Michael Brewer: In good spirits
Dozens of fans on Deerfield Beach boy Michael Brewer's Facebook page were thrilled to see the new photo his mother posted on Friday, showing Michael looking in good spirits and evidently healing well. Wrote one Facebook friend from Colorado:

"I am totally jazzed to see you looking so good! Keep up the good work. Few of us have any idea what you are going through, but all of us have known bad times, and it is great to see you getting better."

Brewer was burned over 60 percent of his body when nine boys surrounded him on October 12 and lit him on fire in a dispute over a $40 videogame. Although three of the boys -- Mathew Bent, Denver Jarvis, and Jesus Mendez -- are scheduled to be tried as adults on charges of attempted murder, 142 locals have added their signatures to letters received by the State Attorney's office on Friday asking that the three be tried as juveniles instead.

Brewer's Facebook page, Pray for Michael Brewer, has attracted more than 7,000 friends, most of whom have never met the boy but all of whom are beaming good vibes in his direction over the net. Writes another fan, from Spartanburg, South Carolina:

Mikey, you're gonna think I'm crazy but I got both your pictures printed out and posted on my workstation at the office. When I pray for someone in person, I like to touch them on the top of the hand or on the shoulder. Since I can't do that, I like to touch your picture - its not necessary but it makes me feel like I'm touching you.

Debate over how the juvenile perpetrators should be tried has sparked fierce contention. Eleven hundred people signed an online petition demanding that the kids be tried as adults. And Denver Jarvis' mother has appeared on the Today show with her younger son, Jeremy, pleading for clemency for Denver. "There's two sides to every story," Mrs. Jarvis told Today. "My children are not the monsters they've been painted out to be."

You got to be joking! This Quran burning event is a total calamity towards the American people. Did that pastor already forget the Golden Rule? Treat other people as you would want to be treated! There will definitely be an international protest against this asinine event. Just see for yourself.

Mikey is doing great with his healing, and I credit much of his miraculous recovery to the many loving prayers he has been receiving, along with his incredibly strong spirit, and the excellent medical treatment he's getting. But my concerns are now that he's out of the hospital, and everyone see that he's doing better, many people may think he no longer needs our love and prayers of support. Michael Brewer is still suffering great pain, both physical and emotional, and he needs our love as much now as ever before. PLEASE, don't stop praying for him on a daily basis. PLEASE continue to write to him, and encourage his heroic struggles to become whole and happy once again, without the terrible pain, and without the fear and nightmares. I beg everyone to keep your love for Mikey as strong and bright as ever. You may use this link to my webpage to help follow his progress and gather more info: http://community-2.webtv.net/t... Thanks to everyone who has opened their hearts to this couragous boy, and I pray that you will continue to do so long after the news has stopped following his story. May your love for Mikey be returned to you with more love.Gary

David S you're kidding, right? How about if my 15 year old comes over and sets you on fire and we see how you feel about that. They definitely should be thrown to the wolves. 30 years is not enough time. They deserve to be in jail for the rest of their lives. After all, Michael has to live with the pain and then scars for the rest of his life. When you see people with scars like that all over their body, don't you stare even when you don't want to? Can you imagine how he's going to feel when he finally can even think about things like swimming or being with a woman? My nephew started down the wrong road at 14 and was given lots of chances of rehab. He knew what he was doing, but chose anyway. Just like my 15 and 16 year olds know what they are doing - and they sometimes choose right, sometimes choose wrong. But they know what they are choosing. don't kid yourself. Kids grow up a LOT faster than we did. They meant to hurt and hurt good. They meant to give Michael something he'd never forget. I don't think they expected him to live through it. And rest assured there are days that Michael wishes he hadn't. And people that say he looks good -- what? Did you see those open wounds all over his body? That isn't fingerpaint on his skin or some kind of medicine, that is the skin. I don't THINK I'm better than these particular OTHER GUYS, I KNOW I am. I would never dream of doing such a thing to my worst enemy. Ever.

I completely agree with the comment made by "lets calm down". While it was horrific that these boys committed such an act; history has proven over and over that punishment does not rehabilitate! Should there be concequences? Yes but lets we as a society have the responsiblity to help these boys, to give them a chance to help themselves. Branding them criminals for a criminal act wont help Michael. What it will do is mark them for life and give them a reason to never change. There are alternatives to branding these boys and throwing them to the wolves. It's always easy to throw stones because it give us all a reason to think that we're better than the other guy. Forgivness, mercy and innovative ways of guiding these boys in a positive direction is the responsible thing to do.

JaicytheBaker

The boys who decided to make a barbecue out of Mike should be TRIED AS ADULTS. This crime is too horrific to be treated any other way. They were sufficiently old enough to know the consequences of their acts. Being a nurse to burn victims I can attest to the physical and mental pain they suffer. The perpetrators were animals and regardless of their ages deserved to be treated like the animals they are. They intended to kill in a horribly painful way, not in self defense but over a video game. A dog that attacked any human (let alone a child) with such ferocity would be put down. Just keeping the death penalty off the table is more consideration then they deserve. If Mike's scars looked worse or he died, there would be no pleas for leniency. Don't wuss out people and ask for leniency. The next kid burned alive might be yours or a relative. Use your common sense and send a message. We don't want these animals on the streets.

Lets all calm down...
Lets all calm down...

