George Levin Was Rothstein's Whale

Von Allmen and his family members invested in Rothstein's secret settlements through his friend George Levin and Levin's Banyon hedge fund. Von Allmen tried to get several friends to invest right before the scheme imploded.
Scherer told me yesterday that he has learned that Levin invested $120 million of his own money into the scheme before raising at least $300 more to put into Rothstein's scheme (including the Von Allmen investments).
Here's the kicker: Scherer says Levin kept rolling his returns back into the scheme and never took any profits.
"Levin let it ride," Scherer says. "Rather than take it out, he would
reinvest it back in. He thought he had $850 million in it total [with the profits]. If he would have tried to call in his money, it would have collapsed a lot sooner."
Suddenly it makes more sense. I wondered how Rothstein managed to steal so much (from appearances, at least a couple of hundred million during the past two years), keep his Ponzi going for so long, and still have $230 million left to plunder during his break-out in October. It looks like Levin-related money is the answer. He was Rothstein's biggest mark.
To fool Levin and others, Rothstein made up bank account statements showing that his trust accounts had well over $1 billion in them. On October 6, he claimed to have roughly $1.2 billion in them and had fake documents, which had supposedly come straight from TD Bank, to back him up. "It was a Ponzi account balance," says Scherer. "It was false returns. It wasn't real money."
Can you imagine how Levin felt when he learned that Rothstein had fled the country and all the money was gone? Talk about the bottom falling out. Still, sympathy in this case isn't easy. For one, Levin once owned a fraudulent firm himself and has used the court system to terrorize those who tried to bring attention to that fact. He hired a felon as Banyon's chief operating officer and is responsible for several fortunes lost in the scheme that were not his own. The whole scheme was seamy right off the bat; it was built on taking large parts of (fake) settlements from sexual assault victims and corporate whistleblowers. On top of that, the settlement investments didn't make sense from the get-go, and Rothstein was offering such huge returns that it's obvious that blind greed (or worse) was dictating Levin's decisions.
Scherer, though, says that Banyon was able to get a $70 million insurance policy in case of fraud on the Rothstein investments. So even an insurance company fell for the thing.
If he's successful, Scherer says that his clients and all other investors who weren't complicit in the crime will have their money returned. He says that without extreme negligence or worse from TD Bank officials like Frank Spinosa, Rothstein wouldn't have been able to do the damage he did. And he believes TD Bank is liable for the whole mess.
"My goal is to get all the money back for the investors from the bank," Scherer said. "That's what I'm trying to do here."

We've all agreed that he is not the "Octopus", and if he truly does have significant info about the senior players and money trail (especially if this turns out to be high level politicians, judges, and/or international in scope), he could be relocated into WitSec. This is a distinct possibility.

Not the same thing--although they feel similar. Even with swaps, if fraud is proven (the key factor) then the holder demands that the seller repurchase the debt in full. Fraud is not insured by any company. It would really be stupid to do. If someone were insured against fraud, they would have no motivation to do due dilligence. No one insures against financial fraud-it would destabilize the market (case in point, crash of 2007).
Though I appreciate your commentary, and do not disagree with you. I am stating that the fund's claim of "insurance" is bogus.

I'm starting to see the complexities behind this story.
At the end of the day, what do we really have here?
Some wannabe from the Bronx attends a less than stellar law school, known for admitting applicants that other schools rejected summarily. He becomes a moderately successful attorney, but deep down in his soul, despite the fact that he had already accomplished alot in relation to where he came from, it isn't enough.
He wants more. So he launches this new law firm with several other attorneys and heads to Las Olas, both his office and home. He increases his mingling with the affluent and somehow along the way he decides to swindle these rich bastards who he aspires to be like, but deep down has little respect for because as he learns each of their success stories, he comes to realize that most of them are frauds and many others lucky to have attained such wealth.
As he begins to successfully extract money from these greedy bastards, he does in fact throw money at some very worthwhile causes. Yes, it wasn't his money to give, granted.
But at the end of the day, do any of us really give a shit that SR stole money from a bunch of Rich Greedy Bastards, who probably don't give enough of their money away to worthwhile causes? SR did in fact give some of the money he stole from them to the poor and yes, he did enrich himself which I have no doubt was his true motivation. (So, I'm not buying the Robinhood bullshit)
Don't think for a moment that I am going soft here and that I give a flying fuk about SR. He's a loudmouth jag-off from the Bronx and bullied people in his Tom James zootsuits, which covered his small yet bloated frame. He even threatened the very fine writer of this blog who was just doing his job. In fact, he threatened him and his family and deserves his comeuppence just for that alone.

