Susan Stanton Adjusts to Life as Lake Worth City Manager

Initially, we called new Lake Worth city manager Susan Stanton to ask about rumors -- reported on LakeWorthMedia.com -- that a city engineer named Andres Reyes was forced to resign for insubordination after he tried to save the city $50,000 by doing work in-house rather than pay a contractor.  Stanton said that Reyes is actually still on staff with the city and that the rumor highlighted the problems with independent blogs.  "I never confuse blogs with news," she said breezily.

With Stanton contending that the Reyes incident was a non-issue, we asked how her new job was going -- a subject she had plenty to say about.

One of her first priorities, she said, would be "trying to understand the anger in this community. I don't have a panic switch like I did in my office in Largo, but I've had four people come into my office with -- you know the look -- anger, and contempt and rage, where you go, 'I need to get a  police officer in here!'"  Citizens, she said, have been mad about code enforcement, police issues, and "things that happened ten years ago! Two people I thought were going to have massive strokes!"

The encounters reminded Stanton of a recent evening when she ate something bad and spent the evening vomiting on the floor of IHOP. "I was sitting there on the floor thinking about work, and it was like, there's something toxic in the body. It's gotta come up."  She envisioned hosting a listening forum where citizens can meet her and air their gripes: "Some of the anger people feel has got to be expelled."

So far, Stanton is getting used to playing city manager in a place where "the police and fire departments have been puffed away." (Lake Worth has contracted to have the county deliver those services.)  "Most cities would die before they would give up those two functions!" Stanton said. "I thought it was weird, not a good decision, but that's OK, it's been done." Back in her former city of Largo, Florida, Stanton was accustomed to having a police radio in her personal vehicle and police software on her computer so that she could have a real-time handle on crime and emergencies. Now, she lamented, she'll only get reports two times a year. She'll still oversee about 400 people in six departments, such as leisure services and human resources.

Stanton said she has already ventured down to the newly-opened pier at Lake Worth Beach and saw "people with fishing poles, dropping their strings" into the water. "I'd rather get a scuba tank and a spear gun and be done with it in 20 minutes," she said. "It seems so pedestrian doing it [the first] way."

Lastly, the famously transgendered Stanton said most citizens have given her a warm welcome "with the exception of the nail shop.  It wasn't what they said -- it's what they didn't say.  Very cold, like 'We don't want you here.'  Well, by the time you get your feet and nails done, it's $60!  So I thought, if you don't need the money, I'm gone.  So I left and they're happy and I'm happy.  Everybody's happy."

Ms. Stanton is stepping into a city that is very much divided.Corruption and the "Good Ole Boy" system were the rule in Lake Worth for a long time.City hall had a definite "Circle the Wagons " mentality. I would advise Ms. Stanton not to dismiss all of our blogs. Mr. Coakly's blog kept city hall staff and some previous Commissioners more honest than they wanted to be . Lynn Anderson has a great blog.A little breeze of fresh air has begun to blow through city hall, and I feel confident that under Ms. Stanton , our little breeze will become a full force gale wind ! Also, any business that is stupid enough to alienate their clients will not be in business for very long! Welcome Ms. Stanton,we're glad that you are finally here !

And just for the record, our police services in Lake Worth have improved about 400 percent since the sheriff's department took over. No disrespect to the LW City Police, but the Sheriff's Dept is really doing its job. We call now, we get instant response. Graffiti is cleaned up in a timely way. I even saw two cops ON HORSEBACK patrolling our street not long ago. They're highly visible and I would never want to go back to the old way of doing things.

William Coakley says:

Unfortunately, as reporters often do, this is the worst of reporting I've yet seen.

Instead of publishing the truth you just reported what one person said without checking one single fact, without any background on Lake Worth utilities.

If you were interested in the Truth, why didn't you at least call me instead of letting a new city manager twist you around her thumb? My articles are accurate and I stand by every word.

Andres Reyes was re-hired primarily because lakeworthmedia.com published an investigation which uncovered among many other things, the fact that in a hasty attempt to fire Mr Reyes because he indentified a $50,000 scam ...city staff blatently violated their own rules. Then when they discovered their error they offered him $15,000 to shut him up.

The utility has a long history of wasting taxpayer's money. And because of the injustice done to Mr Reyes and 4 out of 5 commissioners wanted him reinstated, the new city manager was forced to hire him back AFTER he had been forced to resign.

And it doesn't say much for the new city manager that to satisfy the staff mob... rather than get to the bottom of what's going on... she re-hired Reyes only if he consented to disciplinary action for something he did right.

So get your facts straight before printing a one sided op/ed and go after the truth. It better serves the community.

That is true Gail about the Sheriff. I remember Laurence Mcnamara a private citizen painting over graffiti all over town and that wasnt too long ago. The Sheriff seems to be doing a good job in our town. Also, I dont see the bums hanging out in the Cultural Plaza anymore or bothering the merchants like they once did. also there are a few blogs that do a good service in what they write, telling the facts and not acting stupid or photo shopping people for others amusement. Cruel people here.

First, Stanton is not a her, second, isn't it a little unprofessional to be gabbing to press about vomiting, efficient ways to fish and getting your nails done?

Mark A. Parrilla says:

Shelly, How sad it must be to have such a restricting narrow perception of what life is and respecting everyone for who they are. I stand in awe of HER courage! She is more of a lady than some of the women I see and hear spewing their hatred at council meetings or making insipid comments on a blog!

Danielle Marie LaBelle says:

I would like to make the following observation:

Two children, ages 4 and 3, decide that they could use a cookie. After making a make-shift ladder, the 4 yr old assists the 3 yr old up the ladder to open the cupboard where the cookies are known to be in a round cookie jar.

About the time that the 3 yr old makes it to the cookie jar, a parent enters the room and loudly inquires of the children, "what are you doing?"

The 3 year old points a finger toward the 4 yr old holding the ladder-like contraption and the 4 yr old says, "we saw that the cookie jar was about to fall so I sent John-John up to push it back. We decided to check and see just how many cookies we saved from hitting the floor."

This from a 4 yr old, with prompting from a 3 yr old. It seems that we are almost bound to manipulate the truth as another might see it, from a very early age. Perhaps, one might even say that we are "programmed" to do so.

There is no need to expound on this idea here. The truth often is in the eye of the beholder and that can vary as we all know. I live in Volusia County Florida, the "Cook County" of Florida. Here, we would be disappointed if we did not have some form of truth variation in everything that we do and say. It is almost manadatory that one attend a class on that subject least we might all be subject to direct undiluted honesty. Something that for the most part, has not existed in this Country from day one.

With no stretch of the imagination, everyone at one time or another has taken a fact and arrived at a different truth. We just seem to be programmed to behave this way and I for one do not see it changing anytime soon.
