What Is a Social Media Expert Anyway?

There is nothing magical to social media

Five minutes looking at marketing information on the internet or attending any tech conference will tell you that the latest craze in "instant gurus" is to title yourself a "social media expert." Anyone can do it. Just start using the term and vaguely talking about social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Maybe throw in some phrases like "leveraging your marketability" and "strategizing your networks" and... BAM! Instant Social Media Expert!

Then add the title to your business cards, get a bot or two to upsize your Twitter account with followers by the thousands (who cares if they're other bots?), and you're on the way to the top, baby! The bigger your numbers, the bigger your cred. One tech writer, on a blog called Pulse2, who has lost credibility with me, recently published a list of 100 Social Media Experts to follow on Twitter and even calls MC Hammer an expert? Even my account almost has sent as many tweets as him. If even those who are supposed to know about tech make outrageous claims like "follow these people -- they are social media experts," what are the rest of us to think?

That's the gist of how most social media experts build themselves. A few days or a couple of weeks of serious work and you can have everything the facade of a social media expert requires.

"That doesn't mean there aren't real social media folks to hire, of course," says Fort Lauderdale-based Murray Izenwasser. "Just don't take someone's business card or word as proof of their status. There is some great social media talent right here in Florida. Genuine ones, not fakers."

I'm not a social media expert and will never tell you that I am. I have a nice social network, I guess, but you won't hear me telling you how I'm leveraging my marketability or strategizing my networks. Mostly because I'm not even sure what those terms are supposed to mean, let alone how to do it. Is strategizing even a word?

I have met a few good people I would say are experts in social media, though. Gary Vaynerchuk, for instance, is an internet celebrity who hosts the online video blog "Wine Library TV."  He is constantly tweeting. He's built the show, his ability to captivate audiences on social networks, and his very... uhh... robust personality into a huge phenomenon. Yours truly was a guest on one of Gary's episodes, actually. Talking about pizza, of course. Gary, however, wasn't social enough to respond to our email seeking a quote.  @garyvee

Have you heard of Carina K? The singer, who has a new single she's releasing this month, is a social media expert and probably doesn't even know it. She has a huge online fan base, is almost always tweeting and posting to Facebook, and is very active with her fans.
"Well, I don't think I am an expert at social media," says Carina K. "But I do feel a responsibility to answer every post or question that people ask me, and people seem to respect that. Again and again, people say 'Wow, I never expected you to answer me back, none of the other singers/celebrities do.' When someone takes the time to ask me a question or make a comment to me, I feel it's the least I can do to give them a thoughtful answer back. Though, at times, there's no easy way to do it, because I have days where there are a thousand or more messages, I still reply from my computer, from my phone, at home, in the car when someone else is driving, watching TV, in between bites at dinner...  @carinak
You may not have heard of Dean Perrone, but I bet one of your neighbors has. Not that I always agree with his methods, but living in Orlando, Dean is a marketing madman. His Twitter account isn't the biggest one on the planet, and his tweets aren't a constant stream. But you know what? He knows how to leverage and strategize. In real life, not just the faux world of the gurus.

Says Dean: "I think someone who is qualified to help in social media is someone who has it all. They have a presence on all the social sites." He adds: "Having a bunch of followers doesn't make someone an expert." @DeanPerrone

Over in Tallahassee, there's a guy named Jesse Newhart. No doubt, you are a fan of his multimedia artistry. If you aren't, you will be soon enough. Talent plus the ability to interact well with people online makes you... yep, you guessed it: a social media expert. No bots, no pretending, no bulldookey business cards.  @JesseNewHart

There are more experts than you think. Evan Sneider, who does public relations for a Miami-based website, told me, "Usually, if someone says they're an 'expert' at anything, they aren't. Most 'experts' have no idea that they're exceptionally good at whatever it is they're doing."

Of all people, shouldn't real social media "experts" know the benefit of getting their names mentioned in an article? You can decide for yourself who is and who isn't.

