That's Low-Down: Pembroke Pines Man Gets Rich by Stealing From Disabled Cousin

Categories: Broward, Crime
John Kopras, formerly of Pembroke Pines, entered a guilty plea in Fort Lauderdale's federal court Thursday to charges that he raided the Social Security accounts of a cousin who was mentally disabled.

According to the federal prosecutor's news release, Kopras set up trust accounts at Wachovia Bank that were supposed  to be for his mentally disabled cousin. But prosecutors say Kopras withdrew more than $250,000 for his own use. Here's the federal prosecutor's news release.

Kopras, 46, currently lives in Cincinnati. But he'll be moving into the Big House come October 28. That's when he's scheduled to be sentenced for conviction on two counts of wire fraud, which carries a max penalty of 20 years.
