What About the Third Broward Queen?

ritterliebermanothers.jpg
Ritter, Lieberman, and Keechl during the power days.
I know that we have been accused of queening it up too much, you, me, and [Ilene] Lieberman, the three queens on the County Commission. But I can't really think of anybody I would rather queen it up with than you.

-- Stacy Ritter to Ken Keechl

Two queens of Broward down, one to go.

Former Broward Mayor Ken Keechl was beaten at the polls, so he's gone (though they're apparently planning a new Lobbyist Ken doll). Ilene Lieberman has reportedly told everyone she knows that she's leaving politics, and political friend Sheila Alu all but announced here that she is running for her seat.

So what about Stacy Ritter? What will be the fate of our third queen?

Despite charges filed against her by the Florida Election Commissions and active criminal investigations into her conduct by the State Attorney's Office, she shows few signs of slowing down. She has been holding regular (if poorly attended) coffees with voters, putting up videos of herself on YouTube, and her "chief of staff," former radio man Ken Pauli, is sending out releases about her at a regular clip. She's put on her brave fighter's face and is out there comparing her travails to those of George Washington and LeBron James.

On her Twitter page, she recently echoed NFL player Darnell Dockett, writing: "H.A.T.E.R.S = Having Anger Towards Everyone Reaching Success."

Well, she better keep up the attitude, because I hear she's in for a fight if she manages to survive in office until 2012. One name keeps coming up as someone who is almost a lock to run against her -- and it's someone who likely has the electoral power to break her already crumbling political stronghold.

Inside, we reveal the name and some other interesting details.

Well-connected sources say that state Rep. Ari Porth is going to run against the embattled Ritter.

They say that Porth, whose day job is as a state prosecutor, has already brought up the idea to his boss, Michael Satz, and that Satz told Porth that if he runs against Ritter, he will have to step down from his prosecutor job. The reason Satz gave for this was that the SAO is actively investigating Ritter, and it would be a glaring conflict of interest if he were to remain working as a prosecutor while challenging her seat.

porthkeechl[1].jpg
Porth, right, with Keechl
But Porth must have figured he wouldn't be able to hold both posts anyway. I left a message for comment at his office and will update when I hear back.

This has been brewing since at least June, when Porth took aim at Ritter over her consistent efforts to derail ethics reform at both the county and state level.

"Unfortunately, instead of making policy arguments, County Commissioner Stacy Ritter continues to rail against the measure, and me personally," Porth wrote of his efforts at strengthening ethics laws. "She lobbied against its passage and scolded me publicly for working with a Republican member of our county's legislative delegation. Then she appeared at a Democratic club in Tamarac, where she used scare tactics to a largely senior audience to suggest that implementation of such an office would mean closure of parks and libraries."

Boy, does that sound like our Broward queen or what?

By the way, it's not only Porth who the political folks are talking about taking aim at Ritter's seat. It's also Parkland Mayor Michael Udine. I managed to get him on the phone, and he wasn't shy to say that he is considering a run for Ritter's seat. But he also said he's busy with family events right now and likely won't give it serious thought and make a decision until March.

The long and short of it is that Ritter is seen as vulnerable and weak, and even if she makes it all the way to the 2012 election for her commission seat, she'll almost surely face the political fight of her life.

-- Yesterday, we learned again in horrific fashion what the men and women of law enforcement face every day -- great danger while protecting the public that could turn fatal at any moment. Two Miami police officers, both of them Broward residents, were gunned down during an attempt to arrest a known violent felon. Roger Castillo, who lived in Davie, was a family man and father of three young kids. Amanda Haworth, of Margate, was a single mom. They sacrificed their lives for us. Today, try to find a way to honor them -- and all of those police officers and deputies and state and federal agents they left behind who put themselves in danger's way on a daily basis.

Dear Broward County Commission,

Just a reminder: We the People are the master and YOU are our servants. What part of this do you not understand?

Sorry but we are NOT rid of Ilene Lieberman until she steps down. At the moment we are paying her a high salary and overly generous benefits to do NOTHING. Last week she read a brief, vague statement and apparently this week she repeated it verbatim. Anywhere else this would never have gone on this long. We are not rid of her and we should be.

I know that the 3 queens would say that the comment was made in jest. That said, how arrogant is it for ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES to refer to themselves as aristocracy? Clearly the problem with politics today. Electeds look at their positions as rulers instead of public servants.

Until there is a shift in that paradigm we will continue to have these pols do what is best for them and not what is best for the community.

If she's still in a position to run for office in 2012 - quite frankly, I give up.

Any Porth in a storm .

Whoever we get is likely to be just as bad, sad to say.

I wonder if Mr. Porth launched or instigated said investigation of Ritter to skew the odds in his own favor. It's quite clear who has been leaking so much pertinent information. The plot thickens.

Enough about Keechel. He is gone and old news. Focus on Ritter and Klenet and let's get them gone too.

I still can't believe the BRAVO channel has yet to cast these three in "The Housewives of Broward County."

I think they can give the crew from Jersey a run for their money.

