New Hampshire Ends Live Greyhound Racing; Will Florida Follow Suit?

Jailamony toys.JPG
Jailamony used to race at Mardi Gras. Now she sits around looking adorable.

Live greyhound racing in New Hampshire ended swiftly this week with a new state bill that allows the two tracks there to have simulcast betting without having to run dogs on the premises.

Similar bills have been proposed in the Florida Legislature each of the past three years, but none made it out of committee. South Florida, home of the country's first dog track, still has three of the state's busiest tracks: Flagler Dog Track and Gaming Center in Miami, Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm, and Mardi Gras Race Track and Gaming Center in Hallandale Beach, where my dog raced.

GREY2K USA, a Massachusetts-based antiracing group, has lobbied the New Hampshire Racing and Charitable Gaming Commission (formerly the Pari-Mutuel Commission) for years. Recently, the group has turned its eyes to the Sunshine State.

It should probably be noted that the New Times office is a fan of greyhounds. In May, I wrote a cover story about the racing industry in Florida and the injured greyhound I adopted (seen here), and for the story, I spoke with GREY2K President Christine Dorchak.

"This is an incredible victory for everyone who cares about animals, and ends a sad chapter in New Hampshire history," she said via email.

"The fight is still not completely over. We will not rest until greyhound racing is illegal in New Hampshire supporters, and dog racing cannot be resurrected."

According to the GREY2K website, more than 1,200 dogs have been injured or killed while racing in New Hampshire since 2005.

Florida laws don't require tracks or trainers to report injuries or deaths.

Florida has nearly half the live tracks in the country and the majority of breeding farms.

Dorchak visited the Florida Capitol earlier this year to hold a news conference calling for the end of racing here. She says her group is more focused than ever on drawing attention to the living conditions greyhounds endure.

I asked my dog what she thinks of this new turn in the industry, but as I've stated here before, she doesn't speak English.

In this video, New Hampshire officials and GREY2K representatives comment on the "moral issue" of greyhound racing.

greyhounds are bred to run; they are no happier unless they are run. at least once a day - best if twice.  either next to you jogging; along side of you riding bike; in a park chasing ball; or competetive chasing that towel in the field..   eitherway  those muscles need to be excercised. i can't tell you all the dogs i've seen purchased by incompetent people that crate large and small dogs;give them one little 3 min walk per day -if that and the animal ends an unhappy overweight couch potateo like the owner. not to mentions the ones that get disgarded back into society when the idiot owner "can't deal with it or something" (very sad for millions of dogs).   all competative athletes get injured and prospective careers  get changed; ask any human.  i support animal humane societies both locall and national ones.  i don't wanna see crate condition in any kennels; breeders; as such;  i feel there should be minimum pen sizes for all animals; that should start at 10 ft by 10 ft; even for the smallest ones. and go up from there;; also ; unless its an clean farmland type atmosphere; these small vets/hospt/kennels should be kept out of inner cities and suburbia unless they can provide multiple (more than two -three min) large GREEN spaces for the animals to roam solo to do there'yr bussiness during recovery or await their owner return. at a minumum of 3X outings per day. if you can't afford the time or trip to a nice rural kennal u probably should have an animal.  crating should be outlawed - only for transpo; nothing else. "yeah but my minni small dog loves his crate" yes then give him his own small room then... crates become too easily an abusive option to scum bag owners & "practitioners" of mills and dumblazy vets/kennels that care more about the nightly rate than the comfort of the patient / animal awaiting his owners return.   i truley don't what to see any animals abused; no the beef steer i eat; the milk cows i drink, not the turkeys/ chickens or any of that.  And i'm not gonna tell peolple what they should eat or not eat or drink.  telling some one what to do is usally the "easy" answer;;;; don't eat this or that; don't gamble on horses or dogs ; or racing pig shows; or go to circuses/ sled dog races;;  or don't do whatever...... and like thats gonna stop abuse;;;;   sorry not gonna work dude/dudette.    the only thing that stops abuse or at least makes people think twice is singapore like laws and the enforcement of such laws. ...that's the problem with this country (and i love this country -it is truly the best; even as corrupt as our political system is;; its still very much less corrupt as others with more freedoms))  we don't enforce the good laws we have; but the tax/time wasting laws we have gets enforced.  in some cases. i just can't see out lawing an activitey if its run properly; fix it don't outlaw it..  it ruins it for those that do like to watch dog races; or race remote controlled boats or whatever it is that you love to do.  i'm amazed at the amount of time and effort legistlators will grandstand to eliminate or criminilize something rather than just control/regulate it properly through enforcible laws that could easily be passed. think of the jobs/taxes/ and fines that could be generated if existing laws were enforced once and awhile....    lets start with welfare fraud.  aalso i'm not saying lets forget or backburner; dog racing; kenneling or animal treatment..   but hey ---hello? this country's in deep doo-doo at the moment.. we (our legistlators)     need to be enacting national initaitves in order to get jobs and dollars into the hands of working families and pay down all the debt of both political parties spending....   how about a national vehicle conversion plan to alcohol/methanol?   in addition to elect; solar and wind projects.  we only utalize about 7% of the plantable land in this country.. teach the young unemployed to grow sugar beets (best for countries climate).  the skins make a perfect natual additve to grains for our livestock food/nutrition.. the fuel burns clean for enviromental factors.. the competition to petro will reduce the petro costs for petro we will always need;.;;  get corporatins/ refininers in on it so they get in on the profit and subsidize gthem  to teach our unemployed young how to refine it (chemistry)  ;; also teach the young/ utilize the car industry to swap out the piston rings and get the change going faster into existing vehiles... our gov legistlators love to subsidize things that make them look good;; so why not help us little guys along the way.  a better more prosperous country would $help us train/govern our fellow man to treat animals better; not to mention maybe we could help the hospitalization /health & services(socail secuirtiy) isssues for our species in this country;......   or just keep voting for the same 'ol narrow minded legistlators that want to play the what can u do for me and i for u game that goes on in washington.  we need a government WITH A PLAN;;  not a vision/hallucination.. sorry for the spelling and the rant;; but i was just looking for something fun to do or go see  in my neighboring state;  and when i checked the dog track that i heard about in the north east;; allas;;; another activity outlawed due to the fact that some poeple are generally butt wipes  (any have to cut corners to make a buck at the expense of others -be it animal or human) and the few always ruin it for the many;; so maybe i'll travel in the other direction from my state and see what's up; thanks NH.  next use your efforts to kill the abuse and not the sport. signed Tim -in upstate; BUF; NY

