Ari Porth Caves In To Radical Idiot

Categories: Politics

State Rep. Ari Porth agreed to speak this weekend at a convention of the Islamic Society of North America in Fort Lauderdale.

Thumbnail image for cristporthhm.jpg
Porth with Crist
But Porth bailed out yesterday, canceling his speech. Why? Because of pressure from a local extremist named Joe Kaufman put pressure on him, who told him that ISNA was linked to terrorists.

The ISNA, of course, is not a terrorist group. It is a non-violent group of American Muslims. Some involved with the group have had fundraising ties in the past to controversial Palestinian groups, including Hamas, but considering the madness of the Middle East that is bound to happen. The important thing is that ISNA reached out to Porth in an attempt to open a relationship and start some intelligent dialogue. That's a good thing, right?

But Porth bowed out after Kaufman -- whose own dialogue could never be described as intelligent -- got to him. Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief also reportedly dropped out of the convention, but she said she never agreed to attend in the first place (does that sound familiar?). Porth fled the scene after he was hit with angry emails, one of them chiding Porth for supporting our "Muslim-born Pretendent." Inside see why the rep should have run from Kaufman instead.

So who is Joe Kaufman? In short, he's a legal assistant who lives in Broward County who gins up as much hatred as he can on the Internet with a site ironically called "Americans Against Hate."

kaufman.jpg
Kaufman
For an idea of Kaufman's views, let's look at a column he wrote after September 11. The headline says it all, "Making Friends With The Enemy ... The Nuclear Way." An excerpt:

Question: If the decimation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the right thing to do, in response to Pearl Harbor, then why the heck are we saving our nuclear weapons now? And furthermore, if we're not using them, why do we have the nukes in the first place? After all, there is no more Soviet Union to compete with. If the attacks are not a good enough reason to use them, then what are we holding on to them for?!!!

Now, at this point, you may think of me as being no less than a madman, but hear me out, for I have a method to my madness.

This is a perfect example of Kaufman's penchant for misinformation and illogic. Hiroshima and Nagasaki of course were not in retaliation for Pearl Harbor but a bid to win the war without more loss of American lives (and it's debatable ). He also posits in the column that Iraq is behind the Anthrax scare, which amounted to more false innuendo.

What is the method to his madness? Well Kaufman doesn't want to blow up the entire Muslim world. He just called for nuclear strikes against Syria and Iraq. "We should nuke Damascas," he wrote. You can read the entire rant here.

In 2006, he began protesting a religious retreat for Muslims at a Presbyterian camp in Tampa, calling it a "jihad camp for children" and making unsubstantiated claims it had ties to al-Qaida. On his website he photoshopped images of masked terrorists outside the camp. It led to death threats against the camp that hosted the event, according to the St. Petersburg Times, including this one aimed at retreat organizer Jennifer Valko: "I will undress you paint your body with pig fat & light you. America is on to you! Watch your back!"

In a St. Pete Times article about Kaufman headlined "Are Bloggers Against Hate, or Feeding It?", the newspaper learned what motivated him:

As a boy, Kaufman says he was tormented for being Jewish, which shaped his view of himself.

"These kids turned me into an animal," Kaufman said.

In college, things were better with more friends, especially his roommate, he said. Then he came back to his dorm room one day to see a swastika flag on the wall.

"It was like time stopped for me. And I thought to myself, either I'm going to go through this for the rest of my life, or I'm going to fight it."

Kaufman said he got his roommate kicked out of school for smoking marijuana.

"It made me feel ... that I finally punished the people who were punishing me all of my life."

On Sept. 11, 2001, watching the World Trade Center's twin towers fall, he said it felt again as if time had stopped.

"I decided, like I'd decided in college, to fight against hatred."

Nobody with any brains takes this guy seriously, but he convinced Porth -- who is supposed to represent all his constituents, including Muslims -- to abandon his speech with the ISNA. And now Kaufman is bragging on his website about how he spoke with Porth and changed his mind.

Ari, it's Saturday morning. Get up now and go and talk to the ISNA like a man, like you promised. It the right thing to do.

