It's been almost 20 years since the notorious "Bangkok Six" incident, when investigators at a Thailand airport intercepted a crate marked "live birds," only to find that it contained six tightly-packed endangered orangutans destined for Russia from Indonesia. Only two of the orangutans survived.

A Miami primate dealer named Matthew Block -- proprietor of World Wide Primates, who'd started his business of raising animals for research while still in high school -- eventually pled guilty to charges for his role in the case, paid a $30,000 fine, and was sentenced to 13 months in prison. He then began cooperating with authorities, working as an informant to rope in illegal animal traders. In 1993, he helped arrange the arrest of five Mexican zoo officials who traveled to Miami in hopes of buying a gorilla on the black market. (During that incident, a Fish & Wildlife investigator dressed in an ape suit to fool the zoo guys into a takedown.) Around the same time, he also helped ensnare a Jacksonville dealer who was holding rare Australian cockatoos.

In spite of Block's work on the side of law enforcement, some animal rights activists have never forgiven him or forgotten him, instead engaging in their own form of retaliation. In 1994, 33 crab-eating macaques were stolen from Block's property. Last year, intruders cut holes in several monkey cages, letting the animals escape. And this week, the Animal Liberation Front received a communique that activists targeted a Miami Beach house they believed to belong to Block's wife Brooke. "We punctured 4 tires on a car in the driveway and poured red paint over the car and on the front door of the house," authors of the communique stated.  (Matthew Block, now in his late 40s, is no longer a registered agent for Worldwide Primates; rather, his wife Brooke and mother Gertie are listed officers on the paperwork.)

Matthew Block spoke to New Times briefly, confirming the incident -- and clarifying that the vandals missed their target. The house and car, he says, "belong to my 80-year-old mother.  This is their third time getting it wrong, and one of those was a firebombing a few years ago. They're going to end up killing or hurting someone."

When Block spoke to us last September after intruders released the monkeys, he noted that "These monkeys never lived a day in their lives" out of his company's care. "They have no clue how to behave in the wild. No clue how to get food and water." Block said it was cruel to free them -- to them let them "sit in the wild and starve to death."  Other primate experts said that the animals can be unpredictable and aggressive, and it was fortunate that the released monkeys did not run into and hurt or maim humans.

Records received from the United States Department of Agriculture in response to a Freedom of Information Act request indicate that World Wide Primates has had its license renewed regularly with few violations.  In the years since 2002, inspectors noted a missing tile, a rusted cage, and a note that "In July 2005, non-human primates succumbed to heat exhaustion when HVAC system in Room C failed."  In 2004, investigators noted that an adult male capuchin was housed alone; the law required he be able to see and hear nonhuman primates of his own species.

Perhaps the most revealing detail to be gleaned from the sparse paperwork is that business has been good: In 2003, a year the company bought 319 animals and sold 182, the reported gross income from sales totaled $340,295.  In 2007, when the company bought 1123 animals and sold 1270, that figure peaked at more than $5 million.

Block noted that his company imports animals for research purposes but does not conduct any research. Although his line of work remains a topic for ethical debate, Block in turn argued that "these people [the vandals] do not deserve publicity."  Last year he stated, "ethically, the media should not be giving accolades to people who violate federal law."  He added that in the search for the perpetrators, "the FBI is very much involved."  The agency considers animal rights extremism "domestic terror" and in 2006, revisions to the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act toughened penalties for related crimes.

what this man is doing is abominable. humans do not have the right to steal, breed, enslave, sell, confine, torture, kill non-humans. it is speciesism and the results of it are some of the most heinous aspects of humans behavior. that the law is on this man's side is exactly why "extremists" do what they do. wake up humans from your emotional slumber and connect with the suffering you condone and defend. wake up.

Block should make a substantial donation to orangutan conservation to pay for his role in the death of those orangutan babies. Blood money or not, he owes them...

Reach out and save the orangutans- don't hurt them!

Block imports animals for research but doesn't do any research himself? So what? The people who captured slaves and brought them to this country did the same thing. They imported slaves and didn't utilize the slaves themselves to pick cotton. What a bunch of specious reasoning.

Slave-traders, orangutan-traders, endangered species traders all profit off of the suffering of others -- there is no difference!

