Ten Best Quotes From Yesterday's Health Care Forum in Palm Beach

no means no.JPG
Only one person had a sign
Yesterday's Health Care Forum at the Palm Beach County Government Center, sponsored by the Republican Party of Palm Beach County, was a fairly subdued affair. A total of two protesters turned up outside the center in support of Progressive Democrats of America: They held a banner favoring a single-payer system. It was nothing like the three-ring circus that had erupted outside the recent forum in Delray Beach. No high school marching band, for instance. Which only goes to show that right-wing radicals really know how to throw a hell of a party.

Inside, things were pretty sedate too. A lot of people were dressed in navy or steel gray, in handsome suits with handsomely coifed silver locks, holding expensive-looking briefcases or efficient clipboards. Mark Foley was there, dapper and grinning. So were former County Commissioner Addie Green and Town of Palm Beach Councilman Bill Diamond (Diamond called for the town to secede from Palm Beach County not long ago) and County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor.

Only one person carried a sign. The most interesting T-shirt in the crowd was worn by Jupiter resident and Navy veteran Stan Bloom, which read Tyranny Response Team in bold letters. Bloom, who had a long gray ponytail, said the tyranny referred to the "Obama Tzars."

By the time the meeting began at 1 p.m., there were still a few empty seats in the house. On the dais to discuss HR 3200 were congressional candidates Edward Lynch and Col. Allen West, Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings, and surprise dark horse Dr. Ben Graber, a Democratic former Broward County mayor and State House rep who's also a Coral Springs obstetrician. Wild and crazy Sid Dinerstein moderated. Somebody recited a weird blessing that started out sounding like the Lord's Prayer and then went AWOL (imploring God to spread his loving arms around us, etc -- maybe it was supposed to be nondenominational, I dunno), and then the games began. Hit the jump for our favorite sound bites.

1. Alcee Hastings: (in booming, stentorian tones) "There ain't no such thing as a death panel!"

2. Ed Lynch: "I would never post an immigration officer at the door of an emergency room. But I sure as hell would post one at the exit." (lots of applause, here)

3. Hastings (reading from a recent pay stub) "I paid $6,621 into FICA, $1,848 into Medicare, and $3,167 for health insurance." (hisses, shouts of "who cares?" from audience).

4. Col. West: "When I was in the Army, the officers stood at the end of the line at the mess hall. If the kitchen ran out of food, you didn't eat."

5. Hastings: "If anyone here thinks the insurance companies don't make decisions about the kind of health care you receive, you've got another thing coming."

6: Graber: "What insurance company performs surgery? What insurance company performs examinations? Their job is to make money."

7. Lynch: "This is the first time in my life that I have ever seen people who stood up and said, 'This is not the way things should be done!!!" (This was such a load of bull hockey that even this objective reporter let loose an audible snigger. Can't remember if Lynch was waving his "dogeared copy of the Constitution" at this point or if that came later.)

8. Graber: (explaining why U.S. citizens go to Paris, India, and Germany for medical procedures): "Bush stopped funding medical research in this country for eight years."

9. Hastings: "Tax him, tax she, tax the guy behind the tree. But don't tax me!"

10. West: "We need to do three things. Recommit to values. Restore the rule of law to this republic. And reclaim American pride."

Zzzzzzzz. Yes, it was all very exciting. Wish you coulda been there.

The safest method to find lazer hair treatment within driving distance is really word of mouth and not ever just by some MD who's receiving a piece of the action. I used to see an MD to get laser treatments. I had blotchy hairy areas and had recently been thru the rest of the hair removal techniques. I bought a tria hair removal and haven't been more pleased. Then finally I'm hair free for the summer season months. This will be a perfect yr for me.

tria

I had been performing laser hair removal system applications for over a year at present on my facial beard. Until then I had a heavy dark beard. I'm pleased with the results. The actual hairs have become thin and I haven't gone back for treatment for about 6 months. Let me mention that it did feel painful a little on my top lip and there were times that I got a little bit of redness on my chin. I suggest Intense pulsed light to those with thicker hairs or have got large patches of hair they want to eliminate. For the males that might like to do their rough facial hair be prepard for patches in the following months and lots of people saying man what is up with your facial hair.

I swear my face looks like a pizza so I guess it's a little funny that I bought Proactiv at a site called pimplehut.com . It has been around two weeks since I've started using proactiv so I really hope proactiv works for me as well as so many netizens online claim. Anyone here a true believer and is willing to provide some information on how long it takes to start working and perhaps some suggestions to do and some things not to do?Thanks ahead of time... <3 <3 <3

Hi It depends which application are you running ? Press ctrl+alt+del and go to Task Manager, There click on "Processes" tab, Check the check box "Show processes from all users" Then see which application is taking all this cpu. If thats a ligit application then yes yourprocessor speed is not enough to run that app or if that application is not a critical system application but just some 3rd party software then may be that application have some memory leak or bug causing the cpu load. Regards JF

Am stuck between two of my interests! A degree in Criminal Justice and Information Technology. I believe the world is becoming big and are looking for people who could help the increase of criminal activity and more technology are increasing too and the future is beggining to evolve with technology. But I want your opinion, though. I would like you to tell me in your opinion what degree would help benefit me in the future? Which degree would not make me regret my mistake and suddently want me to change my decision the other way around! I would keep it in consideration each and every one of your opinions! This would help me big time. Please be very detailed and try to inspire me so I would eventually chose either one. In the end of this discussion I will make my decision. Thank you!