Where do you get your info, you need to do your homework a little better and not believe what your State Dept. tells you; can a person of your intelligence be that naive or blind? Do you believe that CAIR is a good organization as well? Can't carry on a debate in this format, as have other things to do, but suggest you read what one of "theirs" has to say by reading "Son of Hamas", written by the Son of one of the Founders of Hamas, Mosab Hassan Yousef. I'm not Jewish, nor am I a "Rightie", just one who doesn't want to be led around by people like you who spit out rhetoric that is totally out of line and unsubstantiated; it makes you no better than the people you are criticle about sir.

Once again, Joe Kaufman (“JK”) is throwing his poison around S. Fl.! Joe Kaufman is again promoting hatred against decent, loyal, American/Muslim organizations. JK has a history of verbally attacking Muslim organizations and Muslim leaders. He brings lies and unfounded allegations in an attempt to instigate hatred and distrust between American Muslims and the Jewish communities. JK’s latest twist is to intimidate Jewish leaders who are working peacefully alongside Muslim leaders. Anyone visiting the JK website will realize that this person is not against hate – rather, he is promoting hatred against President Obama and all Muslim organizations in the U.S. JK both supports and works closely with other bigots like Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Brigitte Gabriel, David Horowitz, William Mayer. JK took a strong stand against J. Street for their honorable stand in support of a peaceful solution between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Unfortunately, the Anti- Defamation League (“ADL”), never condemned Joe Kaufman or even distanced its’ organization from the relentless, defamatory remarks made by Joe Kaufman. Joe Kaufman is a radical, Jewish extremist. JK has been known as a supporter of a terrorist organization listed by the U.S. State Department called the “Jewish Defense League,” (“JDL”), and “Kach Supporters.” In an article written in January, 2001, in a forum of the Jewish Defense League, activist Joe Kaufman praised the Kahane movement and its’ founder, Meir Kahane. In that article Kaufman said of Kahane: “…It was perfectly understandable, if he were to have hated Arabs. Just like during the Holocaust, it was perfectly understandable for a Jew to hate Germans…If the Kahanes’ memory serves us any purpose; it’s to show that trust (and peace) is ultimately between only ourselves…” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M... - In another article he wrote entitled "Making Friends with the Enemy... The Nuclear Way" (2001, Nov. 18), JK stated, "…we're spending too much time kissing behinds and dropping food and not enough time dropping bombs. And when I say bombs, I'm not talking about the "bottle rockets" we've been launching at the Taliban…I'm talking about major (and minor) nukes! After all, there is no more Soviet Union to compete with. If the attacks are not a good enough reason to use them, then what are we holding on to them for?!!!" http://www.floridajewish.com/s... - Sofian Zakkout, www.al-amana.org

The ISNA Event was a great success. I enjoyed the presentations and most importantly enjoyed the Muslim community coming together as one. The South Florida Muslim population is one of the most diverse communities in the nation. We have Muslims from all over the world that have emigrated here to make this home. With them came a brilliant diversity of culture and ethnicities that make up the roots and liberties guaranteed to us by the United States. With over a billion and a half Muslims world wide and over a million and a half here in the US (and growing) I encourage all of my fellow Americans to learn about Islam and your Muslim neighbors.

The unfortunate tactics used by individuals and organizations to demonize Islam and create a fear that Muslims are trying to take over is nothing but deception. One of the signs of the Day of Judgment is the coming of the Anti-Christ. The Anti-Christ will use a system of deception that will bring many to follow him and leave the straight path to God. This system is calculated and the most dangerous tactic that we are facing even today. This system is called “Deception”. The Anti-Christ will make the Lawful or “Good” look Unlawful or “Bad”, and the unlawful or “Bad” look Lawful or “Good”. Basically he will successfully turn society against itself. Let me put this into context so the readers don’t misquote me and say I am calling someone the Anti-Christ. I am specifically speaking about the system he will use,” Deception”.

Let’s use the war in Iraq as an example. We were led to believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that is why we declared war and invaded Iraq. So Iraq was made to look “Bad” and the “Good” was the invasion to secure our freedom. We now know that this entire premise of invasion was “Deception”. There were no weapons of mass destruction and thousands of innocent American soldiers and Iraq’s lost their lives. Why, because of “Deception”. Willing or unwilling, it was still “Deception”. The actual “Bad” was the invasion and loss of innocent life; the actual “Good” was not to declare an unnecessary war!

