UPDATED: Castillo Answers the Question

castillo.jpg

Like the photo of him above, Pembroke Pines Commissioner Angelo Castillo isn't always so clear. It's not always easy to see what he's actually up to or who's propping him up from behind his nice suits. Never has his slippery quality been more obvious than in a video put up this morning by the Sun-Sentinel (specifically the wife of the Pulp). Here Castillo, who has restarted his campaign for Broward County Commission after quitting, shows that he's a true politician, namely that he dodges questions with the worst of them.

He simply refused to answer a simple campaign question about Judy Stern.

Watching Castillo hem and haw is sort of like watching an insect squirm under a pin. But we already knew he and Stern, the terrible-awful lobbyist-campaign consultant, was on Castillo like old man smell on Tamarac.

UPDATED: I spoke with Angelo Castillo just now and will do a post on the interview(s) soon, but he basically said he wished he'd just have answered the question about Stern. So I asked him again.

"[Stern] has been informally assisting us with media in the campaign," Castillo said. "She has not been paid in any way. She's been assisting [Castillo's wife, campaign manager, and former Stern employee] Lisa with media ideas. Such a brouhaha has been made over this, maybe I should have said that in the first place."

Better late than never.

See the video inside.

Another city commissioner who owes his career to lobbyists because he votes their way on their projects. He may make a good County Commissioner if they would remove all Commissioners from participating on Selection Committees when county projects go out to bid.

Sorry, Pulp, while Angelo may have bloviated and dissembled way too much here (certainly for my taste), the fact remains that he is wildly popular in his Pines district for a very good reason: he takes care of his constituents.

He is also not stupid. He knows the Judy Stern association is not a plus. But to say that Angelo is or will be Judy Stern's puppet is to not know Angelo. He is very much his own man.

Those who know him best will vote for him in spades. He's no hack, as you suggest, Pulp.

If Castillo is not stupid and knows that Judy Stern is not a plus than why does he keep her and why does he feel it is necassary to not acknowledge her role in his campaign. If he is truly his own man either have the cujones to admit that she is part of his team or cut her loose. I am sick and tired of the cabal of lobbyists like Stern who act like puppetmasters with these local politcos. If, as you say, Castillo is not a puppet than prove it by disassociating himself from Stern and others like her and publicly repudiate the toxic effect she and her ilk have had on the system. Until he does this Castillo is just another in a long line of lobbyists' lapdogs sitting on a dais.

Here's what he wrote in the bio on his campaign website:

"County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin's announcement that she will not seek re-election in 2010 was unexpected but understandable. Diana has been caring and supportive friend, I know this was not an easy decision for her to make. However, her concerns for her health and for her family's well being must and should come first. Wayoutwest says:

Maybe Gator is Castillo. He's just repeating comments from the interview. It was great to see Castillo squirming during the last two minutes of the interview.

Regarding Castillo's motives, he has two. $94 thousand per year for a commission seat on top of his $156 thousand at Broward House and political aspirations. After a term on the commission he will be gunning for Marty Kiar's seat in the state house. Later he will run for Lincoln Diaz-Ballart's current seat at the federal level.

From the time Castillo was elected in Pines, everyone knew that was just going to be a stepping stone for higher office. Now it’s time to move up. He knows he has taken care of his constituency in district 8. Patronage is a powerful thing.
He will be subject to the same issues as the current county commission since he never met a developer he didn’t like. Look at his voting record on land use and zone issues. He also voted for the city hall debacle that Pines is trying to unload as a white elephant. He is part of the reason Pembroke Pines looks like west Kendall and Pines Blvd is referred by many to Kendall Drive North. Castillo also led the effort for Pines to take over the area now known as Southwest Ranches. He saw it as a last cherry of new tax money for his Pines Empire. Later when Pines signed an inter-local agreement with Southwest Ranches, he made sure Pines reneged on the agreements and nothing agreed to has happened to this day.