Feel free to tell me I'm an expert at something. Hurry -- the printer has my new biz cards on the press waiting for my update!

Craig, I agree wholeheartedly. If one is truly an expert, his work would speak for himself. He wouldn't need to yell it from the rooftops. But, unfortunately, many gauge their expertise on the number of Twitter followers that they have, and yes--bots DO count!

Quality not Quantity, FOLKS!!

Haha this article cracks me up! I was thinking of blogging about the same exact thing and you beat me to the punch! It's time that people stop trying to proclaim that they're experts and actually dig deep into the subject - maybe then they can figure out how to be successful at it.

I saw the list you mentioned with MC Hammer as a social media expert and had a good laugh from it. Sometimes posts that are supposed to provide knowledge are nothing more then entertainment, but part of what's great about social media is freedom of opinion. You just have to be wary of which opinions you place value in.

Great article, to many people in all fields claim to be experts. Self proclaimed experts also reside in design; just because the person knows how to use the program doesn't mean they are a designer. Very well done!

Julio Ricardo Varela says:

This is an AWESOME article. As a company that does this type of work, we make no such claims. We truly believe that social media can make us all "experts." Social media is the great flattener, and the key is to just pick your niche, be transparent, be consistent, and go for it. The bigger issue for companies is that they know they need to do social media, but are starting to realize that it requires times, resources, and money to achieve the results they need. Social media is not easy, and that is the biggest fallacy going. Keep being yourself, be consistent in your posting, and allow a good 6 months to see real results in your goals. Great post!

Steve Latham says:

Glad someone is shining the light on all the social media emperors running around naked!

I think it's important to distinguish between those who are good at using social media for self-promotion vs. those who are good at helping others use social media as a strategic marketing channel. Too many think they are the same thing.

Great players are not always great coaches. The best way to tell the difference (self-promoter vs. consultant) is by asking for references of companies they've served, and what kind of results they produced for them. If their response is "have you seen how many followers I have?" you will have your answer.

James D Kirk says:

I am reminded back in the very earliest days of the World Wide Web when the term "Web Master" was bandied about the very same way that "Social Media Expert" is now. Even though most who knew me would have called me a web master, I always shied away from it. Less from ego, and more from perspective of just knowing that I could never know enough to have mastered that space.

Same goes now with Social Media Expert. I'm trying to get myself an interview with Vidli.com to be their SME and if it happens that I'm fortunate enough to get the gig, I'll ask that we change the name to something with a bit more meaning. Like Social Media Apprentice (or some such!)

A social media expert is basically a prostitute. I thought of hiring one to whore my blog out on the interwebs but then realized I'd rather pay myself to do my own whoring. It feels less dirty that way.

Great piece!!! Having worked at one time in politics, this world of Bull shit "Gurus" is not exclusive to the private industry.

Heck I started http://twitter.com/IRLBack2Pocono to start a grass roots effort, lobbying for a return of IndyCar series racing to the local Raceway.

I have less than 50 followers, yet I was featured in a local newspaper story just a month into it.

I'm not expert, but I did take a class on Public Relations when I was 19. (Hence I call "Press Releases" Inverted Pyramids)

If you do call me a "Guru to follow" please, can I have my own type of pants? I promise, Spike, won't hurt them!

MC Hammer? Really? Locally, the band @GoPalo rocks twitter and FB keeping fans updated about shows and interacting and engaging fans. Steve, on keyboards and I also the fingers behind the tweets and updates is FAR MORE of an expert on music-related social media than MC friggin' Hammer. Of course, he's such a pro, he teaches it on the college level. "You can't touch this" expertise.

Nationally, the band @collective_soul is hands down amazing. When they get done with touring, they should give talks about keeping up a national and international fanbase while being "real".

Great article!

