Everglades Club Membership Haunts Limbaugh in Rams Deal

The uproar over Rush Limbaugh's bungled bid to buy the St. Louis Rams wouldn't be complete without a mention of his membership in Palm Beach's oldest and most exclusive country club, the Everglades Club.

Palm Beach's infamous bloviater was kicked out of a group trying to buy the Rams after several black NFL players objected to the deal. Shockingly, they weren't thrilled to have an owner who has said the NFL "all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips" or that "all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson."

To make matters worse, Page Six, the New York Post's infamous gossip column, got in a little dig about Limbaugh's membership in the Everglades Club. In fact, the paper cites the New Times cover story about the club's long history of excluding blacks and Jewish people. As we reported then:

Renowned socialite C.Z. Guest once told a reporter that she and her husband were temporarily suspended from the club after they brought Jewish guests -- Estee Lauder and her husband -- to a party there in 1972. And Kleenex heir James Kimberly talked of how he and Sammy Davis Jr. once showed up together at the club only to have a doorman escort them back to the parking lot.

Today, there are no black members at the Everglades, and the club's attitude toward the few Jewish members is similar to the U.S military policy toward homosexual soldiers: Don't ask, don't tell.

The Page Six item includes a threat from the Rev. Al Sharpton that he would come down to Palm Beach "with some brothers and sisters" and try to have dinner at the Everglades.

Best of luck, Reverend. Maybe Limbaugh will put you on his guest list.