It’s a wonder that Pembroke is one of the “newer” cities in Broward is its second largest city. You can thank Alex Fekete, Frank Ortis, and Angelo Castillo. Pembroke Pines was incorporated in 1960 when 98% of 425 voters cast “yes” votes. It was less than a square mile of property between Pembroke Road (south) and then Hollywood Boulevard (north) and SW 72 Avenue (west) and the Florida Turnpike (east). In August 1992, when Hurricane Andrew tore through the Homestead, many of the people with wrecked homes turned north to the new subdivisions being built in Pembroke Pines. This increase in population resulted in overcrowded schools and roads. Since that time, under the leadership of the three men, Pines has annex every possible square inch of available real estate and built it up as quickly as possible. There are no large lots left for development between the everglades and the Turnpike from Sheridan to Pembroke Rd.

Gee, I wonder what types of clients Stern will be lining up to pay for access? Oh, and Ronnie boy Bergeron and his hoe Ali are big supporters of Castillo. It won’t be long before you see a $1000 per plate dinner at Red Neck Acres out, there north on Rt. 27. You know who will probably be there: Ronnie-boy Bergeron or should we call him FWC bought and paid for commissioner Ronnie-boy Bergeron and Ali Waldman, James and Nancy Blosser, Ron Book, Elliot and Mindy Borkson, Rick and Rita Case, James and Jan R. Cummings, and Keith and Doreen Koenig, Norman Ostrau, Ron Book, Jack Osterholt, Barbara Miller, of course Judy Stern, James B. Pirtle, Bernie Friedman, Alan Koslow, Gary Poliakoff, Neil M. Schiller, Wally Dix, Bill Scherer, Steven A. Geller, Barbara A. Hall, Howard A. Kusnick, Russ and Stacy Klennet, Irene and Stuart Michelson, Jack N. Tobin, Neal R. Kalis, George Allen, William Rubin, Donald McClosky, Bowman Brown, Neil A. Sterling and the erst of the county commissioners. Did I miss anyone? All of Castillo’s new and paid for friends (oh, that was impolite), strike that, contributors, will be attendance compliment of the Judy Stern machine.

Does Broward really need another ultra pro-growth, pro-machine, commissioner? Haven’t we had enough!

Nice history lesson.

Too bad it's bullshit.

Pines tried to annex part of what is now Southwest Ranches back in 1996 and, as I'm sure you know, Southwest Ranches eventually reacted by voting to become a new city in 2000.

Castillo didn't even move to South Florida until 1996. He wasn't elected to the city commission until 2004. He worked for HUD prior between 1996 and 2004.

So he is not "part of the reason Pembroke Pines looks like west Kendall and Pines Blvd is referred by many to Kendall Drive North." That predates him. And it was not Castillo who "also led the effort for Pines to take over the area now known as Southwest Ranches." That predates even his arrival in South Florida.

Thus, except for the part about Pines you grabbed from Wikipedia, you obviously have no credibility whatsoever when it comes to assessing Angelo Castillo and Pembroke Pines.

I'm a big fan of Angelo's because I live in his district. So I know him.

Unlike you, and the rest who have imbibed the Pulp-Aid. (Sorry, Bob, most of the time I'm with you. Here, I'm absolutely not. Keep digging. You'll hit the truth eventually.)

Nice defense of your friend but your wrong.

1. Pines did not try to annex part of SWR, they wanted all, Cooper City wanted Sunshine Ranches and Davie wanted all. You have it backwards, the Southwest Ranches Civic Association, the umbrella group that formed SWR NEVER reached out to Pines. I met with Fakete, the police and fire chiefs, city attorney, and Charlie Dodge (who lives in SWR) along with Mecca Fink, Johnny Dollar, and a few other people involved with forming the Town to listen to their proposal and let them know definitively we were not interested in their overtures. We did everything to block their takeover including lobbying the Broward Country Legislative Delegation. BTW SWR was incorporated in 2000.

2. I did to mean to imply that Castillo was involved during the Hurricane Andrew timeframes, that situation set up the over development situation that started with Flannigan and continued with Fakete until build out during Castillo's reign. Sorry for the misunderstanding there.

3. Check his voting record and you will see that while in office he voted for all large developments of regional impact and the over development of what land remained undeveloped, during his tenure. Look at new development on both sides of I-75 at Pines Blvd. You cannot fit higher density commercial development unless you went vertical. And that’s probably next when the market picks back up.

More fiction? I think not!

You said it, “I'm a big fan of Angelo's because I live in his district.”, so by extension, you’re a fan of Crist, Diaz-Ballart, LeMieux, Nelson, Wasserman-Rubin, and Obama. You live in their districts too. Nice.

