• it's not even remotely a Ponzi. everyone's benefits are based on their contributions. the only reason you aren't paid FROM your own contributions is that the first retirees didn't contribute their entire lives. The only way not to get your benefits is if politicians renege on the system (unlikely, and whenever they have tinkered with it, it's been delayed so that the soon-to-retire aren't affected at all, or if the world ends

• Ronnie Klein and his hero Alhaji Hussein Obama has already solved the Social Security problem when they together passed ObamaCare. You see, with all the changes this so-called medical care legislation made to Medicare, no seniors on Social Security will make past 70 when they need live saving medical treatment, thus making Social Security solvent once more. Boy! Those two are really great thinkers!

• @Steve Ellman: There are very simple ways to ensure that SS remains policy and that this generation's workers get *some* return on their investment. My point is that it's very unlikely that they'll enjoy the same program that today's seniors are getting. In 50 years, SS may still exist, if only because it's such a sacred political cow, but it'll be a different (and inferior) product by then. "Ponzi scheme" is a poor analogy to make, because a Ponzi is defined by a deliberate attempt to fool people who are investing voluntarily into a fund they hope will get them rich. SS is none of those things. But I'm giving West the benefit of the doubt here and assuming that he means that SS is an investment unlikely to bring handsome returns.

• Are you really sure of this? "...the unlikelihood that 20 and 30-something workers will receive return on their investments in the program" I believe there are economists who believe that rumors of SS's impending demise are greatly exaggerated.