Lets all calm down. Wishing Michael Brewer well is a good thing to do and commentors should focus on that and not on spewing hate and rage and vengeance at the children who did this. Yes - the children. Maybe if we all spent a little less time hating and being angry and getting even stuff like this wouldn't happen. Anyone who thinks 15-year-olds are adults hasn't spent time with one. There is a reason we have the phrase "charge as an adult" - it means we are acknowledging that these individuals are not, in fact, adults. We should look to ourselves, to our society, for the cause of this. To a society that values possessions and glorifies violence and revenge. And anyone who thinks that's wishywashy or weak, well, that's your right - but maybe you should ask yourself how it would feel if it was your child, not in the hospital, but on the shackled and dressed in orange and the entire world not only thought he was a monster, but looked at you as his creator.Even if you don't agree with that, to say horrible things to or about the mothers of the offenders is just low. And, worse, to call yourself a Christian and then parse the semantics of his teachings about forgiveness so that you don't have to actually forgive when it is most called for is lame and hypocritical. Forgiveness is most needed when it is the hardest to give and is as much about healing the one doing the forgiving. It's not "Turn the other cheek - unless what the person did is really, really bad." And having said all that, if Michael were my brother or son - I'd want to kill those boys with my own hands! But that's love, emotion. Lady justice wears a blindfold for a reason. That's why it is up to us, the rest of society, who are supposed to be more objective, to decide justice. That's the reason we don't just hand criminals over to their victims or their victims loved ones. Vengeance and justice are NOT the same things. Justice is always tempered with mercy. This is a horrible tragedy for EVERYone involved. I am so glad that Michael is recovering. I wish him and his family well. And I hope that everyone involved is able to heal and grow and change.

First of all, no one is seriously suggesting vigilante style justice (which I would agree is no justice at all). On the other hand, you can't simply say "Justice is always tempered with mercy" and make it so. I prefer a definition of justice that includes less mercy and more "you get what you deserve." You think there's too much hypocrisy because people only want to turn the other cheek when it's easy to do so. I think there's too much hand wringing and too many wrongdoers getting off scot free because we're afraid to say what's really in our hearts, not what Jesus tells us to say. That doesn't make me an animal or a monster. It will make you and us all safer, though. And for that you should show some Christian understanding and gratefulness.

Mrs. Jarvis told Today. "My children are not the monsters they've been painted out to be."

OK Lady... so what kind of monsters are they? Because they certainly are not human beings. And YOU are responsible for turning them loose on the world. Shame...

Jesus commands us to forgive those who have wronged us who repent and ask for forgiveness in order to restore the relationship on the basis that He has forgiven us by paying the penalty for our sins on the cross. That, to me, is not a get out of jail free card to offenders. For example, if you and I are best friends and you hurt me deeply in some way and you feel terrible about it and seek to restore a relationship with me, then I have to decide if I want to restore that relationship based on the genuineness of your repentence and the fact that I have also been forgiven of my offenses. That is the context in which Jesus tells us to forgive. That has nothing to do with Mikey's situation and he is under no obligation to forgive or pardon them for their unrepentant acts.

If people know how to light a match and rub someone with alcohol they also know that they will cause this person to burn. Bobby, how can you say 'they certainly didn't know what they were doing' when it is so obvious. They certainly thought they wouldn't get into big trouble, since they aren't 18 yet and haven't ever been in trouble for anything they did before. They have records. Besides, let Michel choose weather he wants to forgive these people or not. I know I wouldn't. I think you're expecting a bit too much there.

Einpoe
Einpoe

Yeah, who is this "Bobby"? The perpetrators "didn't know what they were doing"? That's a good one! And who is he to tell Michael to forgive because, heck, he'll "get better in time and get over it" while these poor, misunderstood perpetrators, "every time they close their eyes, they'll see what they've done and be traumatized by it"? (paraphrased). The only part of your post that makes any sense is your suggestion that Michael consider whether and when he might be able to forgive these monsters for what they've done because, in the long run, such a forgiving spirit is probably in his own best interests. But you don't even hedge this suggestion with any understanding, as I've tried to do. You flat out tell him what to do: " Forgive them for your own sake" That's not for anyone else to decide but Michael himself.

What an unbearable mockery would it be to the victim, if these criminals got away with such a crime. If they get away with it the justice system should eliminate the word "justice", because it wouldn't be deserved.

Betty
Betty

These people are dangerous and should be kept away from society. At 15 people aren't toddlers, so we shouldn't treat them as if they were. They commited the worst crime imaginable and deserve to be punished for it, regardless of their age. They are old enough to know what they are doing. They are nearly adults. I can't believe we even have to talk about this. If they were only 3 years older nobody would dicuss this. Mrs. Jarvis says her son is so young .....etc. Well, so is Michael Brewer...and if someone like her son is willing to recklessly risk someone elses life and torture him in such an unbelievably horrible way I don't think he deserves any better treatment than his victim. Also other criminals need to know that there are limits to their actions, no matter how old they are. If these people get away with this it would be a terrible, threatening message to society. Criminals can do whatever they want and don't have to expect anything!

How could anyone support the three creatures who set Michael on fire being tried as juveniles? That means they will be set free among us again very soon. They had criminal records before this attempt at murder and they will commit crimes again. They knew the boy would be burned and they did it anyway. Put them in prison for a good long time.

Hello Michael, I am a recovered burn victim as well..Healing must be from within you first before there can be a healing on the outside~You will have to find it within yourself to forgive those who did this to you~I know that probably sounds crazy but not hald as much as what they did~They certainly didn't know what they were doing and the end result of of their actions will change their lives forever~You will get better in time and will get over it~They will never forgey what they did to you and will see it and re-live it every time they close their eyes~Forgive them for your own sake~ You are in my thoughts~ Bobby Whitlock
