A Newspaper Retirement Well-Spent (So Far)

Former Sun-Sentinel Assistant City Editor Alan Cherry, who recently took a voluntary buyout from the company, had his premiere concert during a recent going-away party in Plantation (some of y'all are going to recognize some of the audience members). He's now converting half a room in his house into a music studio, so there will be more.

I don't know if he's singing about a woman or the Sentinel, but watch out. It grows on you.

(Also, any reference to rampant dope-smoking or binge drinking is purely anecdotal. Honest.)

To Rollo Tomasi, Is City Link still around? I haven't seen it in a while, but you did make an astute observation about it turning into a rag of lists every week. Because of that and its penchant for short, shallow, uninteresting stories caused me to give up on it. I know two people who got the axe from Mr. Cline and they told me they pretty much surfed the web for the bulk of their content. It's sad what City Link became.

So...I sat two chairs down from Alan for at least two years and had no idea about his impeccable talents. Interesting! You're right, it does grow on you. However, some choreography is needed. A little more than Brittany's beer dancing in the background. Good stuff. Hey guys. Miss you!

Was Russell channeling Rick Moranis from Ghostbusters early in that vid? And has anyone ever seen Alan Cherry and Judah Friedlander in the same place? This are almost like watching living obits. Sad.
Metaphors are fun. The trick, of course, is to fathom their meaning. For example: After an angry lifetime devoted to journalism, Alan Cherry celebrated his leaving the Sun-Sentinel with an original ballad about being stoned, drunk and heartbroken. Or: The current issue of City Link contains three pages of old fashioned editorial content and four pages of pain management ads. Is their a subtext to all this? Possibly. Or not. To be fair � and possibly picky � I don�t believe City Link�s grey assemblage of restaurant, film and the like as journalism. After all, if �lists� are journalism, then so is a phone book. But then ours is a Brave New World where merely saying a thing makes it so � as in Paris Hilton is an important person and Castro Cuba is a threat to the United States. Okay. City Like Editor Jake Cline is careful to avoid words like �news� and �journalism� in his half-page column introducing � TAH-TAH! � the weekly�s new logo CLM. Which stands for City Link Metromix.com. Which results from what Cline calls �a full-on marriage� between City Link and its �web partner Metromix.com.� Oh yes. Cline also displays a sharp talent for revisionist history when he details �this publication�s tortuous path from the bratty, music- and scandal-obsessed XS magazine � a name that seemed regrettable even then � to the significantly more sober City Link that emerged in 1997 to the sharp, lifestyle-oriented weekly we�ve become today� following the shit-canning of the weekly�s more talented writers a few months back. But again, I may be overly picky. However�. Being an old fart, I was around when Mother Tribune gave birth to �XS as a free and free-wheeling weekly �alternative� newspaper. What�s more, I read it and enjoyed XS regularly for its �attitude� and �edge� during its infancy. And now�.? Let�s just say Mother Tribune�s weekly attempt to capture the youth market has morphed from a smart-ass kid with rocks in a glass factory to a vapid whore too bored to even fake it. How else can you explain that whatever passes for �journalism� in Mother Tribune�s 78-page magazine consists of one brief feature story about a relatively unremarkable New York DJ visiting South Beach? Which is a whole other metaphor a lot darker than poor old Alan Cherry's sad swan song.
