Tiger Woods' Boat Never Left Dock in Palm Beach, Sources Say

Photographer Ralph Notaro says he shot this photo yesterday of Woods' boat at its dock, where it has been for weeks.

By now you've probably heard that Tiger Woods set sail on his boat Privacy from its dock in North Palm Beach, likely hoping to put all those headlines about his affairs in his wake. But two journalists who have been staking out the boat say it never happened. And People magazine, which initially broke the story, has declined to retract the story.

Ralph Notaro, a photographer from Coral Springs, says he has spent the past 12 days on a stakeout near the port where Privacy is docked. Notaro rented a boat
December 12 that he anchored right behind Privacy, hoping to get a glimpse of Woods.

People magazine reported on its website that Woods and a group of buddies took off on Privacy on December 19. The story quoted a source that claimed they had even stocked up on provisions at Costco on Northlake Boulevard.

But Notaro was in his boat behind Privacy on that day and said it never moved. The day Woods allegedly set sail was a stormy one, and Notaro recalls riding out the waves on his rented boat.

Notaro says he called People's office December 21 to let them know that they got it wrong.

"They told me, 'Oh, OK, we'll forward that information to our editors," he said. He hasn't heard back from the magazine.

Lisa Lucas also says she's been staking out the boat almost daily. Lucas is a freelance writer working for the New York Daily News and said she was there the day that Woods supposedly took Privacy out. Lucas called People and said she talked with the author of the article, Linda Marx, who said she witnessed the boat leaving herself.

"There is no way that boat left that morning," Lucas says. She did see it go out for a two-hour trip on another day, but not with Woods aboard.

Lucas has worked as a journalist for four years, writing for the New York Post, Boca Magazine, and Closer magazine. She now contributes regularly to the Daily News.

Notaro, a Florida Atlantic University grad, says he's been working in the business for 11 years, shooting mostly celebrity and sports photos that have earned him as much as $60,000 a pop. His most recognizable photos, he says, are photos of Jessica Simpson after she had gained weight and the last photos of Anna Nicole Smith alive. He says he spoke up about the inaccurate story because he thought People ought to have corrected it.

"The whole thing kind of pissed me off," he says. "That People magazine wouldn't correct this thing, it's just wrong."

A woman who answered the phone at People's media relations office said she would page a spokesperson. But New Times has not received a call back. A note seeking comment sent to People's editorial contact generated an automated response that read in part:

"If you have challenged a fact that was presented in PEOPLE, your letter will be routed to our Chief of Research, investigated, and you will receive a written response at a later date."

Bob Markey II says:

That boat definitely did leave its North Palm Beach dock during the last week or two. A friend of mine who lives in the Marina Grande at the northwest side of the Blue Heron Blvd. bridge has a photo he made, from his balcony, of the Privacy returning north toward its berth from the Peanut Island (or perhaps ocean?) area.

I have seen the photo.

As for the staking out of Tiger's boat: A little creepy, folks. At what point do journalists become paparazzi?

Sports News says:

What a decade for Tiger Woods!
He began the decade at the age of 22, a kind of prodigy or genius, an untouchable golf god, born to this mortal world to show us how to play the game. He almost ended the decade in the same vein at the age of 32, becoming the top PGA earner of 2009, then… Well, Woods crashed and so did his entire reputation. He will now be remembered as a tainted genius, a flawed character, not a golf wonderkid. Sports bloggers listed at online ,(DozenSports.com) are debating whether Tiger Woods should be remembered as the greatest sportsman of the decade or not. I say, he blew it.

At least I have the guts to put my name to what I post, you sorry, scared little creep. Grow some and identify yourself. Then you might be taken just a bit more seriously.

BTW, I now have the original photo of Privacy, made just after it passed under the Blue Heron Bridge, moving north toward its dock. The photo was made around 10 a.m. Dec. 15.

>>"There is no way that boat left that morning," Lucas says. She did see it go out for a two-hour trip four days later, but not with Woods aboard.

Perhaps the writer meant .. "four days earlier," because four days after Dec. 19 (the alleged Tiger trip) would have put the confirmed trip on the day this New Times article was published.

Markey is just trying to discredit Notaro, probably due in part to some resentment over shooting photos of FAU’s athletic department. Even though the “official” photographers for the Owls are Notaro and JC Ridley, Markey constantly complains about them and cries to whomever will listen whenever they get in his way. Markey thinks they “have an unfair advantage” because they use professional lenses and he doesn’t. Markey wasn’t even there - he’s basing his argument on the story of a friend of his; since he has such a sense of entitlement and thinks he’s always right no matter what, I’m sure he thinks his friends are infallible too - no matter what evidence is presented. Add that to the successes that Notaro and any one else “in his way” have had and you have one miserable “wanna be” photographer who will always take a cheap shot at someone’s credibility.

Ralph says:

Bob
Quit trying to make something out of nothing. No one ever said that the boat did not leave the dock on the 15th, and I have photos and videos to prove it did. It never left the port and did not make it out to sea. The People magazine article in question claims that the boat left the port on the 19th and had sailed to the Bahamas. This is what is not true. I have photos and videos of this boat every day since the 12th, at the dock where the crew has been prepping for a voyage. I even have video of one crew member stating that she ran well when taken out on the 15th. That video was submitted and ran on almost every celebrity news show the following day. So again, no one is claiming it did not leave the dock that day. As for what Lucas said, "There is no way that the boat left that morning", she too is referring to the 19th. If you would read the whole story you would know that, but like the People mag reporter you are not properly sourcing your info. No where in Eric's story does he mention the 15th, he refers to the People magazine article and that article clearly states they are talking about the 19th. Eric also states that the yacht left the dock for a couple hours days before the day in question. So what new info do you bring to this? NONE! So why do you keep bringing up the 15th? And why do you keep trying to make something out of nothing?

Hey Anonymous:

You don't deserve the response, but ...

The only person I have complained to about Notaro is Notaro, to his face. He knows now that courtesy while shooting an event is expected of me.

He is a good photographer, despite the fact that he and his partner at times tend to think they are made of glass.

As for his subject matter, documenting a celebrity's weight gain for a some nice coin is one of the reasons journalists get a bad rap.

And I don't shoot for FAU (never sought that business), although the sports information department and teams request photos from me every season. Hmmm.

And despite the fact that lenses do not make the photographer, I am satisfied with every one of mine. And they look remarkably like those carried by most of the people around me.

You, too, are a gutless little anonymous troll.

JC Ridley says:

Markey, you yelled at me a few years ago for being in your way when I was shooting a “grip ‘n grin” assignment at halftime of a FAU football game. You had no right whatsoever to do so.

You have also complained to FAU’s SID department about Ralph and/or I being in your way while shooting said assignments.

I do agree with you on one point. Lenses do not make a photographer, even when your primary lens (a 70-200 f2.8) that weighs only three and a half pounds is needlessly placed on a monopod.

Ridley: When you and your paparazzo cohort you are unprofessional and inconsiderate enough to step into the path of other people trying to do their jobs (using your expensive super-wide angle lenses), and refuse to move throughout the photo opportunity, you are lucky to only be yelled at. Shooters with less control than me have yanked those who dared to do that in other situations.

Learn some courtesy and have some respect for those around you and you won't have to worry about any criticism.

Enjoy your big, expensive lens. I'm sure you could not live without it.