This article is GREAT! Although I DO help companies determine social media strategies, saying you're a social media expert is akin to saying you're a telephone expert!!!!! Social media acts as a many- to-many channel - the key is having a few goals (the strategery part has to do with the goals being aligned with business goals - whether it's operational, marketing-related, or just better online visibility) knowing what you want to say and when (we call this an editorial calendar) and then learning about the good, bad and the risks of each channel- send your messages, then rinse and repeat. That's it! Now you are a social media expert!

Deb J. Jones says:

I think a lot of the problem is that now that the Internet is mainstream, everyone thinks they are a marketing expert. Put your money where your mouth is. If you think your number of Twitter followers makes you an expert, that shows just how much of a novice you are. It's translating followers into results that makes an expert. And the kind of prospective customers who are impressed with follower counts aren't going to do much for your credibility, either.

Instead of putting a label on yourself, try engaging in smart conversations and the smart people will find you. The smarter your customers, the more true marketing street cred you will accumulate.

Jay Fowler says:

Labeling yourself as a Social Media Expert is actually Social Media Suicide. Social Media is fickle and changes everyday. No one is an Expert in the field. Now, if someone thinks you are an expert at it, that is one thing. I would agree and call Gary V an expert. The man kicks it into full gear with everything he does.
Calling your self an expert would cause other players in Social Media to point and laugh.I hate to use a meme in a comment thread but "ORLY?" an Expert you say? It gives off an air of cockiness and arrogance that people do not appreciate.
In Social Media the more outreach and engagement with your audience and fellow players in Social Media is what gives you your ranking. It is up to a community to decide weather or not they think you an expert or a failure. Just my $.02.
Great Article

'Tis much ado about nothing, don't you think?

What are the consequences of this phenomenon, though? From what I've seen, the combined proliferation of over-eager social media experts with neophyte prospective clients leads to a lot of pro-bono business development or spec work that's bound to disappoint both parties.

Claire Thompson (claireatwaves) says:

Having hoiked around endless conferences and events in search of advice from 'experts' on the tools and case studies to stimulate creativity and discussion, I found it at last in a non-social media conference - the Everywoman Conference.

I expected it to be a bit passe - but the women speaking about how they grew their businesses without exception had used social media to grow and find new suppliers, staff or customers. And they were happy to share the details, unlike the people who charge for that service (even if you've paid for the conference - unless, of course, they're suppliers)

There's the real experts....

"Just don't take someone's business card or word as proof of their status. There is some great social media talent right here in Florida. Genuine ones, not fakers."

In the words of Neil Diamond... "Hell yeah there is..." so much great talent out there . People that are good with people, these jobs that are taken up by some of these "experts" that are more focused on making money for themselves than the companies.

When it all boils down to it, these "experts" can sure talk a lot but when it comes to actually having a personable conversation with others... most people would rather just talk to robot then get flooded with advertisements and pitches.

Finally.. an honest article on social media experts, thank you.

We certainly need more social media superheroes than experts.. people who make social media a helpful tool for great causes... like @alyssa_milano

Thank you..

Honestly, how much of an expert can anyone possibly be? Social media is a relatively new phenomenon, and even if you've been involved in it from its beginnings, it's changing very quickly.
Also, I'm not sure the metrics you suggest (e.g. number of followers, tweets, etc.) are any real indication of whether someone is an expert or not, far less whether they offer any value as an advisor.

Great article Craig, I could not agree with you more. As soon as someone declares they are an expert and know EVERYTHING, it is almost like saying, "I know everything and therefore can learn no more." In in case, you have to continue to learn to be the top of your field and in the case of social media...even more so as it is changing so much. Well you will notice that Carina K doesnt label herself as a social media expert, But having chatted to her extensively on Twitter & various other social forums its clear that she is one. She is unnasuming in her professionalism but has a large fanbase which grows constantly because of the way she interacts with her myriads of followers, sharing hobbies interests & her amazing vocal talent. Carina remains with her feet firmly planted on the ground and is never aloof as some superstars become & as sure as my name is Mike Carina will attain the tite Superstar as she already holds the rank of social media guru even if she is reluctant to acknowlege it.