Now let’s put this event hosted by ISNA into the picture. The protesters claim that ISNA has terrorist ties and they should be shut down. The protesters also claim every other national Islamic organization (Including my own) have terrorist ties. So, ISNA is the “Bad” and shutting them down is the “Good”. MMMMM”. So the protesters think United States Government is

allowing terrorist organizations to operate and hold conventions. “MMMMMM” I don’t think so! Any reasonable person can see that this is “Deception”.

So what do we do as Americans to find out the truth? It’s actually very easy. Do some research! With a simple effort you will see that the Islamic Organizations that the protesters claim have terrorist ties have done absolutely nothing but help our fellow Americans!

I encourage all of my fellow Americans to reach out to each other, learn about Islam and Muslims from the knowledgeable Muslims. If you want to learn about something learn from a reliable source. Let me explain!

If you want to learn about Islam you should learn from a practicing Muslim that can give you in-depth explanations and provide Islamic proof for the explanations. I mentioned “Deception” earlier in my posting. Currently individuals and organizations are saying Islam and Muslims are “Bad” and isolating, dividing, profiling, and discriminating against are “Good”. Take this exact snap shot and rewind to the time of the great,” Martin Luther King Jr”. The African American Race was the “Bad” and isolating, dividing, profiling, and discriminating against them was the “Good”. We of course know that this was an extreme evil that has no place in society.

If any readers of this article want to truly learn about Islam, please give me a call and I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have regarding Islam. I can also put you in contact with your local Islamic Center to visit and meet your fellow Americans. Please call me at 954-272-0490.

Mr. Bob Norman.......you seem to support the domestic wife beating the event speaker was going to expound on durring his speaking slot. Are you saying that Ari Porth should have gone to the event to support spousal abuse?

Jamal Badawi, an author and lecturer who has advocated domestic violence against women. In his book, Gender Equity in Islam, Badawi states that, if a wife has shown disobedience towards her husband, her husband is permitted to beat her. He calls this a "permissible beating" and says that by taking this action, it can "save the marriage." Jamal Badawi has had alleged links to terrorist organizations including the Muslim Brotherhood Group. ISNA was co-founded by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) leader and convicted terrorist Sami al-Arian, and the organization was recently named by the U.S. government a co-conspirator for a federal trial dealing with the financing of millions of dollars to Hamas.

Why is everyone so fixated on Joe Kaufman and not discussing ISNA? Is it perhaps because you really don't know anything about ISNA and you are too lazy to research it?

This country was founded on freedom of religion. Pulp you nailed it in the title of the blog “Radical Idiot” – many thanks. Perhaps Kauffman should start learning some history – maybe begin with William Penn; that would be a great start! You’re 15 minutes are now officially up Kauffman!

Kauffman if you are so bothered by 9/11 then push the city, the govt. to do a real criminal investigation; it’s never had a proper one! A good friend of mine who actually lost a relative in 9/11 started this movement –http://www.nyccan.org I can tell you that they are not satisfied with the stories they were given & want an investigation.

The ISNA is an orginization that supports political Islam. Political Islam is anti-democracy. There is no separation of mosque and state in this worldview. If you really want the truth about the radical Islamic organizations in the United States, read about it at the American Islamic Forum for Democracy www.aifdemocracy.org. This organization (AIFD) was founded by a practicing Muslim who was a Navy officer and is a practicing physician. His name is Dr. Zuhdi Jasser and he was born in the U.S. to immigrant Muslim parents who fled Syria. He will be speaking this month on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 2 pm in Boca Raton. You can find more information at www.fsmes.org. So you don't want to believe what Joe Kauffman has to say about ISNA. Fine, but what will you say to those Muslims who understand political Islam, and identify ISNA, MSA, CAIR, and other Muslim organizations in this country as promoters of political Islam?

Sounds no different than the zionists, who continue to wage an apartheid against an entire society of people based on something that is stated in their bible from thousands of years ago.

The zionists are just as theocratic--no separation of church and state--and I would argue just as dangerous.

Creepy is right! Made me think of Blair Witch Project as reimagined by someone seriously twisted, who dresses himself as a deformed piece of garbage (which would seem to represent pretty good self-knowledge), attempts to engage his viewers' attention with economy and a certain amount of patience, then leaves the scene, with only the burned flagpole remaining in the peaceful desert spot.

