Stabbing Suspect Caught

The victim, 33-year-old Edris Berry, was at the gas station at around 1:50 a.m. when two young women pulled in to purchase gas. Berry approached the women and began to have a casual conversation with the ladies, which seemed to enrage a bystander, 26-year-old Wallace Salters, for unknown reasons. Salters pulled out a knife and stabbed Berry multiple times. Berry, who lived near the gas station, was transported to North Broward Medical Center, where later he died.

BSO detectives obtained information about a potential location for the suspect in Pompano Beach. Detectives searched the residence and did not locate him. However, while they were there, occupants of a neighboring apartment alerted detectives that a man had just emerged from their attic and ran out the door. BSO Pompano Beach deputies caught up to Salters and arrested him outside of 810 SW 6 Ct.

Salters acted alone in the homicide and he is being held at BSO's Main Jail facing one charge of second degree murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony and burglary to an occupied dwelling. The second person of interest was located, interviewed and released.

In October 2007, the same Shell gas station was the site of a double homicide during which two clerks were shot and killed during a robbery. BSO detectives later arrested Marcus Lumsdon and charged him with murder.
