts becasue everything need to get asap becasue after all its a crisis.8. Am i wrong that the president wanted to extend the Bush tax cuts except for the wealthy those earning more than 250,000 per year. Did I make that up?9 we agree but who is behind it. That is the question. I suspect it is both sides.10 the point is that some people call it natural law and some people call them God given laws but in essence are not given to us by the government and cannot be taken away(inalienable).

I surmise that your problem is that you are unable to connect the dots and see where this whole thing is going

Model Citizen
Model Citizen

Now that we're beyond spelling and grammar:

You said:

"if you read the news there are some lawmakers already proposing laws like no one can have a gun wihtin a thousnd feet of a elected official."

The lawmaker that is proposing that is a Republican. One of the only sensible ones.

Republican representative Louie Gohmert, on the other hand, wants members of Congress to carry weapons on the house floor.

Which is more disturbing?

You said:

"the governments attempt to insert the Fairness Doctrine as a means of ending talk radio."

What? There is no attempt on "the government's" behalf or otherwise to restore the Fairness Doctrine. They probably should, but no one is pursuing that. You are simply paranoid.

"There have been 47 Czars appointed under Obama without being vetted..."

As Virgil mentioned, the word "czar" simply means "chairperson" or "administrator". They are staff members with no power other than advisory roles. Obama has had a few more than Bush but the country's population and the size of government has expanded dramatically (most notably under the Bush administration).

"healthcare with debating this lunacy let me just state can we afford it at the present time."

It's truly bizarre how conservatives are opposed to the healthcare bill. It is based on right-wing values such as "every man should take care of himself." The only explanation for Republican opposition is that Obama supports it. Period. Currently, hospitals must provide emergency care -- THAT ALL TAXPAYERS PAY FOR -- to any freeloader that walks into the emergency room. It costs us BILLIONS every year. Under "Obamacare," people must procure their own health insurance that covers them when they are ill, INSTEAD OF SOAKING THE HARD WORKING TAX PAYERS FOR THE BILL.

You conservatives should be jumping for joy at the prospect of not having to pay for all of the freeloaders that opt not to pay for their own insurance, a concept that is almost identical to mandated auto insurance that everyone supports. The fact that you don't says a lot about your character.

Model Citizen
Model Citizen

First of all, what kind of "author" doesn't proofread his writing before publishing it?

The particularly egregious crap (too many fuck-ups to list them all):

"I have listened to your know it crap..."

Do you mean KNOW-IT-ALL crap?

"healthcare with debating this lunacy let me just state we can afford it at the present time."

Huh? Are you trying to say that "WITHOUT debating this, let me state that we CANNOT afford it at the present time"? You're not making any sense.

"the first second Tarp stimulus was a crisis, the housing crisis"

Well was it the FIRST or the SECOND or THE FIRST AND SECOND? WTF????

"Hell there was even a crisis last week BECASUE the Democrats say on the budget for six months and that had to get result in the last week of this congress. Its all designed in my opinion to limit the vetting of the facts BECASUE everything need to get asap BECASUE after all its a crisis."

What in the world does this gobbledygook sentence mean?

"Am i wrong that the president wanted to extend the Bush tax cuts except for the wealthy those earning more than 250,000 per year. "

You write bullshit like this and consider yourself an "author"?

"we agree but who is behind it."

Is that a question? Where's the god-damned question mark?

And you think VIRGIL can't "connect the dots"?

Please post a link to some of the fucktarded books you've written for our reading pleasure.

Too bad nobody went through all this hoopla when the great American Pat Tillman was gunned down by his own troops when he was serving his country in Afghanistan.

Is this Giffords broad a jew?

I can think of no other reason why she has been so idolized when a sitting US Federal judge was SHOT AND KILLED the same day with hardly an afterthought.

And I do not give a flying fuck who attacks me over this, we send American troops all over the world to kill people everyday and everbody gets their panties in a bunch when that same behaviour hits home...too bad, you reap what you sow and all energies of the universe travel in a circular orbit.

There was alot of "hoopla" over the Pat Tillman shooting, an enormous amount of hoopla. In fact, the Weinstein brothers financed a documentary about that story. You may be not aware that under Talmudic law, Loughner is jewish as well, as his mother is a practicing jew, attending the same synagogue as Gabrielle Giffords, so religion does not appear to be relevant here at all.

You really think the media is making a big deal about Giffords because she is a jew? Then, how do you explain the"hoopla" over Michael Jackson's death?

He danced too well to be a jew.

False Flag ALERT.......

