Morning Juice: Dirty Commissioner to Enter Plea; Drug House Raided in Wellington

Happy Turkey Eve. Let's see what's cooking in South Florida:
  • Remember that other big FBI case? Former Broward County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion appears prepared to enter a guilty plea today to one charge of money-laundering conspiracy after being accused of assisting undercover agents launder what they said was dirty money. [Miami Herald]
  • Horses ain't the only thing in Wellington. The bucolic equestrian community is also home to a major cocaine ring, judging by the nearly 15 kilos of cocaine that federal narcotics agents seized yesterday from behind a false wall in a home on Meadowbend Drive. [Palm Beach Post]
  • The Scott Rothstein case continues its tractor beam-like pull on the Broward Sheriff's Office. Bob Norman reports that Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti's executive officer, Lt. David Benjamin, received a payment of $30,000 from Rothstein for Benjamin's consulting business, which is currently under BSO investigation. [Daily Pulp]
  • Daily Pulp reported Sunday that Fort Lauderdale businessman George Levin was  Rothstein's whale, and in today's Sun-Sentinel that picture a bit clearer: Levin's hedge funds paid $657 million for what he thought was over a billion in settlements. Though the fund received some $531 million in March, it seems that over $100 million in remaining investments, plus whatever additional investment money Levin directed toward Rothstein since March, went up in smoke. [Sun-Sentinel]
  • A 13-year-old friend of Michael Brewer, who was present when a group of boys torched Brewer last month, read a statement to the press in which he claimed that the attack was not planned. That boy, Jeremy Jarvis, has not been charged and is said to have not participated in the attack. [Sun-Sentinel]
  • A happy ending to that freeway chase that we were all watching yesterday afternoon. The dude in the white Mazda, which reached speeds of 130 mph, glanced off a pickup truck, then the freewall barrier before crawling to the shoulder of the road. He's supposed to be part of a federal drug investigation based in Miami. [WSVN]
