Las Olas Lifestyle Magazine's Final Scotty Cover?
![]() |
[Update: The feds left the Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler law firm a bit after 5 a.m. after arriving about 6 p.m. They took voluminous records and left an inventory, though that is being kept confidential. The FBI and IRS did their work at night so as not to totally disrupt the law firm's work.]
We all know the society magazines are leeches for the rich and politically connected, but some of the local fluff coverage of Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein was just miserable.
The Palm Beach Post's Michael Bender found a particularly heinous piece about Rothstein that was published in Las Olas Lifestyle magazine in 2007, titled, and you can't make this up: "Scott Rothstein: A Compassionate Heart." Las Olas Lifestyle's motto, mind you, is "We Not Only Go to Million Dollar Homes, Our Readers Spend Millions!"
Here's a passage:
Politics is another in Rothstein's never ending streams of passions. And, he focuses much of his attention on assisting those who help children in need. Rothstein believes every child should have the opportunity to live a better quality of life, regardless of their environment and elected officials need to create this opportunity.
"Governor Charlie Crist, is the perfect example. I started supporting him when he was running for Attorney General. I studied his principles. I met with him for hours, and decided this guy is the key to true change. He won the election and truly made a difference. He called upon me again when he decided to run for Governor and I supported him with every ounce of my being. This is a person of pure unadulterated passion and integrity. His approval rating is through the roof because he does what he believes in his heart is right and doesn't play games along party lines or with peoples lives. He is the peoples Governor, plain and simple. And, some day I am certain he will be the people's President."
Click here to see the spread, including the cover and a great pic of Rothstein with wife Kim along with another of Rothstein beaming with Crist and former U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez.

What an obvious photoshopped pic of Rothstein ... 'cuz the real Scotty Rothstein would wear guido suits so much gaudier and uglier than this purple suit. At least add some wide and loud cross-hatched stripes and weird shirt collars and you'll be closer to the real Rothstein tackiness!! What a nouveau riche poseur!! I wonder how he is going to look in "prison orange"? I don't think the color flatters him.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 9:07AMHad never read your blog or knew anything about you Pulp....but I have gained a serious addiction to your blog since you started covering the SR ordeal - looking forward to all the new material today.
Fantastic work.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 9:08AMGuido suits???? SR had a horrible sense of style leave fine Italian suit makers out of your prejudicial remarks. We need more bigots in this world like you need another hole in your head. And as far as pulp doing a great job.... Well if he followed all aspects of this story with the same zealousness as he did maligning SR for so many months I might agree. Yes SR seems to be the jerk you have said he was, but this is still America, innocent till proven guilty in a court of law.
Pulp you seem to be leaving out so many details just to spread innuendo and conjecture. There is no investigative reporting going on here, no digging for facts; just barely reporting what is common knowledge on the street. What about Russel Addler, what rock has he crawled under during this whole mess??? Was he involved??
What is to become of all the other employees of SR investments? Where do they stand? I still haven't heard of any indictments being handed down and we are a week into this mess. Oh ya pulp your all over this story… Blow hard!
I still wonder whether RRA's firm trust account (clients' $$) was compromised. Isn't each attorney who puts their client's money into the trust account responsible for it? If any of the so-called "innocent" attorneys were not overlooking that account (which they should have been doing), would they not be just as culpable for any shortages? I realize this will take a long time to wash out, but the initial stories that came out said the firm's trust/clients' funds were not at issue. Just wanted clarification.
Also, Pulp, do you and your wife collaborate with your stories and share info, or do you work separately? Just curious, I imagine it would make your household amusing and lively at times like these.
ask von allman what his connection to jim was all about?stephens came upon ft laud just like rothstein, w/ a very verifiable checkered past in the bond business.as in, lost his license.from nyc. fancy cars, big yachts, flashy home{ foreclosed on} and an unfortunate questionable young death.and von allmen held his memorial at his house, a house that people wonder if it is a marriage or a charade.the guy has money, but people don't shrug their shoulders at losing 75 million bucks.they just don't.just start connecting the dots, and where is mike satz???? how many young black men came to court today on a cold ass bus at 4 am on drug charges and got sent up the road?????? while the real crooks woke up to fresh oj, eggs benny on 400 count egyptian sheets?come on satz, marcus, cohen, esp you morton, judges, seiler, chain gang charlie, is it not time to do the next right thing?????
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 9:56AMPulp - Spaghetti makes a good point. This is a small story you broke and unless you are going to play tape recorded meeting minutes between the Feds and SR I would move on...all SR has done up until now is take a vacation to Casablanca...definitely not noteworthy.