What this is REALLY ABOUT:

Most threateningly, Rep. Robert Brady (D-PA) is crafting a bill which will give members of Congress special protection from criticism. Then it will be not just homosexuals and racial minorities with special rights and privileges, but also beleaguered Democrats.

Rep. Robert Brady, D-Pennsylvania, said he will introduce legislation making it a federal crime for a person to use language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a member of Congress or federal official... Brady is particularly incensed over a web posting by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin during the 2010 election in which she targeted 20 House Democrats, including Giffords, for political defeat. The posting showed a map of the United States in the 20 Democratic districts identified by cross-hairs... 'You can't put bulls-eyes or cross-hairs on a congressman or federal official...' Brady said... it is now time to put an end to the hyper-charged language. 'The rhetoric is just ramped up so negatively, so high, that we have got to shut this down,'... Brady noted that he wanted to have it ready as soon as possible. (CNN)

Whose perceptions will determine if a word or image might incite others to violence? Will it be ADL or its lackeys, such as US Attorney General Eric Holder? Or perhaps the FBI, working in close communication with such "thought police?"

One of the problems with people and guns is when and where to use it such as the case of Fitroy Salesman who over reacted thinking, his life was threatened . If other irrational persons were armed it could have been another senseless massacre of innocent bystanders.A gun should only be exposed and used as a last resort if your life or another is in grave danger!!!....Some carry a gun and think they are the law ,that is a very dangerous attitude!!!

Just watched the footage you added showing the Republican Party of Broward at the firing range. Scary to think that some of these maroons might be beside me at a Publix or Walgreens checkout.

It also made me wonder about the older, amiable-sounding woman who is frequently on camera: where was she and what was she doing between 1933 and 1945?

skydove
skydove

From her accent, the older woman surely was in Europe, maybe the USSR, during WW II; but unless she's well into her 90s now, she probably doesn't remember a lot about the early Hitler years.

What I wonder about is what she was doing at the gun range, all made up, smiling and laughing and flirting with the camera and gabbling (fast forward to Stacy Ritter after her release from prison). Perhaps she was being used, but what the user had hoped to accomplish is hard to see. What was the point of the video?

The heavyset guy who did most of the talking seemed to be representing the range, not the Republicans, and he seemed to have viewed the event as an opportunity to sell guns. Do the Republicans want it known that their women didn't know how to shoot before and still don't? The first lady didn't even hit the target she was aiming at; you couldn't tell from the video whether the older woman came any closer. Who benefits from distributing this information?

Meanwhile, Goldilocks, I don't think you have to worry about sharing a Publix aisle with anyone in a suit and tie, bearing an AK. The other more redneck-looking shooters may well do their own shopping, but by and large they're probably so focused on not having their guns confiscated for any reason that they'd never take stupid chances in a public place. This of course doesn't mean that with the detention of Loughner, we are now safe from armed crazies.

Billy_Delions
Billy_Delions

I also like her position that the govt. should never take away our guns, but then she reveals that this is the first time she has ever used a gun, WTF? Really? Who coached the lady to express the idea of gun ownership as a God given right when it is clear that she has never even fired a hand gun before the video preformance?

I am also pretty sure that the goverment is not afraid to make policy based on the fear of an armed citizenry!!! A classic example of a "knuckledragger" interpretation of the Constitution!!!!! Pretty sure that this guy was not the most engaged student during 6th grade civics class.

Instead of everyone focusing on gun control, why not use this opportunity to address this country's ability to identify, isolate and treat people with mental illnesses. Brady shot Reagan - Brady bill comes, but wasn't Brady mentally unstable. Chapman shot Lennon - We can all agree he was nuts. Ted K., nuts. There is huge difference between a gun owner and a mentally ill person with a gun. Everyone has the ability to pull a trigger, but few can do it with no regrets. The mentally ill fall into the category of people most likely to committ the type of mass murder we saw last week. Drug dealers, robbers and common thugs rarely pop rounds off at random, innocent people. I know innocent people are killed all the time due to that type of stuff, but it is usually not intentional. Loughner was expelled from a community college -- for Christ's sake, how many people in this country are expelled from a college each year. The number is exponentially smaller than those who purchase guns. Factor in those expelled for bizarre, aggressive behavior and the number decreases even more. This country has so many damn lists for safety sake, why not have a list of people expelled for acting like Loughner acted in school. We should require some sort of mandatory follow up and reporting to some agency when a persons' erratic actions require expulsion. Gun ownership is not a disease, mental illness is a disease and must be identified and treated.

