[UPDATED] Fort Lauderdale City Worker Fears Violence Between Building Department Staff, Alleges Cover-Up by Building Director

A great community service punishment for the entire code dept would be to spend a few weeks with the unpaid sea turtle rescue volunteers who are up all night because code enforcement won't do thier job... • Bolander encouraged the work place affair. Poor Alex, his wife listened to a pig. "OH Debbie" just think about the promotion you will get, after all, see how I got to the top !

• Just a reminder, the purpose of the building department is to review, evaluate and approve projects for construction. Does anyone actually perform this task or are they too self absorbed in their own personal affairs?!?!?!

• Almost the same thing goes on in my work place and the management covers it up reguarly.....

• The City having a "zero tolerance" workplace violence policy, this is what SHOULD take place. If any employee feels threated by what happened, and fears for their safety, this should be communicated to the City again. Mr. Hernandez, by the City's own policy, should already be on adminstrative paid leave until the investigation is concluded, and if necessary, displinary actions are taken. If he is NOT now on leave, employees have the right if they feel unsafe to file a complaint to that effect. The City MUST ACT on it's own polices. Sometimes an employee MUST force them to do so. The policy clearly supports any employee coming forward to ANY manager. Any manager MUST ACT. If in doubt, communicate with the City Manager's Office. Put a complaint in writing, with a copy to the acting city manager.

• They all will receive a slap on the wrist, the charges will be unfounded and it will be business as usual. Insubordination, threats, cover up & extramarital affair amongst department heads......this is our tax payers dollars at work! Shame on you all. I hope the rest of the employees of the building department will learn to live with the "lack" of consequences that will occur and not have to worry everyday about coming to work in fear for their safety.

• P.S. Reporters should ask the City of Fort Lauderdale about the "zero tolerance" work place violence policy. It is that policy that says any employee making a threat should be removed and placed immediately on paid administrative leave. ALL employees at one time (I'm assuming this still is the case) signed and acknowledged knowing and receiving a copy of the policy. It also states that complaints can be made to ANY manager. I just want everyone to know that the City does indeed have a work place policy, and being that it is also "zero tolerance" all the managers knowing about this incident should be investigated, and Mr. Hernandez if he isn't already, should be on paid adminstrative leave until the investigation is complete.

• From one who knows, this VIOLATES the City of Fort Lauderdale Work Place Policy. ALL workers involved in this, particularly Mr. Hernandez, should be placed on paid admistrative leave until this is resolved. Since the managers did not report this incident, they should all be placed on leave. It IS City policy to remove any employoee who makes such a threat against anyone in the work place. Managers SHOULD NOT BE COVERING THIS UP! The city had a shooting several years ago. I believe three employees were killed, and the shooter killed himself. One victim died several years later from his injuries. One escaped injury. After this incident, the City made a policy about workplace violence. I hope we will hear more about this in your column so that we know this is not being swept under rug as Mrs. Bohlander wanted.

• THE SADDEST THING IS FOLKS ACTING LIKE THEY DON'T SEE THE HEADLINES. WORKPLACE VIOLENCE IS REAL AND HAPPENS OFTEN. YOU'VE GOT A SITUATION WHERE MARITAL PROBLEMS ARE MIXED WITH EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIRS AND THE PRESSURES OF WORK ALL IN ONE PLACE AND THE DEPT HEAD DID NOT THINK THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM????!!! YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOMEONE'S HEAD. IF HE WAS TO THE POINT THAT HE LET THE WORDS COME OUT OF HIS MOUTH WHILE STILL AT WORK THEN THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE HE MEANT WHAT HE SAID. WHY WOULD A DEPT HEAD PUT OTHER EMPLOYEES IN DANGER BY LOOKING THE OTHER WAY. SUCH A GROSS EXAMPLE OF NEGLIGENCE AND IRRESPONSIBILITY. THEIR ACTIONS HAD IT BEEN AT THERE HOME OR SOME PLACE ELSE MAY HAVE BEEN THEIR BUSINESS BUT SINCE THEY BROUGHT IT TO THE WORKPLACE, THEY MADE IT EVERYONE'S BUSINESS WHO HAS TO WORK THERE AND SOMETHING SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE GOES HOME TO THEIR FAMILIES AT THE END OF THE DAY. DOES THE NAME MCCREE IN 1996 RING A BELL FOR FORT LAUDERDALE MANAGERS? THEY SHOULD DO A LITTLE RESEARCH AND REMEMBER HOW 4 CITY EMPLOYEES WERE GUNNED DOWN AT A CITY OFFICE BY A FORMER CO-WORKER WHO THEN KILLED HIMSELF. YOU WOULD THINK THIS CITY WOULD NOT NEED TO BE TOLD HOW SERIOUS THIS COULD BE.

• WTH? Is everyone related there? Too many family members, lovers, etc. in one place does not bode well for any organization. Sounds like the BCSD transportation dept.

• When the hell do these people have the time to do thier job protecting the public from poor construction instead of spending so much time stealing CDs, looking at porn or have extramarital affairs. No wonder it takes forever to get a permit from these yahoos. Nobody is doing thier job the we, the public, pay for!!!!!

• these public agency department heads are all the same...entrenched in their jobs after thirty years of feeding at the taxpayers teat, cover-up anything that may require them to start collecting that pension early, before the maximum benefit has been achieved in DROP.