A list of books he says he liked includes works by Orwell, Homer, Aesop, Plato, Lewis Carroll, Kesey, Bradbury, Hemingway, Hesse, Marx, and Hitler. He also cited The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Very true. I wasn't suggesting that this Jared read all those books with mature comprehension. You have to wonder what they're teaching the kids in school these days. Apparently the students don't get a lot of help with putting satire into perspective. & they seem to be immersing themselves in these powerful materials without having invested time in grounding themselves in world history. It will be interesting to hear the recollections sure to be elicited from the young man's high school and college teachers.

I am only going to say this once, then sit back and take my hits like a man. All religions, but specifically Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianism, Druidism, Hinduism Islam, Jonestownism, Judaism, Mansonism, Satanism, Shintoism, Wiccanism, and Zoroastrianism, are bad ideas, at least in practice. They are cults. If you have a belief in any particular religion and I left it off the list, please accept my apology, as a say “Yes, yours too.”

Kaufman is a symptom of a much larger problem, namely the theocratic and extremist nature of modern day zionism. These dogmatic and hate filled extremists are doing a great disservice to the great jewish people.

Unfortunately, this dangerous movement has taken a foothold in Israel and has perverted and harmed the image of Israel throughout the world. In fact, these radical zionists are actually increasing the level of real anti-semitism thoughout the world.

Recently, there has been a movement in Israel to dissuade jewish property owners rom selling or renting their homes to "foreigners", specifically arabs. A contingent of 300 Rabbis actually endorsed this decree, which is quite remarkable. Can you imagine if a group of 300 Christian Ministers publicly proclaimed that members of their congregation should not rent or sell their homes to non-christians?

Fascism is rearing it's ugly head again, ironically in the State of Israel. The apartheid-like policies of their coalition government are consistently found to be in violation of International law. What they are doing to the Palestinian people--under the pretext of security-- in Gaza and the West Bank is an international disgrace.

Please don't take my word for it. Take the word of these Holocaust survivors who agree with me 100%.

Many sweeping issues, elegantly and eloquently stated in a very engaging way. So true, Virgil, the many complexities - symptoms and outcomes - that you have stated. There have always been many factions within Israel (and within the world of "Jews", however they/we define their/ourselves). The hate has never dissipated and its resurgence has been gaining strength over these last years.

Here is what I think -- opinion, not fact. Ari has been an ADL board member for quite some time (not sure if that is the case now) and is very sensitive to these issues. I think, plainly and simply, he just took a dive in the face of trying to be on the side of correctness, less the rantings of a constituent proved to have merit. Punto. Period.

Virgil Starkwell
Virgil Starkwell

I agree with your analysis. However, it is incumbent upon moderate Jews to stand up against those voices of extremism within their own community. Public officials like Porth must display courage and be willing to communicate to their constituents why extremists like Kaufman are actually harming the cause of Jews worldwide.

Bombayontherocks69
Bombayontherocks69

Pulp,There are quite a few moderate Muslim groups that feel the same. Kaufman is an idiot and a fear-monger, but that doesn't automatically make him wrong 100% of the time.

In addition, the American Muslim Congress, the Aafaq Foundation, the Center for Islamic Pluralism, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, and the International Quranic Center charged in a letter in 2008 that ISNA:

"has a long history of association with extremist trends in Islam. ISNA has served as a front group for Wahhabism, the official sect in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia; the jihadist ideologies originating in Pakistan with the writings of a certain Mawdudi and the Deoband schools in that country – the latter of which produced the Afghan Taliban, and the Ikhwan al-Muslimun, or Muslim Brotherhood."

They claimed that ISNA promate a radicalism that, regardless of ISNA's rhetorical claims, is basically hostile to Jews and suppresses the intellectual and social development of Muslims."[18]

Model Citizen
Model Citizen

Even if your point is factual it is not relevant. The Republican party has a long history of association with the Ku Klux Klan but that doesn't mean black leaders shouldn't speak to groups of them when invited to do so. On the contrary, talking to those we have differences with often eliminates the misunderstandings that divide us. Coexisting in a perpetual stalemate solves nothing. How many times have you heard stories about children engaging with those that they fear only to emerge as best friends for life?

Say what you want about the ISNA but they reached out and invited Porth to come speak to them. What a slap in the face that he didn't.
