Noir Side of the Sunshine State Awards

Two events to plug this morning. First comes "The Noir Side of the Sun" on Thursday evening in Miami. It's a celebration of crime writing courtesy of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Here's the info:

The Noir Side of the Sun: Crimes, Mysteries, and Thrillers--Miami Style Thursday, May 22, 6:30 p.m. Soya e Pomodoro, 120 N.E. 1st St., Miami

Set amid the sultry bohemian atmosphere inside Soya, The Noir Side of the Sun: Crimes, Mysteries and Thrillers, Miami Style, will feature some of the area’s most talented crime and mystery writers, including Lynne Barrett, James O. Born, Edna Buchanan, Vicki Hendricks, Paul Levine, Bob Williamson, and crime newsreporter Bob Norman. In addition to exploring the dark side of literature through readings and discussion, the restaurant will be open for dinner, offering wine and beer.

For more information about this event, please call 305-237-3940, for visit the FCLA website at www.flcenterlitarts.com.

That's right, Edna Buchanan will be there, along with a bunch of other beloved novelists and the Pulpman himself (I'll be reading from my little book, which you should of course purchase immediately if you haven't yet). I'm thinking about reading some stuff about Georgia Roberts, the manic soccer mom who was arrested (but not convicted) for stalking Channel 10's Kristi Krueger a few years back.

Also, the Sunshine State Award banquet is NEXT Saturday evening, May 31, at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel. So if you're nominated for an award (or not), get your newspaper to put you up for the dinner and talk. This year's speakers are San Francisco Chronicle reporters Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru Wada, who exposed the BALCO steroid scandal.