All you have here are a bunch of hoodlums who claim to care about animals but have no problem in releasing them into a strange and unwelcoming environment. Thousands of mink are regularly released by the ALF to starve to death in the wilds that they never knew. It's a fact that animal research saves lives, both human and animal.
All the scientists who work with animal research and endure the terroristic actions of the ALF should be commended. Targeting an eldery woman won't gain you any sympathy. Hope the authorities catch up with this group and that they see the inside of a prison soon.

What Block is doing is immoral but unfortunately not illegal. I don't know how the animals that ALF freed were served by that freedom - they probably met with much danger and suffering, but I would ask Block to cease and desist being an equally obnoxious person in the world.

Paul Zwolle says:

Worldprimate Primates received in Oct. last year 60 squirrel monkeys and 8 cupuchin monkeys from a small business in Paramaribo, Suriname's capital. Especially the nice and little and cuddly squirrel monkeys are very much liked in Suriname, where they live free in nature. It really is a shame that companies like Worldwide Primates still import such monkeys (and others ofcourse) to sell them to vivisection companies, laboraties and universities. The animals are kept in small cages, day in day out. It is painfull and stressfull. The public cannot be made aware of Block's business enough. Animalrights organizations are in their rights to campaign against companies like Block's. However those campaigns should be legal and not threatening.

Yoffit Goldberg says:

Groups like ALF are home grown terrorist cells. As Americans we should be concerned with home grown organizations that promote violence in the name of any cause. Violent acts against anyone, in particular the elderly or children is unacceptable. By condoning acts committed by ALF and other activist groups we are no different than condoning acts committed by the Taliban or other extreme religious groups. The public needs to conduct their own due diligence and form an accurate opinion of what is really happening behind these violent acts. For example, first, these terrorist cells target legitimate businesses worldwide. These acts of violence in recent years have escalated to physical attacks against individuals of the bioresearch industry….including family members and pets. Second, when these attacks occur and security has to be increased, who do you think pays for this in the end? When research for a medical cure has to be halted because the activists are creating havoc…What do you think occurs? The research either stops or is resumed and more money is spent. The end result higher cost for the consumer? Third, animals that are captive breed and released by extremists only create a bigger problem. Animals that are captive breed have never been in the wild and don’t know what to do. This is the equivalent of opening your house door and telling Fluffy to leave. How will they survive? A caretaker has always provided them with food, shelter and attention. The act of releasing animals who are captive breed is inhumane! The release by these activists causes stress to the animals…and can result in other issues with the animals. Finally, the biomedical industry is heavily regulated. The animals being used for research have over three meals a day, medical care, and psychological enrichment, clean living quarters etc. How many of us Americans can say we have medical care, eat three balanced meals a day, exercise and have dedicated staff to care for us? The public needs to know that biomedical research is necessary to create medicines and find cures that will help mankind and even for our beloved pets. As an animal lover, I agree and advocate the ethical and humane treatment of animals and of humans. Biomedical research is extremely necessary. For those, against biomedical research, I hope to God that you or a family member never requires blood pressure medicine, insulin, cancer treatment, an aspirin, HIV cocktails, painkillers, birth control or Viagra and if you should need it, are you ready to reject all medicines and treatments developed using animals?

I wish to comment that since this article seems to target biomedical research…..how about the local companies that promote these terrorist cells either directly or indirectly? For example, locally Sublime Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale? Do you know that PETA is supported by the owner(s) of Sublime, and PETA supports ALF! Our gay community should know…ALF is against biomedical research, hence, no HIV testing or research conducted on primates? The gay community has a loud voice and a lot of financial influence. Why isn’t this reported? How about Whole Foods? They support PETA. PETA is against animal research. Again, no HIV research! Come on people…we need to look at the big picture…..conduct your own due diligence and form realistic opinions. If we are going to retailiate…retailiate against corporations or establishments that support these activists…

Nicoal says:

It is crucial for people to understand that ALF has never killed or hurt one human being or non-human in the whole 30+ years of operation. ALF are not the terrorists, the people who conduct research on animals are! They have the blood their hands, killing billions of animals every year. And for what? Not "science" or progress, but GRANT MONEY. Researchers and animal importers get paid hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars for doing merely the same experiment every time the NIH grants them money, or for selling animals. The article even demonstrates the amount of money that is involved with selling primates.