The website of Ballamor Capital Management, which was founded by Barry Bekkedam, say precious little about his background. Good thing for Google, eh?
Bekkedam grew up in Ontaria, but relocated to suburban Philadelphia, just in time to become a star basketball player for Archbishop Carroll, in Radnor PA. (Radnor is the current home of Ballamor Capital.) He graduated from high school in 1986.
From there, he became a star basketball player for Villanova. He graduated from Villanova in 1990 with a BS in accounting. It doesn't look like he pursued the typical path of accounting major, though. No public accounting experience, and no CPA listed. However, he did play professional basketball in Europe and South America.
With 8 years of experience (doing what?), he founded a private wealth management firm. At some point in the last decade, he was also on the board of directors of Money Centers of America, Inc. which appears to be headquartered in King of Prussia (suburban Philadelphia). Money Centers of America bills itself as a "leading provider of gaming industry cash access solutions." Money Centers also acquired iGamesEntertainment, Inc, a Nevada corporation.
The topic of gambling certainly keeps cropping up, doesn't it?
I wonder if Bekkedam is acquainted with the Paolino family? Lisa Paolino graduated from Villanova and was the Vice-President of the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners until she resigned in a flap related to her attempted run for State Senator. Lisa Paolino is the sister of Louis Paolino, who currently owns a residence in Fort Lauderdale. I assume most here are familiar with the name.

2- I am familiar with the Paolinos as I live in Princeton and Lauderdale. But that is all I know.
3- More, Money Centers operates in a variety of venues including the Caribbean. They are also involved with check cashing services which brings me to -
4- I know someone who use to own a sizable garbage removal business in NJ. This person now owns several businesses including check cashing services. This person explained that it is highly probable that Barry B. was "washing" money through MCofA offshore and in Vegas.
- He explained [that he heard] there was a side deal between SR and MC to invest and offshore money.
This person lives in Boca as well.

At one time, I also knew some people from that area who had a background in a specialized segment of the waste business, and who were also very interested in internet gambling. It's an interesting combination, to say the least. Trash business to check cashing seems a little unusual, as well.
For anyone who has the time, the video of Barry B should be watched. I only looked at about the first half, but found it quite illuminating. A paraphrase from Barry B.: never have we seen alternative investments with risks so low and returns so high from such predictable asset classes. IOW, gobbledygook from a slick operator to a group of apparently underqualifed, inexperienced volunteer trustees of public employee pension plans. Apparently, the next golden pot to be looted is the public pension plans.
Goat Face, Barry B. also mentioned that he was working to write and/or revise investment policies for the State of Pennsylvania. Frightening!
As an aside, there was a rather notorious hedge fund a few years ago that also looted several public pension plans. That hedge fund, which was based out of Connecticut, also had significant connections to South Florida, South Eastern Pa, and Canada. It has yet to go to trial. I guess the US Attorneys office in the Southern District of
Florida has more important things to do, like setting up poor folks from Liberty City for terrorism charges.

4. these funds consistently advised their investors that all was cool and wonderful when the shit was hitting the fan. it appears that nordlicht was an expert on up is down, right is left.

The fact that AJ Discala bounced from a tie-up with three billion dollar con man Tom Petters to this operation makes me think that the core effort was to wash the Tom Petters billions.
Tom Petters is still in court, the FBI only took down his operation last September. He had the obligatory Florida boathouse on the ICW, and was jailed without bail because they had him wiretapped about leaving the country by his power yacht.

My friend is an artist who enjoys beauty and positive life force who told me no amount of money would get her to work for those two every again. What your friend says about the Bates could be said about 50% of the decorators around here. Tons of bad taste and poor design runs rampant. Also, plenty of designers are difficult, nasty, don't pay their bills and live beyond their means. My curiosity about a Ponzi scheme, lead me to the following but not limited to: corrupt (current and ex) sheriffs, sleazy attorneys married to corrupt judges, murder (Melissa), ex cons that happen to all land jobs at RRA in some capacity, one very highly paid paralegal driving around in an expensive car and owning a nice new house after her “best friend” got murdered, unethical judges on the take (enter numerous names here), crooked bankers, (Spinosa) crooked banks, (TD) “family” guys from the 70’s(Vesco), “family” guys now, school board crimes (have not had a chance to look into those yet) unethical Senators and State Representatives, bribery of government officials, shady police department members , (current and ex) fake hedge fund deals, illegal campaign contributions, strip clubs I never heard of, car dealers, car kit dealers, drug dealers, attorneys working under cover for the FBI, private jets to Morocco, overpaid “decorators”, overpaid "suit designers", family members of government officials benefitting from frivolous lawsuits, and the list goes on and on. I have learned so many new interesting things about “Florida, Florida, Florida” as Tim Russert would say. I don’t think you could make this stuff up if you tried.
At least in this recession, when honest, hard working people are losing their jobs left and right, one this is for certain…… Bob Norman has job security. There is enough scum and corruption in Florida to write about for years to come!

So TD Bank bought Commerce Bank in Cherry Hill, NJ (another Philadelphia suburb). Another amazing coincidence. Commerce Bank had MANY problems, if I recall correctly.
Some of its senior executives were indicted for fraud relating to the corruption of public officials.

It is alleged that the two officers made favorable loans to the former city treasurer to steer municipal underwriting business to CBH. Following the indictment, CBH suspended the two officers in question. Additionally, CBH stated that it was cooperating fully with the investigation and that, beyond these two individuals, neither the company nor any of its subsidiaries, as well as any other officers or employees, are targets of the investigation.
There may have been additional rumors about corruption on the other side of the river as well.
