It's True: People Are Stupid

Thu Sep 20, 2007 at 09:25:38 AM

It's not like there's nothing going on at all around here (apartment buildings are exploding in fireballs, for one) but I thought I'd steer you over to an interesting civics test which the majority of college seniors in this country fail miserably.

It's called the American Civic Literacy Test and it was produced by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. It was given to 14,000 students at 50 universities. Here's the summarized findings:

College seniors know astoundingly little about America’s history, political thought, market economy and international relations.

The overall average score for the approximately 7,000 seniors who took the American civic literacy exam was 54.2%, an “F.” That is consistent with the overall average of 53.2% posted by seniors last year. Not one college surveyed can boast that its seniors scored, on average, even a “C” in American civic knowledge.

Harvard seniors scored highest, but their overall average was 69.6%, a “D+.” That is almost identical to the 69.7% earned by Harvard seniors last year. Yale and Princeton seniors averaged only 65.9% and 61.9%, respectively. At 18 colleges, the average senior scored less than 50%.

University of Florida seniors performed dismally, with an average score of 53.4 percent, slightly below the national average for seniors. Even the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia outperformed the Gators, with an average score of 57.76.

This is part of the reason why local governments can get away with so much -- citizenship has gone to hell in this country. But here's the fun part: You can click here to take the test. Actually it's not so fun; it's a pretty challenging little bugger. (Though there's no excuse for failing it). After Ross Shulmister, the editor of The Sentry in Pompano Beach, alerted me to the test in an email, I took it. My score was better than the average Harvard senior, but it still wasn't good enough to brag about here.* All I can say is, don't rush through it like I did, because you'll make stupid mistakes that will haunt you for the rest of your life.

I love what the ISI is doing. If you want to support them, click here and help keep it going.

*All right, I got 12 wrong for an 80. But you have to understand, I took it late at night, slightly buzzed, wanting to climb in bed, and having no idea I was going to have to post this and be obliged to post my humiliating score online. Hey, don't roll your eyes. Seriously! I'M NOT THAT STUPID!!!

Good news/bad news.
Good news: beat out Yale and Harvard.
Bad news: Didn't ace it.
Hope my score will bode well for my own under- and grad- institutions (Barnard/Columbia and NYU)

You answered 42 out of 60 correctly — 70.00 %

I was not educated in this country and arrived when 40 years old, but still got 86%. I believe with some education, I am an enginner and we are not supposed to know a lot about civics, and common sense at least a passing grade should be achieved.

I missed three, score: 95. What's my prize?

I got a C. That stands for cool. He he he.

Dan says:

missed four.

You got an 80? God, Pulp, you are just sad.

Don't use that excuse, Bob . . . most college students who took the test undoubtedly "took it late at night, slightly buzzed, wanting to climb in bed . . . "

Anonymous says:

i would expect 95% of the american population to fail this test.

Pulp says:

Okay, Dan I can take. After countless political conversations and rants with him in fine drinking establishments, many of them more than half-buzzed, I know he's got near-encyclopedic knowledge of American history. When it comes to political trivia, I know plenty, but he's aces.

But you, Gator? You're living proof that recall of facts and figures hasn't a whit to do with logic and good sense. Even in the comment above, you veer off into no-man's land. You wrote:

"most college students who took the test undoubtedly 'took it late at night, slightly buzzed, wanting to climb in bed . . . '"

Not only did you not accurately quote me, but you're wrong. Obviously, the college students didn't take the test under those conditions. What kind of a study would that be?

Just to make sure, I went to the website, which says the "study was undertaken using the in-person, pen-and-paper methodology." Think the ISI people were in the dorm rooms with the students taking turns on the bong at midnight?

I own you, Gator. And ain't no political geek test gonna change that.

aboveaverage says:

I'd brag that I tied Pulp (48 of 60), but I took the test sober and in broad daylight. Areas requiring immediate personal improvement: the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Andrew Johnson v. Radical Republicans, Plato's 'Republic', origins of judicial review, John Locke, the establishment clause, Edmund Burke, the Monroe Doctrine, just-war theory, the law of demand, federal bond purchasing and Social Security spending.

Other than that, I'm, like, all-knowing.

Gator says:

Hmmmmm . . . a bit defensive in tone, Bob, but maybe you haven't caught up on your sleep.

Lay down on the couch and snooze for a couple hours. When you wake up, I think you'll realize that I was joking (although plenty of college students don't have to be in their dorm late at night to be "slightly buzzed").

You might, however, want to catch a few programs on C-Span this weekend. They may be just the ticket to get you up to speed.

Pulp says:

i'm never caught up on my sleep