As for Yoffit Goldberg's comment about ALF against HIV testing...the ALF or any animal rights activist are not fighting against vivisection because they don't want to find a cure for HIV/AIDs, rather we all are against the testing of HIV on animals (as well as other horrendous experiments) for two reasons:

1.) Testing on animals will NEVER find a cure for HIV/AIDs, cancer, etc. It is only prolonging people's sickness. Many HIV and AIDs patients/activists have demanded that vivisectors stop testing on animals and test directly on people with HIV/AIDS. These people who suffer from the disease feel they are dying soon anyway and want to find a cure AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, so maybe if they do not live, then maybe the next person will. Continuing animal experimentation is only prolonging human sickness. This cruel experiments hurts humans and non-humans alike and is not benefiting the name or medicine of "science".

2.) The kinds of experiments animals are subjected to are cruel and unnecessary. The results are extremely flawed and do not reflect any knowledge about what the drug will do in a human. Even after animal testing, there is human drugs trials. THIS IS A TEST, PEOPLE! The first time the drug enters a human body, they have no idea how it will react. Animal testing serves no purpose but to accumulate wealth for the already rich elites of vivisectors.

Sanjay Madhav says:

I am medical doctor and researcher who happens to be in Florida on holiday. ALF has never harmed a human being????

How about the below statement from Jerry Vlasik here in California, who is an ALF spokesperson.

"I don't think you'd have to kill—assassinate--too many vivisectors," Vlasak continued, "before you would see a marked decrease in the amount of vivisection going on. And I think for five lives, ten lives, 15 human lives, we could save a million, two million, ten million non-human lives."

How about the fire bomb placed on the door step of the WRONG HOUSE in Los Angeles that could have exploded with a person or child behind that door.

How about the personal attack on Brian Cass in UK?

Everyone is entitled to their views. They are not entitled to break the law to get them across to others....oh and how about the CEO of Novartis who recently had his vacation home torched and the ashes of his dear mother stolen. Doesn't she deserve to rest in peace?

As Yofit pointed out, these people are nothing more than home grown terrorists who deserve the weight of the law on them. New Times should not be giving them any coverage.

Arnold says:

I think people are losing sight of one thing here- no matter your opionion of the use of animals for research, food, or fur, those uses are all legal!!!! What these activists like ALF do is illegal and there is no discussion about that point. If you don't want animals to be able to be used for research, go lobby your Senator or Congressman to change the law and stop trashing farmers and people trying to make a living in a legal business.

Enid says:

Animals used as research tools merely exisit in terror, pain and loneliness. The depraved acts of cruelty and torture inflicted upon their helpless bodies and minds in research labs would be considered a crime if your neighbor did anything close. The Terrorists are INSIDE the labs, and the exploitors and profiteers are like this compassionless man who provides the victims for "the White Coats". And the supporters of torturing animals in research are worried about "illegal" activities. Slavery WAS legal at one time, and for now, the torture of animals is legal. Does that make it right? NO WAY!

Amy says:

Read "Slaughter of the Innocent", by Hans Ruesch. Best book on vivisection and medical history ever. Available at Amazon, Abebooks, Alibris, et. al. More and more Americans are discovering the profit motive behind vivisection, and the tremedous cost to human (not to mention animal...) lives. Europe is way ahead of us on the use of intelligent alternative methods. Wake up.

Laurella Desborough says:

IF it were possible to discover important scientific information for human health purposes and do so with computer models instead of research animals, wouldn't that be the choice of those "research profiteers" ??
It sure would be a lot less costly working with computer modeling than working with research animals. So, if profits were the only goal, we would not find people using animals in research.

There are simply some cases where ONLY the use of animals is going to provide the information that is needed by the researchers.

I worked at a cancer research lab where hamsters were the research animals. Each animal was named, cared for lovingly and when the time for sacrifice came, the entire staff was in tears...but the work was done.
To say that research animals are mistreated is simply not the rule. There are stringent USDA requirements in place for all research animals under the regulations provided for by the Animal Welfare Act.

These animal rights individuals and organizations simply want attention and IMO they don't even care about the animals because they do things that HARM the animals. I remember the university lab in California where twenty years of study on aging was being conducted, using mice. The animal rights people released the mice, trashed the research materials and thus destroyed 20 years of important research, including causing the deaths of the released DOMESTIC mice. The public is often fooled into believing the outrageous claims of these misguided domestic terrorists... who should be known as LUNATICS.
