There Are Too Many Naked People in Loxahatchee Groves

Cheers to you too, naked man!
SunSport Gardens has a problem -- there are too many naked people running around their community.

The problem isn't the fact that residents are nude -- it is in fact a nudist camp -- but that a Palm Beach County resolution says they have too many of them.

Apparently this resolution, passed in 1994, dictates land-use and zoning laws that allow only 48 trailers at the site. There are currently 133.

The Sun-Sentinel reported all of this yesterday to our amusement to then quote Mayor Dave Browning as saying he's "not inclined to shake things up at the camp site." Good, because shaking naked adults would be awkward.

Our favorite part, though, is how the Community Council plans to deal with the problem. It's going to hold an issues meeting on December 7. We just really hope some of the nudists attend.

They should just grandfather them since they've been around a LOT longer than the developers and newbies--and the law that imposed these restrictions.

I've been to Sunsport and it's a great getaway from what jokingly passes for civilization. It's truly like old Florida before paradise got paved over. Some trailers are close together, but the people living in them must not mind since they're the ones who put them there in the first place.

The only reason this story is getting any publicity at all is the potential for bad puns that all the so-called journalists are trying to make out of it. Oh, that and the extra search hits. Nothing to see here, keep moving.

That's not a Sun-Sentinel story. The byline clearly says "Mitra Malek/The Palm Beach Post."

Christiana,

I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. That line was not meant to imply that members of the nudist colony would attend the meeting in the nude. We are aware that their are certain guidelines for people who live the lifestyle.

That line was simply meant to imply that it's a little silly for the community to hold a meeting about the issue when even the Mayor said he's inclined not to mess with anyone at Sunsport.

Really, Devin? Do you really believe that nudists would attend a town council meeting in the nude? Did you do no research whatsoever?

Just to clear this up, nudists grocery shop, go to church, are involved in their local communities and, guess what. . . we wear our clothes when appropriate.

I am sure that representatives of Sunsport will be in attendance at the meeting. I can't help but feel that your snide comment was not a hope that we would take part in the politcal process, but a suggestion that we would actually show up naked.

Organized family social nudism has a rich history in this country dating back to the 1930's. The American Association of Nude Recreation has a wonderful archival library here in Florida- perhaps you might benefit from learning a bit about someone's culture before your make degrading assumptions.

However Sunsport resolves its issues with the newly incorporated town, there is never a need to falsly report or misrepresent in order to get a cheap laugh. There is plenty of humor in the world without resorting to bad journalism.

Better yet was the NBC Miami headline: "Nudist Colony May See Shrinkage."