Subject: Fwd: Rothstein: Had Godya
Had Gadya ("One Kid") is the last of the songs sung at the conclusion of the Jewish seder and tells the story of the little goat bought by father for the mere pittance of “ two zuzim.”
The following shows a depiction of the song for our dear, fallen friend- Scott Rothstein.
Scott Rothstein-
One kid that became a Felon.
But first came the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came the Politicans and shared the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a felon
Then came the Charities that slept with the Politicians and shared the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came McCain/Crist that used the Charities that slept with the Politicians and shared the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came the Investors that supported McCain/Crist that used the Charities that slept with the Politicians and shared the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came the Excess thanks to the Investors that supported McCain/Crist that used the Charities that slept with the Politicians and shared the Limelight and that ate the kid fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came the Questions that spurred the Jewish Avenger that had to explain the Excess thanks to the Investors that supported McCain/Crist that used the Charities that slept with the Politicians and shared the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Then came the G5 to flee the country, that spawned a man hunt, that revealed the fraud that validated the Questions that spurred the Jewish Avenger that had to explain the Excess that came from the Investors that supported McCain/Crist that used the Charities that slept with the Politicians and shared the Limelight and fueled the Greed that ate the kid that is now a Felon
Had Godya, Had Godya!

Broward is a bed of Crooks asks about Stephens;
Jim Stephens was a crook and was in the bond business in New York. In the 70's he pulled a scam like we have been seeing lately and got away with quite a bit of the $$$$.
He was not prosecuted because back then the Feds did not take action on this type of scam but the SEC did.
He did what any self respecting crook would do! He moved to Broward County and joined Sheriff Nick Navarro's Broward Sheriffs Advisory Council.
He then started dating an attorney in town and he alledged she beat him up (what a pussy he was). Restraining orders stared to fly and court hearings started.
Well Jim was running out of money and it was to much. They found him smoking the carbon monoxide out of the tail pipe of his car. He went to meet his maker and the legacy of Jim Stephens was over.
Don't shoot me I'm only the piano player.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 10:23AMI love you Paino Player!!!!
Tell us more about where scotty is hanging out? What about Kip Hunter is she dirty too? She was on his payroll and she is a bitch to work with! She quit Levinsons for her own start up - was that funded by Scott?

i know , and now i want to know why a "wealthy venture capital" guy like this von allmen had his memorial service at his mansion?? is it birds of a feather?? jim was not an unlikeable guy, he was just a con man like so many in ft laud.to think of a guy lying under a tail pipe, which i knew of a long time ago, in a warehouse of cars b/c he was out of money, never had found love, children, thought cheap arm candy at the yacht club was important is really sad.but as this day starts, it continues on w/ the likes of judge tobin worrying about either corrupt or worse yet, stupid lawyers, ex judges, sherrif saying they had NO IDEA what was going on.by the way, is lil petey dijols serving plantains in mole sauce yet???? do they sing happy happy birthday at puerto rican reataurants? petey would look marvelous w/ an apron and a sombrero.how would sgt. shultz say " i knew nothing" in spanish??FORE!!!!!!
Getting pinched by the Feds has done Rothstein a world of good.
Looks like he shed 75 pounds...

I received the November issue of the esteemed Las Olas magazine yesterday. On page 2 is an add for Scotty's law firm, with the tagline "Passion, Integrity, Commitment", with 9 of the fat-faced attorneys standing in their lobby staring at the camera with stern sinister faces. I nearly pissed myself laughing.
Yes Kim has been a laughable know-nothing since her days with the old BASS tickets company. Yes her company was funded by SR. Had no real clients of her own. Was barely qualified to be on the fringe of the PR business. She wasn't necessarily dirty, just another of those loser nothings that SR hired who wouldn't ask too many questions and would just do whatever he said.
Like many of the lawyers at the firm, she too was not what anyone would call a 'producer' or a success, which of course added to the usual questions: Who ARE these folks, how are they possibly here in this Las Olas tower and how on earth are all these generally unaccomplished people making all this money?
Bob:
Keep up the good work. Rothstein is a huge scum bag as are those with whom he associated, Kim, his partners, etc. They ALL need to go down. Dont stop 'til the jail door slams. Book em Danno!
Proving Fort Lauderdale's arbiters of Psuedo Society will eat their wounded, check out Gold Coast magazine publisher Bernie McCormack's blog in which he feasts on Rothstein's still-warm corpse ... three months after naming the Jewish Avenger Number 25 among "Broward's 50 Most Powerful People."
And to think Scott's the Emerald Society's current Honorary Irishman of the Year.
check out the lifestyle website. looks like all of SR's buddies.

Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 11:26AMTotally disagree this story is anything less than huge. You apologists WISH the only journalists with chops in this town would move on -- but make no mistake this is a huge story and the surface has just been scratched. Those of us who have suffered through the ludicrous publicity SR and his ilk attracted are ready for the truth to come out. For a great laugh this morning, I looked at the August/September issue City and Shore which is a veritable tribute to these poseurs -- the Epsteins, Levinsons, Rothsteins being the most egregious offenders -- but the Levins and some of the other names that are floating up (the Von Allemans --sp?) are conspicuously mugging along right along with them Fort Lauderdale "society" -- what an oxymoron. Please keep up the story and you piano player types who know where the bodies are buried (so to speak) are doing a fine civic service that is much appreciated by the law-abiding.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 11:36AMOh yea Kip! Don't think she's dirty, just like "I love piano player" said - a bitch!! And a bully, rude to anyone she thought was beneath her. Acting like she was hot shit when yea she's crap in the PR world. What was her tactic? Oh yea buy ads to force fluff pieces. Brilliant.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 11:40AMoh and i think that piece in Lifestyle was trying to be cute with all the heart metaphors because the first part is about his involvement with the heart association.

Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 12:22PMThe biggest payoff in the p-r business very rarely earns enough for luxury office space and a staff. Kip Hunter being on Las olas never made sense to anyone in pr and marketing. All she was doing was moving stolen money into publications with staffs apparently so brain dead and desperate they bought her whole stupid act. She has no track record or clients.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 12:26PMShouldnt crimes like this be punished by immediate death? It would provide a terrific deterrent.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 12:36PM@ interested
You mean publishing the crap found in society rags? Yes, it should be.
@ ludicrous
Kip's office is down the hall from RRA and shares space with the sports management agency. As for her clients - Scott and Levinsons. That's it. Wish 2 measly clients got me such luxury and power!
And wait - what about Scott's vodka company?? Are we to lose such FINE liquor too?
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 12:51PMDONT FORGET SCOTT ROTHSTEIN HAS AND HAD A BIG HEART. HE WAS A GIVER AND IS A GIVER. LETS NOT PUT HIM IN JAIL .....UNTIL HE IS PROVEN GUILTY...........REMEMBER THE LAW

Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 1:16PMScott bought two cars from me at Lauderdale Imports BMW in Fort Lauderdale,a BMW Alpina B7 for his wife Kim and a 3 series for someone else,he was a noce guy and I admired him as a business man..however I had an bike accident and looked for his advicde and he recomended me to Addler (one of his partners) the case was not handed properly and now they got 10K from the Ins company that paid for my case.. Is a shame,I saw a guy thet knows him well trashing him on a public place and I sent a text to Scott and told him to be careful..'cause people on the street had a bad taste on their mouth about him ... and I guess the guy was right.. I'm sorry for him..
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 1:24PMSociety rags have always been a breed unto themselves, but at the least they served a purpose and showed the luxury world for what it was. In the last few years the way this creep took these rags over and the way they let him was a major embarrassment for this city.
Some of these total rags like las olas magazine were always a joke, but city and shore had no excuse. It was decent a long time ago. I was surprised that the sunsentinel allowed all those RRA ads in city and shore. It made them look like such amatuers.
To apr:
It's easy to have a "big heart" and be a great benefactor with other people's money. All that money did not come solely from doing fraudulent investments ... it's coming from other sources, and I suspect SR feels he will be safer in an American prison than he will as a fugitive outside the US. Why else have the police protection and body guards???

Las Olas Magazine has ceased publication. Is that news?
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 1:46PMDoes anyone know what happened to Anthony McDermmott?
Reily McDermotts was my favorite restaurant for the short time it existed. It was so good food wise that I was hoping Mr. McDermott would resurface with another restaurant.
Thought is was strange that such a successful establishment sold out so quickly. At the time I thought is was just a business decision however, based on current events including Mike Jackson selling out to BOVA I'm wondering if there is not more to this story.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 1:51PMWho cares about the magazine covers? Tell us more about what the FBI found during the search last night, Pulp. The Sentinel and Herald have stories. And why did Adler hire a criminal defense attorney?
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 2:16PMAnybody heard from stacie weisman lately? I would really like to see more gems like her post on Sunday.
Dear All,
Guess the fins/jets game wasn't enough to keep you busy today. Let's address a few facts. First Kim is not with Scott because they had committed to a charity event at their house on Thursday. Second, Kim spent the day at Town Center with me helping me pick out clothes for my friends daughter who happens to be a single dad and thinks Juicy Couture is too girlie. Then last night we had dinner at Capitol Grill, definitly the behavior of a woman who's husband has left her. Thirdly, Les Stryker was probably out looking for a birthday present for his wife, not a job since he has one.
The last time I checked, a business trip did not mean life it meant a business trip and as for Morocco, the food is quite good for all of you making religion comments you know how important that is to us.
Come see Scott on Tueday it will be a circus and maybe he can guess your weight.
Stacie

Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 2:33PM@ broward is a bed of crooks:
@ Don't shoot me I'm only the piano player:
I didn't know Jim Stephens had died - a suicide, no less. (more details, please!) I did some interior design work for him on his Fiesta Way home (Las Olas Isles) back in the late 1970's/early 1980's, when he was still commuting from NYC every weekend to play in Ft. Lauderdale.
Huge ego, a complete paranoid and a bully (sounds like Rothstein and their ilk). If you stood up to him he backed off (typical bully). He assumed everyone was out to steal from him, because that's who he was (till the SEC shut down his NYC boiler room operation). I didn't keep up with him over the years (by choice) - But I never realized he was unbalanced enough to take his own life. What a loser.
OK, what's the Levinson connection?

I'm sure HUtchings mouthpiece atty David Simmons will cover up the crap like he did for Lou Pearlman before Hutchings. Simmons is a candidate for state Senate I'm voting NO
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 4:40PMCurious...McDermott, from what I heard through the grape vine is back in Boston, he got strung out real bad on meth or heroine, one or the other, but he lost the resteraunt, which is when Bova was opened when his addicition kicked his ass. i used to see that man all the time and thought he was a very beautiful man, but then with some time, he started to looked "worn" you can tell something was up and it had to do with drugs.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 4:44PMGoobergirl . . thank you so much for the update . . . how unfortunate . . . he really had a good thing going with that restaurant . .. hopefully he will recover . . he seemed like a nice man.
Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 5:32PMWhere's stacie
So let me get this right while kimmy's money supplier was being grilled by the FEDS she was out shopping for a single Dad HMMMMMMMM .So she sooooo concerned that her hubby was still being questioned for some 16 -18 hours she felt a little shopping spree would help. Nice caring concerned wife .Maybe she needed to get in one last shopping spree before all her credit cards are cut off or spend the last of her cash. Not surprised one bit she only cared about $$$$ and now that she is broke and a joke she needs to find another sugar daddy. You sound as stupid as she is.
If this video doesnt say it all the rare and elusive Dirty Debra Villegas admits they are together 24 - 7. Melissa died because she knew to much and the Plantation Police Dept. better start working on this case!

Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 5 2009 @ 11:20PMRemember when Scott was a nobody attorney in a little office out in Plantation??? Not that long ago.
I always thought his leap to the wealthy side of town had something to do with his buddies at the Plantation Police Department. It seemed to happen overnight.
What exactly was the deal between them?
I've never seen police so smitten with an attorney.
There's some talk about one partner buying heroin with clients money...is this true????
Oh Boy! How fast can we get these dudes in jail...Their clients must be be furious over RRA fees, fees, FEES. The dirty bottomfeeders.
Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 2:36PMCurious, try to get it together. McDermott was way over his head, thinking he could make a go of it with a high end restaurant with no experience in the biz. He lost his shirt and left a lot of angry people in the process.
And its Jack Jackson who joined the Bova Group. Mike Jackson is the Auto Nation CEO. Jackson's was an antiquated concept anyway. It will be interesting if Bova Group can survive without Rothstein pumping his funny money into it, and if they go forward with their plans.
Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 3:42PMArnie . . my bad - Jack Jackson is exactly whom I meant(my appologies to Mr. MIKE Jackson).
I do have to say that as a food/service snob I personally found Rielly McDermotts to be excellent . . . we entertained large parties there numerous times and as we do not consider ourselves to be part of the Ft. Lauderdale elite we were affored top notch accommodation every single time regardless. . therefore it comes as a surprise to me first of all that this was Mr. McDermotts first large scale venture and second that he got in over his head.
Thank you for the explanation . . I have been so confused as to how this establishment disappeared so quickly . . . sounds like you know that there is more to the story...hopefully you will share.
Write back soon!
