Are There Really More Pain Clinics in Broward Than McDonald's?

Among the statistics about pain clinics: a new one opens here every three days; doctors in Broward alone dispense nearly 10 million oxycodone pills a year; more than half of the illegal prescription pills in the country come from South Florida.

But this weekend's debate between Democratic attorney general candidates in St. Petersburg gave us a new one. When the topic of pill mills came up, State Sen. Dave Aronberg of Greenacres said there are "more pain clinics in Broward County than McDonald's."

The comparison between the pill dispensaries and the fast food dispensaries was an interesting one. More important, though, we wondered if Aronberg was right.

After dozens of phone calls and hours of research, it turns out that finding the exact number of pill mills in Broward is impossible. First, it depends on your definition of a "pill mill." The pain management clinics in South Florida range from legitimate medical business targeting specific patients suffering chronic pain to junkie-friendly, low-rent operations. Second, a lot of these clinics open and shut down quickly, only to reopen at a new location. Third, and most important, there is little government regulation of the industry, no agency responsible for tracking the businesses.

So how many pain clinics are there?

"Too many to count," says Kimberly Maroe, a Broward County spokesperson. The county and the 31 municipalities in Broward have no way to track such a statistic. Though the clinics require an occupational license from both the county and the state, the license for a pill mill is the same as a doctor's office or pharmacy.

Mike Jachles, a representative of the Broward Sheriff's Office, which operates a task force that focuses on prescription pills, says the number is "at least 80," though that number doesn't take into account clinics in areas the BSO doesn't oversee. He also joked that to get an accurate number, he needed to "go count all the ads in New Times." In last week's issue, there were 49 ads promoting pain clinics with phone numbers in the 954 area code.

Last year, a grand jury investigation led by State Attorney Michael J. Satz began looking into the proliferation of pain clinics in South Florida. In the first six months of 2008, 18 of the 25 top oxycodone-dispensing doctors were in Broward County. In the last six months of that year, Broward doctors prescribed 6.5 million pills of the incredibly powerful opioid, according to a report from Satz's office. That's nearly three pills for every man, woman, and child in the county. That year, oxycodone-related deaths in Broward went up 23 percent. In 2009, all 50 of the top oxy-prescribing doctors were in Florida, with 33 of those in Broward alone.

At the beginning of 2007, there were four pain clinics in Broward, according to the state attorney's report. In 2008, there were 47. In May of 2009, the most recent count, the total was 115. Many estimates put the current number at around 150 clinics in Broward.

The number of McDonald's restaurants is a bit easier to find. A search of the yellow pages shows 71 McDonald's locations within the county limits. That means that not only was Dave Aronberg right, but Broward could have twice as many pain pill dispensaries as McNugget dispensaries. In fact, the county has more pain clinics than McDonald's and Walmarts (21) combined.

There are perhaps three times as many clinics as Starbucks (47).

There are about six times as many pain clinics as public parks in Broward (24).

There are more pill mills than public high schools (33) or middle schools (43), and probably more than public elementary schools (138).

Then there's this: In 2008, the Florida Medical Examiners Commission reported 3,750 deaths from fatal overdoses of prescription drugs (three times more than heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and all hallucinogens combined). Another 1,174 people died "prescription drug-related" deaths that year.

In time, perhaps the pain clinics in Broward will put up some sort of sign recognizing its addicted client base. It could say something along the lines of "MILLIONS AND MILLIONS SERVED."

This is incredible research. Stunning. If Manatees were dying as fast as people in Florida, the entire scientific world would be down here trying to figure out how to stop it immediately.

And Bravo for calling out your own publication. When you're inevitably fired, I hope G_d will provide you with another job that pays more.

Have you walked into a CVS, Walgreens or Publix, lately ?
Their Pharma Dept's have grown to be huge.
They have so many alphabetical slots for the individual prescriptions, that it looks like the Post Office back room of yesteryear.

