New U.S. Atty Will Be a Fraud-Buster

Tomorrow is the deadline for applying for the job of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Unfortunately for eager bloggers, not a creature is stirring.

Over this past week, Juice has phoned South Florida attorneys thought to be candidates for the nomination. None of them agreed to be quoted. It's bad form to appear campaigning for the nomination in the media, much less a blog.

But as we wait 24 hours for a list of names to surface, let's talk about what the priorities might be. In a word: fraud. Madoff-style Ponzi schemes and other financial fraud. Mortgage fraud. Medicare fraud.

In this recession, it's a hot topic across the country, but South Florida being the fraudster's playground, there figures to be an extra emphasis placed here. You can bet that whomever gets the nomination, he or she will bring a wealth of experience in tackling financial crimes.

By necessity, it may mean fewer drug cases. In addition, there figures to be less urgency to make a terrorism bust, which should come as a relief to critics of the Jose Padilla case and the Liberty City Six.

On the other hand, if you're one of the region's many un-busted white-collar crooks, this might be a good time to get out of the business and take a permanent vacation to Venezuela, or some other country not big on extraditing criminals to the U.S.

I do hope that more and more people will learn about ID theft and how this kind of fraud can be prevented. It is not very difficult to do this. What we need to do is to be extra careful and keep our passwords and account numbers secret.I would also want to share another article that I read that others might also find helpful at:http://www.mortgagefraudblog.c...With this in mind, let us also remember to stay vigilant at all times that our credit card number is safe and that no one else can access them to commit fraud.
