World Salsa Championships Heat Up Chilly South Florida

Categories: Broward, The Arts

That's Cristian Oviedo and Liz Lira, who traveled from their home in Los Angeles to Dania Beach this weekend, where they were named the Salsa Champions of the World.

The event, previously held in L.A. and at Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, was canceled in 2008 due to the economy. This year, the Sheraton Hotel on Griffin Road played host. Salsa dancers from some 40 countries competed; yet somehow, not a single couple from South Florida placed in the top 10 in any of the event's four divisions. Seriously, there are salsa dancers in Japan who are better than the ones in South Florida?