8 yrs ago yesterday, after warning satz, jds lee, koenig, lee cohen , sam fields, ladstone/weissman and scores of others in this wonderful legal system, lest we forget melon head tommy coleman that my former brother in law was in peril of heroin addiction, lil queer bobbi lee had the raiders knock my door down b/c i defied the lesbian whors koenig who said i could not call my wife of 24 yrs b/c she did not want to talk.lidten to me renee goldenberg, thats is not what the law/constitution nor any of all dca's say is the threshold. yea renenn, i'm talking to you as koo koo koenig flew rhe nest. now, renee you have to realize i am totally unimpressed mike bolton waved at your fat face. what concerns me is 8 years ago, the whole legal system shunned me when i begged for assistance for CHRISTOPHER PAUL FAST"s addiction to multiple pain meds. as a matter of fact, i was laughed at. my mother in law tok her limited funds and went to ethiopia w/ the fancy krupniks, my soon yto be ex was going on some excursion w/ her male slut of the week. my father in law told me his son was not an addict, just had pain from the cancer he was lucky to be in the 10% that survived osteo genic sarcoma at the time. oh , thats right, i raised along w/ margie helmholdt 26k b/c my dad in law who billed himself as fl's biggest ins agent had no ins. 8yrs ago yesterday, after carrying chris from a bar totally oxy'd out to atlantic shores for detox, satz, tommy coleman, lil bobette lee had me arrested. 60 days later on 3/1/02 chris fast died of an od while his mom was partying w/ the krupnicks, his sister was deep into her second bottle of wine and his dad was passed out drunk as he was every night. and mike satz/tommy coleman could care less. that was when there were 4 pain clinics in broward, there are now 166.and our dear mayor seler told me 3 yrs ago he was sponsoring legislation to stop these abuses. but he and his wife play tennis w/ some of the biggest abusers of this system of death that people drive from ky, wv, tn etc to get their drugs.so on today, the day we laid chris o rest, w/ people including his dad hugging me saying, "why did we not listen to you"its still the same question. let me say it as clearly as i can, MIKE SATZ, TOMMY COLEMAN[ who by the way his in laws suffered the same tragedy w/ a fine young son}AL LAMBERTI, FLPD, and on and on not doing a damn thing about it. are they at bova too much? anyway, 8 yrs, a young mans death that the taxpayers paid to save fro a virulent bone cancer, just ate a handful of illegally gotten pills and did not wake up. and that was dr shopping w/ only 4 pain clinics and satz/coleman/lamberti/seiler has let them grow to 166. and we pay thier salaries, better healthcare than 99% of us hve and pensions we'll never have. if i had the energy i'd give you all the names of people that od'd after my warning to bobette lee, geoff cohen, satz, jenne et al. as long as i'm alive i will remind you of chris' death that his mom/dad/sister could have prevented but for the sake of some stupid civil inj that an ugly, mean spirited lesbian jd issued to be a tough judge. I was born with Intractable pain secondary to spina bifida, stenosis, osteoarthritis, spondylosis, & more. I have suffered all my from under-medication. 75% of IP patients are under-medicated. This is due to the well founded fear that federal agents can come into a doctors office on mere suspicion & shut down their operation for up to 3 months & the doctor has to pay for the investigation, even if no wrong doing is found. Plus, doctor loses months of income & customers. Why do we really have so many pain management clinics in Florida? Because we have a massive elderly population & the longer you live the greater the likelihood you'll need pain medications. It's one thing to go after doctors you're sure are guilty. But, it's way too common to see completely compliant doctors with excellent documentation of their patients conditions & urine tests on file being made an example off. I have every documentation & my doctor is scared to death, even knowing he's following the rules. Doctors are rapidly being scared off many patients have to drive 90 miles one way to get to the remaining ones. Now Medicare prescription providers are cutting back on the pain meds they're willing to cover. Patients are living in agony due to the oppression. There's always two sides to every story. I'm 53, my under medicated intractable pain has aged me so much that people think I'm 75. That's due to the terrible damage that IP does when not treated properly. Wise up, this is just one more power grab to control people & trample on their civil rights. God forbid that any of you who don't have IP eventually need proper care. Because, you probably won't get it 7 living in sever pain all day is not living at all. It's agony. Get a little compassion & educate yourselves. My condition is genetic & Untreated IP can actually kill people. My mother was so under medicated the stress actually killed her. There are organizations being formed by pain patients who have fully documented diseases & I'd encourage true pain patients to join now. People like me never asked to have these problems. Ever felt the same way about your problems? How do you feel if you're being unfairly persecuted? Just closing clinics is unfair & Un-American in it's prejudiced discrimination. The majority of pain management doctors are honest, hard working professionals who perform an extremely important service. Please, read 'The Intractable Pain Patient's Survival Guide'. Or, just go along with these heartless oppressors & pray you never need pain relief.