I guess the numbers of "killed or injured" don't take into account the euthanizations?

Why is that?

Michael Mooney must really go back and take an extremely close look into these "dog factories".A Government supporting violence merely breeds more violence and all brutal people start somewhere. The Greyhound Racing Tracks are no different.Senate President , EARL RAY TOMBLIN, WEST VIRGINIA and his Mother (TOMBLIN KENNELS), are cruel, blatant abusers of not only Greyhound life, but lives of our Ecosystem. They , quite bluntly, torture,( and with glee,) animal life, be it wild, in training for the racetracks or in babyhood. ( "slow" puppies)They do it all for their love of money and have no apologies. In fact, it is as if they are "entitled" to environmental destruction. And who is connected to this? MIKE GREEN , WEST VIRGINIA, for one, also a Greyhound Breeder who pretends to just "handle dogs" and made his finances off these shackled hounds. Another is DEAN MINER whose god is not the Bible but cold cash, and anyone in West Virginia associated to them which probably means everyone in that "government".COALITION FOR CLEAN ELECTIONS demands change! Dear God in Heaven:Work your miraculous ways.

"...before they let this group manipulate facts."Dale Childs, we'd like to ask you about your "group".Just relating to this article alone, I can think of three nasties. In no particular order because they are not at all interesting just somehow, too powerful for the little education, simple genes, and "farm-life" they took advantage of, and probably all in the name of "God".Martin Roper has already proven himself a "clown". Ken Strawbridge was completely oblivious to Greyhounds waiting for years in Fort Lauderdale kennels for homes yet he is breeding more, for his whim and entertainment, along with Michael Green, Politician, of West Virginia, who, amazingly enough, calls himself, a "dog handler". Is he embarassed to tell people what he really does to pork up the Greyhound Racetracks? He is directly associated with gambling. He should say so. Just like you should say you are not a veterinarian and not pretend to be as you have no idea of the physical and emotional pain of dogs in the Greyhound Racing "Industry".

"Manipulate"....ah, interesting word....This is THE Dale Childs..."supervisor "of Greyhound Racing? I hate to "call you" on this but when you are talking "injuries", are you a certified veterinarian? Is it ok for dogs to bleed, have dislocated toes, and oh golly, let's not even talk of anything "broken"! (how many "OOP" did you ring up? Just wondering.)I heard , via the grapevine, it was not Grey2k at all, who "manipulated"(your word) reports? Nuts. Now who is "wrong" and who got slapped due to that?I really wish you "people" wouldn't be so dead-tone with "injuries" and "killed" Greyhounds, period. It makes you sound pretty "cut and dry" if not down right, cold and merciless.Just a "heads - up" for all the slow learners out there . We are glued to Ironicus Maximus. And as we all know, he has absolutely , nothing to gain when he writes. Do you?

Grey2K would like people to believe that 1,200 greyhounds have been killed or injured since 2005, but their figures are inflated to say the least. In reality the injury rate is below 1% depending on the tracks. Greyhound racing has gone from New Hampshire because it is more profitable for the tracks to operate without live racing, not because of dog condition. Grey2K is really forcused on stopping gambling, not just racing. People should look long & hard before they let this group manipulate facts to try to achieve their goals.