Someone commented on Castillo’s reason why he pulled out. HE was concerned that his job at Broward House would be a conflict of interest with his commission responsibilities. Their OPINION was it was not. They have been wrong many times before. He then decided at Stern’s prodding to reenter. It funny his political instincts took charge first, then his human instincts got involved, and his political instincts won out. Obviously he doesn’t subscribe to the political credo that if something has any perception of conflict steer clear. How can he, he has aspirations! We’ll be watching.

Oh and finally, if you’ve read my posts I am no Pulp sycophant. He’s on to something here. We don’t need anyone else who is trying to line their pocket at the public expense. Where do your fit into the Castillo campaign organization? Not saying or admitting? Just wondering.

Police sergeant suspended without pay for three days for misconduct, records show
By Paula McMahon, Sun Sentinel

7:26 PM EDT, July 15, 2010

A Fort Lauderdale police sergeant will be suspended without pay for three days for misconduct that included working as a bodyguard for convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein and his wife, Kim, city records show.

Sgt. Steven Greenlaw began to moonlight for the Rothsteins in April 2009 and soon began organizing rosters of officers to staff three city-approved off-duty details at Rothstein's Harbor Beach home, his now-defunct law firm and the Bova Prime restaurant on Las Olas Boulevard, according to an internal affairs investigation report obtained by the Sun Sentinel.

I wouldn't know Judy Stern if she walked into the room right now, but I do know Angelo Castillo, and although I have not alway agreed with his position on every issue, I have seen him vote against issues backed by powerful interests (lobbyists, even).

Gator did you ever stop to consider that more than one bidder will hire lobbyists for an award? just because someone does not vote for one lobbyist's client doesn't mean a thing... you dumbass. Is Castillo as dumb as you? And I think you may be lying about not knowing her.

Are you fucking kidding me? 3 days? That is a complete mockery of the system! That in and of itself is evidence Adderly is in on it. Greemlaw must know where FA's re: SR are at.

How they find him guilty and not fire him is fucking ridiculous! At least a demotion is in order. This is a guy who represents management to line troops. He should have the judgment to follow agency policy!

This is clearly a case of Us and Them and since the IA Capt was in on the detail it turned into a slap on the wrist.... So for however many thousand bucks he loses maybe a grand and they may just take 3 vacation days out of his time

The news comes down they open an IA on him. Greenlaw's Capt buddy head of IA says hey keep your mouth shut about what we higher ups knew. You're gonna get a day off and your girls case will get dropped.

He gets 3 days ... He has to say he's happy because on one of the days he was actually committing theft and "double dipping" so they retroactively take 10 hrs vacation.

This only happens when the Admin is protecting someone. I have seen this before.

Let Us All Now Puke says:

Allegations of misconduct against a second Fort Lauderdale police officer, Deanna Garcia-Lemieux, who helped organize the security jobs and worked on many of them, were dismissed. Both Greenlaw and Garcia-Lemieux were cleared of one of the most serious allegations against them — investigators determined they had no knowledge of Rothstein's criminal activity. Investigators said they found evidence that the two officers socialized with the Rothsteins just once when they had brunch with them and other people on the Rothsteins' yacht in April 2009.

Greenlaw told investigators that he began working off-duty details at Bova in December 2008, at the request of part owner Tony Bova, who he said was a family friend. In the spring of 2009, Greenlaw said he was dispatched to deal with a disturbance at the restaurant and met Rothstein and his bodyguard, Joe Alu, who Greenlaw knew from when he and Alu were Plantation police officers. Soon after that, Greenlaw began his work for the Rothsteins, he said.

Greenlaw said he thought he was just a driver and that Scott Rothstein told him that Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley had approved it. Adderley denied that and there was no evidence Greenlaw got formal approval, the investigators wrote.

Investigators rejected Greenlaw's insistence that he was just an occasional driver for the couple, noting that he was armed at all times. They referred to video shot at a Broward County Humane Society fundraiser in April 2009 that showed Greenlaw accompanied the Rothsteins inside. They also cited e-mails that confirmed Greenlaw filled in for Alu when the bodyguard was unable to work and that Greenlaw had applied for a law firm job he referred to as the "assistant position for Mrs. Rothstein."

For his part, Greenlaw told investigators in a sworn statement, "Every day since I've become a police officer, I've been armed."

