Your daily look at the headlines in South Florida:
  • A contractor working in Haiti was mistaken in reporting that three of the twelve Lynn University students who were there on a charitable mission had been found. So the number of missing students is back up to four, along with two members of the university faculty. [CBS4]
  • A computer programmer from Boca Raton has been flying doctors and nurses to Haiti via his private plane, while flying victims back into South Florida hospitals. [WSVN-7]
  • Local school districts are preparing for an influx of Haitian students. I guess the poor planning and corruption in the Broward County School District that led to over-building may prove serendipitous, at least in this instance. [Miami Herald]
  • Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein wrote a stinging letter to his counterpart, Broward State Attorney Michael Satz, accusing prosecutors of not sharing evidence favorable to defendants and of covering up for bad cops. [Sun-Sentinel]
  • The Palm Beach County School District continued its retreat from a controversial, test-based academic improvement policy championed by its chief academic officer, Jay Hernandez, who was stripped of some of his power last month, after pressure from parents. Three of the supervisors Hernandez had recruited for that campaign will be resigning at month's end. [Palm Beach Post]
  • Palm Beach County Steven Abrams is among the 35 former senior attorneys at Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler under investigation by the Florida Bar, which has received reports that the firm's members lied about how much money was in the trust fund and that they stole money from it. [Palm Beach Post]