Just so everyone knows...there were not any deaths last year (or ever) from an overdose of marijuana, so that should not have been included on that list of combined fatal overdoses.

A country where these law makers and control freaks were sitting in jail and rotting would be called a free country.

We've always had problems with them since the beginning of time. They've always made laws that only help themselves gain more power to suppress the common people and benefit only the big industries.

Nothing will change for the better if this group is not extinct. And it might take a revolution to bring about such outcomes.

We did it with the British.

Do you remember how it was done?

These brave souls had split up in the battleground and individually took it upon themselves to rid the American soil of the epidemic that had taken their freedom.

But since then, it seems that too many of the common sheep had become complacent.

This country seems to be made up of Pimps and Prostitutes. Where by the Pimps keep changing the rules while the Prostitutes keep lining up in the voting booths to cast their meaningless votes in hopes that their chosen statesmen (pimps) might change things for the poor, dumb and gullible sheep.

AL says:

Sometimes I wonder why other people care soooooo much when junkies die. I mean I hope they went in bliss to the other side and hopefully met Jesus and not Luci....

But why all the cry's for stricter laws to prevent this from happening?

Unless - we might need them(junkies) to help pay the taxes to fund the statesmen(pimps) in office, or maybe they could be used as propaganda to give the sheep(you) more reason to give up more of your, already, diminishing rights.... Which seems to be working.

This is a dilemma. More pain clinics than McDonalds. Which, by product line, does more damage to the general public? I will guess, there are more obese, nutritionally deficient, diet induced sickling ADD inflicted Big Mac munchers than pain pill addicts, but maybe they cater to the same audience. McDonalds is acceptable and pain clinics are not. Why is that? Happy Meal or Oxycodone? Pick your poison.

chronic sufferer says:

i suffer from chronic pain, i am never pain free, i have tried everything, before having to go see a pain management dr. I use my medication as prescribed, i do not ABUSE my meds, the medication helps me have a semi-nornal life. the medication allows me to function.
I think that making a blanket statement about pain centers being bad is wrong, yes, some are really bad, they over prescribe, they sell to out of state clients, some even say no id required, which is frightening, they dont even know if these people are over 18 by not having id, or where they are from, of if that is even their real name. (this has to be stopped) but to just close the doors to these centers is wrong, I WILL HAVE NO LIFE WHATSOEVER IF I DO NOT HAVE MY MEDICATION!
I refuse to be labeled a "bad" person, because i am taking pain meds, everyone reading this is ONE CAR ACCIDENT OR ONE SLIP AND FALL AWAY FROM LIVING IN MY SHOES, I WISH THIS ON NO ONE, i have exhausted every single option, from accupuncture to bee stings, to physical therapy, to every single cream and ointment that is sold, all supplements saying they will help i have tried, NOTHING WORKED. This is my only option, this is my life and i deserve to have pain medication if my dr. agrees that i need it.yes i agree that dr shopping has to be stopped, out of state people need to be stopped, dr's that are in it just for money, who dont follow the rules and laws already on the book need to be stopped. closing down distributers is not the solution, we have laws already, they just need to be enforced, i am in favor of the database, that will weed out any people that abuse the system. Many people have no other option than pain medication, I am in my 50's and have had serious injuries that have caused my chronic pain, I have no other choice to live a semi normal life than to take pain meds. Please do not judge everyone that is in chronic pain and takes pain pills, we come from all walks of life, and please dont group or compare us with anyone that would abuse these medicines. I feel that i am fighting for my quality of life, if my pain management clinic is closed, i will be unable to function. The dr's and owner of the center i go to, refuse all out of state clients, you have to have medical records showing that these medications are necessary, anyone that shows up looking "high" is refused and asked to not return. They have followed all the rules, and it isnt fair that they are labeled bad like some of the clients that dont follow the rules.

How can you get cheap airline tickets for flying on New Years Eve? Me and my boyfriend want to go on a spur of the moment trip to Florida to see his buddy and be in the sun for a few days. We dont have money to purchase tickets until probably the day after christmas. Being a week away, will ticket prices keep going up from where they are now (around 400/ticket) or will they decrease to try to get seats sold??
