American Lawyer Media Lays Off 42

Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 10:18:46 AM

American Lawyer Media, which owns The American Lawyer magazine and 12 newspapers nationwide, announced last week in a memo from CEO William L. Pollak to staff that it is laying off 42 employees nationwide, which amounts to about four percent of its workforce.

Locally, the only employee that was terminated was Miami Daily Business Review editorial assistant Sergy Odiduro, nee Tabuteau, who also happens to be an officer in the local chapter of Society of Professional Journalists.

Great, fire an employee at the bottom of the ladder who also happens to be someone who volunteers for the good of journalism. And a minority and new mother, as well. This from company that publishes The Minority Law Journal and often criticizes law firms for failing to hire minorities. Way to keep our dim view of the values of corporate America alive and well, ALM.

Sergy is one of the most thoughtful, helpful and enthusiastic journalists I've ever worked with.
Shame.
What a business this is.

I feel bad for Ms. Odiduro and don't doubt she was a great journalist, but suggesting that her skin color should have been a factor in whether or not to lay her off is, I think, a disservice to other journalists of color who want to be treated fairly and equally by management and don't want to be handled differently by corporate management just because of their skin color.

It's tough being black in a predominately white industry, and fostering the perception that blacks are, or should be, cut breaks because of skin color just makes things harder. I realize that wasn't your intention and that race was only one of your points in Ms. Odiduro's defense, but it's a concern nonetheless.

No comments on the resignation of Laura Seidman. For someone who was on the puse of corruption at Broward Health you apppear to have given a pass on ole Mrs. Seidman. Not a mention of her continuing to givin out work to Conrad Scherer after they were dumped. Loading up Tripp Scott and other firms tied to the JNC when her husbad was trying to go to Circuit. Too bad you had done such a good job on exposing Broward Health corruption in the past.

Hello.....

Bob or John Degroot looks like the Sentinal scooped you on the Seidman thing. Interesting that you guys were always ahead of the curve on corruption over there but some how covered up for Seidman, whats up with that?

Sergy Odiduro says:

It was unfortunate that I was affected by the layoffs. However, Eddie Dominguez, my former manager, made it a point to strive for diversity in the newsroom.