This may sound weird, but I'm doing a study on the "limits" of laptop safety for school children. Something I have been searching on is, can school students get to unsafe and illegal pornography and then somehow hide it from those who check it? Afterall, it seems school board members and faculty members have been caught for this, but not as many children. Maybe they know something that the faculty doesn't. I hope to find this information for the purpose of increasing the security in school laptops. Thank You. 10 points to the best answer.

What method is habituated to to repair a open bumper that has been MINIMALLY determined inwards? I certain around stimulation treatment. Is that bleeding successful? I wouldn't invite it a dent, more like a slight relay in the level dance, apropos 4 inches sustained, that occurs from hitting a metal limit sideways, so that the pole forces the bumper inwards slightly?

Quick points-

First, once the the so called "public option" undermines the private insurance industry over time- through two ways- first, by prohibiting private plans from enrolling new individuals to enroll, as employers move their employees off their private plans towards the Public Option and its cheaper costs, the Public Option will cause many private insurers to go under. See multiple Sections, e.g. Sections 112, 113, 116, 121, 122, 123, 124.

Second, look at the presuppositions that underlie your argument. What right does the Federal Government have in undermining the private insurance industry? What right does the Federal Government have to coerce you or your employer into its plan by threats of punitive tax hikes if you don't carry health insurance, or if your employer's "standard" of coverage is not "sufficient" in they eyes of government?

Of course insurance companies deal with these issues all the time- but these decisions BELONG in private sector, they should NEVER be made by government. Why on earth would anyone want a politicized healthcare system? Why on earth would you want your personal medical records in the hands of government bureacrats? I thought liberals were so concerned about the Right to Privacy. And you are only kidding yourself if you don't think that down the road, medical decision making will become politicized, favoring certain groups over others.

Finally, it is alot easier to replace your insurer than it is to jettison your single-payer system. If you are denied by your insurer for a procedure (which by the way is a rare occurrence, because insurers' doctor panels will usually only reject people whose condition is gravely terminal, or if the procedure being requested is highly experimental, and outside of the person's coverage plan).

Thom Debord
Thom Debord

Bill:

Thank you very much.

If I'm reading this correctly, it means that those suffering from certain conditions will be allowed limitless hospital admissions, while those suffering from other conditions will not. And this is a provision of the public option, which is meant to compete against private insurance companies.

But can one seriously imagine an insurance option that will remain solvent without placing limits on what is covered? How is this different from what private insurance companies do all the time? And if it's not different at all, why aren't the men in their boardrooms referred to as "death panels"? My mother is, at this exact moment, not taking the chemotherapy she very likely needs because, when purchasing insurance, she didn't go with the "cancer" option. She couldn't afford the extra $30 a week. She is allowed only the bare minimum of testing, and her coverage extends only to X-number of dollars. I'd say this rather limits the number of times she can get "admitted" to a hospital before debt rears up and eats her.

I realize that anecdotes are not the same as evidence, and I do not mean this as an appeal to emotion. What I'm pointing out is that such stories are hardly uncommon, and constitute an example of precisely the kind of dysfunction you fear will arise from this bill. But I cannot imagine that the Secretary will be as capricious as our current insurers, who are beholden to boards of directors who reward them for coverage denied, not coverage granted.

Thom-

From the text of the bill, HR 3200:

On pages 284-288, SEC. 1151 -

(ii) EXCLUSION OF CERTAIN READMISSIONS.For purposes of clause (i), with respect to a hospital, excess readmissions shall not include readmissions for an applicable condition for which there are fewer than a minimum number (as determined by the Secretary) of discharges for such applicable condition for the applicable period and such hospital.

and then under Definitions:

(A) APPLICABLE CONDITION.The term applicable condition means, subject to subparagraph (B), a condition or procedure selected by the Secretary . . .

which is then followed by:

(E) READMISSION.The term readmission means, in the case of an individual who is discharged from an applicable hospital, the admission of the individual to the same or another applicable hospital within a time period specified by the Secretary from the date of such discharge.

Finally, we get the money paragraph-

(6) LIMITATIONS ON REVIEW.There shall be no administrative or judicial review under section 1869, section 1878, or otherwise of...

-------------------

note that 1869 and 1878 refer to the proposed amendments to the Social Security Act, not to HR 3200

Based on these sections within the bill, we can affirmatively state the following:

The feds are granted the power to determine what constitutes an applicable [medical] condition.

And who determines which procedures or conditions this rule applies to? Well, it's any condition or procedure selected by the Secretary.

The feds also have the power to determine who is allowed readmission into a hospital.