Greenlaw should repay 10 hours of vacation leave to the city because of an "oversight" about whether he was off duty one day he worked for the Rothsteins, the investigators found.

Greenlaw and Garcia-Lemieux were placed on paid administrative leave in January. Garcia-Lemieux was reinstated to duty March 16. Greenlaw went back to work last week, and will serve his unpaid suspension in August.

Greenlaw's attorney, Mike Dutko said Thursday that Greenlaw is satisfied with the outcome of the investigation "given the extraordinary allegations that were made at the start."

"Steve Greenlaw is a very good and very proud police officer ... he's glad to have this ordeal behind him and without question, there were lessons learned," Dutko said.

So we announce that these officers have been severely punished.

Sgt Greenlaw received 3 days off without pay, however since he is vital to the running of the deparment he has been given 24 hours of Overtime .

Ofc Lemieux has been given a day at the spa with Dave Benjamin.

Dave Benjamin has too been given a day at the spa. Paid for by a bundle of loot that fell out of one of the duffle bags he was carrying.

When are we REALLY going to say enough! The news about that monster Narcy Novack just sent chills down my spine. That our ME signed off saying Ben's mother dying from multiple falls tells me Perper is a freak of gargantuan proportions (which he allegedly IS). Was there a payoff? He couldn't tell whether someone fell while unattended or if they were beaten to death in ways that said more than one person was involved. What about our police department and investigators on THAT one? Rocks through windows, men caught spying on her, trying to find the best time to murder her...it's too much even bear.

You've got corrupt, criminal lawyers not getting arrested, let alone being disbarred by the Florida Bar...off the hook, without punishment, to lie, cheat and steal from more people down the road. ?? How can we stand for this?

We have judges like Ana Gardiner causing taxpayers to pay for another trial, while she moves on to a high paying job in the private sector. Who would HIRE HER? It's crazy.

The BSO and FLPD investigate their own and find no wrong doing, nobody loses their job loss. WTF?! Judges on the take. SAO not prosecuting any of these disgusting people until outside enforcement comes in and shoves the corruption right up their ass?!

All the other secondary players in the Rothstein case who will never see a courthouse even though they profited for stolen money...

A D-list Anna Nicole Smith touches down in this town, which happens to be the spot she dies from a drug overdose, and a judge continues to make money off her dead body, years later, exploiting dead actresses, elderly neighbors...a Probate Judge, no less. Money, money, money. Everthing else aside, I guess.

Almost every commissioner on every commission has found a way to steal from the public. And our mayor doesn't even react or respond to this mayhem and crime.

Boy, is there an opportunity for someone to step up to the plate and lead us out of this cesspool.

Could it get any worse?!

I love the intellectual force of these arguments. But hey, it's Friday morning; I'll play along:

1) I doubt Castillo is as dumb as I am (I'll settle for a tie - with the two of us taking penalty kicks to settle the matter).

2) Perhaps because you view Judy Stern as the all-powerful empress of evil in Broward County, you can't imagine that everyone does not know her (to know her is to do her bidding!). I don't know her, and I suspect I'm only one of at least 1.65 million Broward residents who don't.

Piece of the puzzle; a French woman works here in Ft Lauderdale as a court reporter. They put her mom in my moms room at the nursing home. They took her moms oxygen away and she couldn't breathe so she flung herself on the floor struggling. When I visited my mom said they raped her mother in front of her. My mom has dementia so she could have made it up. Finally they gave the woman her oxygen back. The French woman removed her mom from the nursing home.

Remember the MO of this group is to get to an employee in each business not the owners.
In this case it was the staffing company.
It's all been changed since then. This happened 3 yrs ago.

Re: Updated

Appears that Angelo had time to consult with his media adviser, Stern, to formulate a "benign" campaign response. You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep. Stern, the Lee Atwater of So Fla politics, is a toxic hired gun always hired because of her willingness to initiate the slimiest campaign tactics. Despite solid credentials, the Castillo/Stern relationship reflects exceedingly poor judgment on his part. Just what we need on an already dysfunctional corrupt commission, more poor judgment.

I agree with Rev de Groot. A background check of Angelo's NY tenure s/b done. Why would anyone who supposedly worked for the administrations of Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani, leave to start up an office in the cultural wastelands of sofla?
