The catastrophe in Haiti dominates the headlines in South Florida and around the world:
  • The Port Au Prince airport is now taking chartered flights and aid has arrived -- just nearly enough to meet the dire need for water and fuel. [New York Times]
  • Lynn University in Boca Raton learned late last night that at least seven students who were on a mission in Haiti when the quake struck are safe. They believe those students are with five others from the university who were on the trip, though it's uncertain. [Sun-Sentinel]
  • South Florida Haitians gathered for church services at Notre-Dame D'Haiti in Miami yesterday to pray for the safety of family members on the island. [WSVN-7]
  • Incredibly, the Florida Public Service Commission turned down a request by Florida Power & Light to get a 30 percent rate increase. This after the utility spent $6 million in its lobbying campaign. [Miami Herald]
  • As if there weren't already enough controversy over curriculum in the Palm Beach County School District, now parents are furious about faulty heating systems that forced students to endure frigid classrooms. [Palm Beach Post]
  • An Everglades snake hunt has turned up evidence that Africa's rock python is making itself a South Florida home. If it breeds with the Burmese python, say wildlife experts, it could create the kind of "super snake" known to eat goats, crocodiles and even children. [Sun-Sentinel]