DeathFrog3
DeathFrog3

Ok, a factual error in your post. Brady was Reagan's press secretary not the guy who shot him. That was John Hinkley, JR. I would agree that the treatment of the mentally ill be a priority and keeping them away from guns is also of paramount importance. How do you propose to do that? require anyone purchasing a firearm to takean MMPPI?

Aol
Aol

I believe you mean ' Hinckle shot Reagan, Hinckle also shot Brady, hence the Brady Bill. I think we need to keep in mind that most if not all persons that kill or Stalk celebrities and politicians all suffer from mental illness. Keeping guns and weapons out of their hands is impossible, all we can ever do is tighten security. Not the answer most people want, but it is the only thing that can be done. Crime Prevention is only delaying crime, detering crime and detaining the culprit. Lets face it, only after a tradgedy does enhancements take place? I mean every new car comes with anti-theft devices but new cars still get stolen?

gimmesamore
gimmesamore

Yep - thanks for setting me straight. Had a lapse of senility. Your points are well taken and I agree with them. I just think, in this recent shooting, way too many people and institutions had the ability to alert officials. We make sex offenders (convicted albeit) register and "introduce" themselves to their neighbors. They are actually tracked online as well. All I am saying is that when a person is actually expelled from an institution of learning for erratic, aggressive behavior, it has to be reported to some government agency. Stop worrying about whether someone is "convicted" or found guilty before saying something. Do you know how difficult it is to get expelled for something other than academic fraud these days? I guarantee the list of expulsions for actions like Loughner's is under a 1000 per year, country wide. That's a tiny list of names the FBI could add to a background database in a heartbeat. I know its just vein of a multilane highway, but its an obvious place to start.

Virgil Starkwell
Virgil Starkwell

P.S. No one wants to take your right away to shoot a squirrel with an AK47. We don't want to take away your entertainment.

All we are asking--the community of level headed adults-- is to please undergo a stricter background check so that we can "maybe" weed out some of the nutcases.

Is that too much to ask?

Virgil Starkwell
Virgil Starkwell

You just made the case for stricter gun control legislation. A mentally ill person should never be allowed to waltz into a retail store in this country and legally purchase a firearm without undergoing a "real" background check, one that includes a psychological evaluation and interviews with one's professors, classmates, friends, family members, etc:

Unfortunately, we do not have such a system because conservatives have fought all reasonable attempts at regulation.

Could a nutcase like this gain access to a weapon illegally? Of course, but we don't make public policy decisions based on a defeatist's attitude. If you can stop one mentally ill person from gaining access to a gun, and if you can prevent even one tragedy like the one in Arizona,

THEN YOU DO IT!

gimmesamore
gimmesamore

Virgil - I did not make an argument for gun control, I made a suggestion that we develop a procedure to identify unstable and possibly violent individuals. When are you going to finally concede that the 2nd Amendment will not be overturned?

If Loughner's school had reported his expulsion, including the reasoning for same to some governmental agency, which communicates with the FBI relative to gun background checks, this may have been avoided. I agree there are many shortcomings with the ability to purchase a handgun, but we can't stop that transaction. What we can do is a better job at identifying and notifying the FBI of potential dangers.

A good example is how flight schools must now report every applicant to ADDITIONAL government regulators, including the FBI, FAA, etc... But we must have the list and a system for other types potential dangers such as mental illness when same includes violent outbursts or aggressive actions.

You and I are on the same page here - I am for stricter laws. I have a CWP and can buy a handgun on the spot in Florida - no 3 day waiting period, nothing. I can cash and carry at a gun show, pay cash and walk out with a cache of weapons.

The extended clips must be highly controlled and I see no need for armour piercing ammo for the general public.

I'm not sure what stricter background checks we can have at this point. Are you suggesting every potential gun purchaser under go a psych exam?

Many people seem to say we need stricter gun laws, but nobody on that side of the argument makes specific recommendations. Do you have any you would like to share.

Always a pleasure reading your comments!

Virgil Starkwell
Virgil Starkwell

I don't believe the 2nd amendment should be overturned. All I am suggesting is that anyone who applies to purchase a firearm should have a much more thorough and extensive background check, to possibley include a psychological evaluation.

I think that is reasonable and I believe the founding fathers did not intend to allow the mentally ill to gain access to firearms.

I'm in agreement with your other solutions and am not anti-firearm. I am anti-stupid people with firearms and there are too many stupid people in ths country with firearms.

Therefore, the law abiding and normal people have to jump through some extra hoops.