Finally, there can be no appeal or judicial review of the decisions made here. The Secretary of the HHS is exempted from any further review.

This pieces of legislation is the worst legalese I have ever read, and its authors no doubt are intentionally vague to keep this bill's true intentions from as many people as possible. Why anyone on earth would assume that the government has beneficent motives for the people it wishes to "insure" after reading a bill this vague and dense is completely beyond me.

Thom Debord

Bill:

Well, don't just say so. I can't prove that there aren't death panel provisions in the bill any more than I can prove that there aren't Bible verses sanctifying anarcho-capitalism. You can't prove a negative.

But proving a positive -- that's one helluvalot easier. So I'm gonna post that link again:

http://waysandmeans.house.gov/...

That's the bill. Please direct me to the "limitations of review" provisions to which you refer. (And if it's on pages 425 - 428, please provide analysis: I've read those several times, and cannot find the scary things that I've been told lurk there.) If that's worth your time, and if you're able, I am absolutely willing to be swayed.

Thanks,- TD

As a young, uninsured American who works hard and pays the bills - SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP! I'm sick of this "healthcare debate" which from my point of view has a lot more to do with party factions and power than anything else. If Bush had tried this a few years ago Republicans would have kissed his ass - same with Clinton and the Democrats. This is a power struggle and nothing else.

Bill
Bill

Thom-

I tried mightily to find one valid point that you made in your "rebuttal", but I couldnt, since all you do muster is caricature and ridicule- on top of your sarcasm. But yes my friend, there are death panels, no matter how much you claim otherwise. Tucked into several pages of H.R. 3200 are various limitation on review provisions that are designed to vest bureaucrats with unilateral, non-appealable control over available treatments and their costs. What's more, you will have no recourse to challenge any of these decisions in the courts or anywhere else. Those are rightfully called "DEATH PANELS", as much as you may try to sanitize what they really are.

You don't bore me, Thom, I am glad you responded to my rejoinder. I rather enjoy picking apart your specious reasoning and misinformation. How's that for irony?

-Bill

Thom Debord
Thom Debord

Bill:

Oh, you bore. Obviously she's not an objective reporter. That "objective reporter" bit was irony.

And while I'd never take seriously the civic wisdom of someone who grokketh irony not, it does alarm me that some the central argument you've regurgitated here has actually become commonplace. So, quick rebuttal:

Indeed, any semi-educated opponent of Obamacare would consider most of the Democrats' arguments to be "strawman" fallacies. Unfortunately, most of the people showing up at these forums are straw men. They have not done their homework, and they believe outrageous things. They are caricatures of conservatism, led into ridiculousness by pundits who are caricatures themselves.

There are real problems with Obamacare, but most of those who oppose it have no idea what they are. By siding with an insane rabble who have been goaded into hating a thing they do not understand, educated conservatives have decided that, in this case, the means justify the end. And what will this leave us with? Why, it will leave us here.

(And if that link didn't work, here you go: http://www.newheadnews.com/har...

- Thom Debord

p.s: No, no, no. There will be no death panels, twit. Jesus! Just read the goddamned things! http://waysandmeans.house.gov/...

Bill
Bill

Well Gail, here's another take on your comments-

Alcee's quote #1 is WRONG - there are indeed panels created by the that will decide matters of life and death, and whose decisions cannot be reviewed by the courts or any other authority. Just because the text of the legislation does not say "DEATH PANEL" does not mean that those boards will not be making decisions of life and death, particularly on people over the age of 65.

#3- Not sure how that remark qualifies as a best "quote", but it is heartening that members of Congress at least have the courtesy to pay their taxes, which should be a minimum requirement for Office, not an extraordinary accomplishment- proof positive for how low the bar is set for elected Democrats by the media.

#5- What credible commentator or opinion maker who opposes HR 3200 does not think insurance companies make decisions about the kind of health care we receive? Alcee spent most of his time debating straw men, which shows how bereft of ideas he and the Democrats are with regards to real healthcare reform.

#7- You're not anything near an objective reporter. You have strong liberal leanings, and you are partisan to Democrats. At least admit the truth. And Mr. Lynch was correct, it has been quite some time since so much opposition or public outcry was exhibited about a single piece of legislation in quite some time. So save your sniggering until the next response.

#8- Here is where you should have been sniggering- this is such an outrageously false claim, maybe you should have actually performed some of your self proclaimed "objective" journalism. Medical Research was funded in the country prior to Obama, LoL. The NIH was certainly funded, for starters. More correctly would be to state that President Bush limited federal funding of embryo-destructive research to already existing stem-cell lines- He did not "stop funding medical research" as you say. Journalism entails performing research- how about trying some for a change?

#9- Here's Alcee again, debating strawmen- but oddly, he has aptly summarized the Democrat position. Tax the Rich, tax the middle class, but don't tax lower income workers. How about this radical idea, Alcee- if you are going to raise taxes, raise them on everyone, and then see just how popular those tax hikes are.

And don't rely on the liberal media to do objective reporting or fact checking, either.