When speaking of scare tactics against our senior citizens, such a picture brings up an episode that occurred with the Board of the Broward County Commissioners (almost 18-years ago, in October of 1993). Instead of “scare tactics to a largely senior audience to suggest that implementation of such an office would mean closure of parks and libraries,” the commissioners used a specific agenda item to scare the senior citizens under the guise of protecting the schools (and the safety and security of our children).

That particular evening hearing will always stay with me, because that was the only time that I got so sick of going against the corruption-spewing public servants that I wanted to quit. It was so bad that I could not force myself into the chambers, and the only thing that I could do was type out an objection to that hearing and its ploy. I made sure that this objection was properly filed prior to the start of the hearing, and I left -- so that I did not have to witness these seniors parroting the desires of the commissioners, as though what they were saying was the truth of the matter. These seniors had had the wool pulled over their eyes, and they had been bused into the downtown area (by the carloads, vanloads, & busloads) to do the bidding of these corrupted public servants. It was truly a pathetic site to see these elderly individuals trying to be so helpful, yet unwittingly tearing apart the protection of the rules and laws that had been established to protect the children and the taxpaying citizenry.

I suppose that you would have to have been there or in a similar situation to feel the repulsion that I do. I spoke to many of the elderly who were being used, and it broke my heart to understand that they were merely trying to help, but were being lead to do the exact opposite. Some had gotten up out of sick beds. Some had left ailing family members. Some were so frail that they needed assistance. Yet, they were all there to do what they could for those who needed a voice -- our school-age children, who could not be heard, because of their minority-age. These elderly had arranged to speak as guardians of the future, but (because of the misrepresentations of those in office, who, at that time, were Lori Parrish, Scott Cowan, Sylvia Poitier, et ux et al), the message delivered accomplished nothing for the betterment of the county, but, instead, removed the protections that had been firmly established.

At the moment, I am going through my files to try to retrieve the particulars of this incident. And, I have called my brother to see if he can find a copy of all of the documents that were used by me to prove that the hearing was a sham and played out only to aid and abet those making money off the funding system for the parks and the schools. This episode occurred BEFORE I became involved with an environmental group, and, in fact, was one of the reasons (along with what had occurred, through the allowance of the county commissioners, with the Sani-Med medical waste incinerator and crematoriums that had been allowed to spew toxic waste over entire communities) that I accepted the highest post in that environmental organization. Little did I know that this “Ann Kolb” environmental group was so much like the Board of Broward County Commissioners. It seemed as though everyone on the non-profit board (like those on the Board of County Commissioners) wanted an office or had a family member in public office.

It is obscene that so many have been used by public servants in order to benefit so few (whether joining with others to speak for the betterment of the people or belonging to groups that are supposed to support the people). However, it is a worse feeling that those who have been used have thought that they were working or volunteering for the betterment of whatever societal group that they represented. I don’t know how this can change -- except that I do know that Bob Norman publishing certain details on his blog has awakened the citizenry and the articles and comments have helped to bring awareness to the REAL TRUTH, not that which has been made up by our public servant-politicians. So, in this New Year, I do hope that truth reigns supreme, and that those corrupted public servants (are not just exposed but) get their comeuppance, whether a State prison or federal pen.

If Porth would just file charges he might not have to run against her. I'm still hopeful.

What Stacy would need is an awesome Campaign Manager. Personally I think you would be perfect for the job. Where do you sign up?

Ari Porth would be a wonderful County Commissioner. He is responsive to his constituents, always returns phone calls and e-mails, and has no negative political baggage. I was not happy when he supported Charlie Crist over Kendrick Meek, but that seemed to prove that he does what HE thinks is right, regardless of the political machine. Ari would be a big step forward in bringing ethical service to Broward.

A BIG THANK YOU.

Funny Kenny, I heard that from someone else too. For some reason it reminded me of Bill Keith, the late engineer, who would always repeat "yaknowwamean?" It was one word. Anyway, I'll have to watch that.

Nucky, I think that you're not correct on this one. Ari Porth is honest, has integrity, and, is the legislator that I think every voter wished that they had: He's responsive, he follows up, he truly CARES about his constituents, he's reachable, and there is NO hint of scandal around him. He's the REAL DEAL!!!!

I will say on the record that Porth has never leaked any information to me and I've never heard of that ever happening. Say what you will about Porth, but he's very professional.

Also I understand the bad blood between Porth and Ritter goes back several years. Not sure when it began. But it's a history that seems to bode well for Porth.

I have a young step-niece who was reading this comment from Virgil and she asked, "Uncle Bum, may I use your account to respond to Mr. Starkwell's comment?"

"What do you want to write?" I asked.

"ROTF LOL APMN," she responded.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

She replied, " 'Rolling on the floor, laughing out loud and peeing my nappy', of course. Uncle Bum, you are so-not down wid it."

"Dear," I responded, "please do so. I was 'down with' it just moments before the Big Bang. But first, get your 14-month-old, half-British diapered ass off my laptop."

"Woo Koo! Thanks, Uncle Bum."

And so it happened.
