Morning Juice: Mystery in Miramar; Hurricane's Northern Path May Kill Bill

Categories: Morning Juice

So far, the morning brings no new information on what, exactly, happened yesterday in Miramar -- just that whatever it was was horrible. WPLG has some video with interviews from neighbors. In the meantime, here's what else is happening in South Florida:
  • The U.S. Justice Department has indicted Albert Gonzalez -- not to be confused with Alberto Gonzales, Bush-era U.S. attorney general, who fired all those federal prosecutors for political reasons. No, this one is the alleged Bernard Madoff of identity theft -- a record-setting fraudster with a South Florida address (Miami, technically) jailed in New York. "Soupnazi" to his fellow hackers. Anyone else terrified to check out your credit card statement? Like even more than usual?
  • Bill's got hurricane strength but it's headed north, not east, which puts South Florida and Bermuda out of the dreaded "Cone of Uncertainty," which, as WPLG's Max Mayfield reminds us, is certainly right two-thirds of the time. Hey, just two more months of this prime-time hurricane vigil! Get comfortable.
  • The Dolphins won their preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars with the help of a touchdown catch by Ernest Wilford from Chad Henne -- let's hope those two are just getting warmed up.
  • Lincoln Diaz-Balart took himself out of the running for the appointment to U.S. Senate, reports Dara Kam of the Palm Beach Post. That leaves Jim Smith and Bobby Martinez, who's meeting with Charlie Crist today in Miami.
  • Broward County commissioners' obsession with making cuts in the sheriff's budget turns to the crime lab. The Miami Herald's Amy Sherman reports that that's the subject of a budget workshop today.
