Late Friday, one day after staffers at Deerfield Beach City Hall met to discuss bids by local restaurateurs for the space at the end of the city's pier, JB's on the Beach has withdrawn from the competition.

Of course, in August, JB's won that bid only to have it thrown out when it was revealed that JB's had neglected to mention its having made campaign contributions to Mayor Peggy Noland, who voted for JB's, where she used to work.

The restaurant on 3030 Ocean Blvd. was thought to be a front-runner in the second round of bidding. It's not clear what caused JB's to bail out.

Chaz Stevens, whose retirement from blogging lasted almost a month, has a theory: that Noland's son Thomas worked at the bar when the bid took place in August. And he's offering $500 to anyone who can confirm that hunch.
