Here's video of Pitbull's recent performance in Istanbul, Turkey, where he's famous, and where he claims he had the album of the year for 2009, "Not 305. Not Miami. Not Dade County. Not none of that shit. Turkey. Pa que sepa. Internacional."

What to Hear in Broward and Palm Beach This Weekend

Thumbnail image for johnralston09.jpg
As usual, there's plenty of music to hear in Broward and Palm Beach this weekend. If you're in the mood for some indie rock AND comedy, you should head out to Propaganda to hear John Ralston, Sweet Bronco, and the Beards of Comedy. If you want your comedy more hard-edged, head out to see Doug Stanhope at Culture Room. Solid Sound Studios hosts their usual ultra-passionate local acts with clever names featuring The Perfect Defect. Finally, you can hear a little celtic rock with Uproot Hootenanny at Tim Finnegan's in Delray.

Saturday, Forever the Sickest Kids, Rocket Summer, Sing it Loud, My Favorite Highway, and Artist vs. Poet are flooding the Culture Room, First October are rocking out at Swampgrass Willys, and the Blues and Americana Showcase of Bands is going on at Pulp Live.

Finally, Sunday you can Jam in the Park at Secret Woods Nature Center, Jam Acoustically Downtown at the Gardens in Palm Beach Gardens, see Caribbean Element at Coyotes Bar in Hollywood, or catch the last day of the Blues and Americana Showcase of Bands at Pulp.

Norwegian Electropop Tart Annie Spinning at LIV Thanksgiving Eve

Annie
Mark this as a must: Annie, who is best known for her tracks "Chewing Gum" and "I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me," will be making a quick stop at LIV in Miami Beach November 25 for a DJ set alongside Ross One and Contra. We'd really like for this to have been a live performance, but let's hope she graces South Florida with her presence some time in 2010 (looking at you Ultra organizers).

The Norwegian singer has just released her wonderfully superb electropop sophomore effort Don't Stop. It picks up where 2004's Anniemal left off, except not as retro-sounding. The album was delayed several times due to label disputes and what not, and despite having released two wonderful singles for the album -- the aforemention "Girlfriend" and the italo-disco track "Anthonio" -- neither was include in the final tracklisting.

But don't fret, the album is still packed with wonderful tracks. Some of our favorites include "Don't Stop," "I Don't Like Your Band," and the lead single "Songs Remind Me of You."

Check out the video for "Songs Remind Me of You" after the jump.

Local DJs Duke It Out On iPhones/iPod Touches Tomorrow Night at Voodoo Lounge

groovemaker.jpg
via groovemaker.com
Can you hear that faint thump? It's the heads of turntable purists smacking their heads against their desks. Still, like it or not, what constitutes "DJing" has forever changed with technology -- it's only a matter of time before somebody figures out how to use the DJ Hero controller in the club. Still, people have been using iPods to DJ since the devices came out, so why not the iPhone and iPod Touch?

Three local DJs -- Chris Domingo, Speechless, and Scratch-D from Dynamix II -- will do just that at Voodoo Lounge tomorrow for the iPDJ Mobile Groove DJ battle. The event is sponsored by IK Multimedia, the club, and Sonoma Wire Works, and is meant to showcase IK's new apps, Groovemaker and FourTrack. Each DJ will face off using the software, before playing their own full sets for the rest of the evening.

Okay, so Groovemaker's tagline might make some purists cringe -- "Everyone's an iPhone DJ with GrooveMaker!" The app comes themed to various genres -- house, hip-hop, techno, drum'n'bass, electro, and "club," whatever that means exactly. Each is loaded with loops and beats you can rearrange, speed up and slow down to create tracks in real time. There are up to eight tracks, and you can change elements as the music plays without a break.

For Crazy Elvis Fans Who Want to Meet His Cousin

TheGenuineElvis.jpg
If you're still reading, author/actress (Seriously. She's on IMDB.) and Elvis's cousin Edie Hand will be at Borders Saturday to sign copies of her latest novellas A Christmas Ride: The Miracle of Lights and The Soldier's Ride. Although those don't have anything to do with Elvis, she has paid homage to the Hillbilly Cat through works like Elvis: Precious Memories, All Cooked Up: Recipes, Memories from Elvis' Friends and Family, and The Genuine Elvis: Photos and Untold Stories About the King, the last of which she described in an interview with the Memphis Flyer:

"Twelve years ago, I worked with the Elvis fan clubs, helping them collaborate on a Presley family and friends cookbook. Then one day, Ronnie and Joe and I were talking about making something new for the fans, and I said, well, I'll check into it. We found a lot of real stories that hadn't been told. Louise Smith hadn't shared her stories with anyone else."

Louise Smith was married to Elvis's other cousin, Gene Smith. While it may seem like Hand's just another relative milking her genetic connection till the bitter end, she actually donates a lot of her profits to various organizations like St. Jude's, Camp Smile-A-Mile, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. She'll be signing books from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Borders, located at 2240 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.

In other South Florida Elvis news: There will be an Alfred Wertheimer photo exhibit in April at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Read more here.

A Blast from the Past: Septeto Nacional at Hoy Como Ayer

If time between shows is any indication, you may have to wait another 76 years to catch Cuba's legendary Septeto Nacional on yanqui shores again.
Sept_Nacional.jpg

The band made its last U.S. appearance at the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago, where it won a Gold Medal by spreading the Afro-Cuban music made popular in the 1930s called "son." That was long before the Buena Vista Social Club, which Ry Cooder made  famous.

Fans of Cuban roots music have what could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to catch the legendary group -- composed of the fourth generation of musicians who've kept the music of its prolific founder and composer Ignacio Pieiro alive.

The band will play two shows at Hoy Como Ayer, a cafe night club on SW 8th Street and 22nd Ave., Saturday, November 21.

"They've never received the recognition they deserve," said Fabio Diaz, one of the nightclub's owners.

Gallows Drops Off AFI Tour, Jonny Craig Fills In

Jonny Craig
On its MySpace page Sunday, English punk band Gallows unfortunately announced it would be canceling the rest of its tour with AFI, explaining:

"We're sorry to announce that we have had to cancel our remaining dates on the AFI tour due to illness. We're sorry to disappoint anyone who bought tickets to see us but make sure you go to the show as AFI are an amazing band and we're so lucky to have spent the last few weeks touring with them."

Dave Hause replaced the band in Myrtle Beach and Atlanta Sunday and Monday. But it looks like Jonny Craig, formerly the vocalist for Dance Gavin Dance, will fill in for the rest of the tour starting Wednesday at Revolution, which is a good thing. Dave Hause's acoustic set may have proved a bit of a downer as an opener for energetic gothsters AFI. Craig can sometimes seem like a cross between Mars Volta and A Perfect Circle, just with the occasional funky synth, just waaay softer/poppier, and way more emo with songs like "IStillFeelHer Part 111" and "Children of Divorce." Expect lots of those "To Write Love on Her Arms" T-shirts. Fun (but potentially offensive) fact: Craig has shirts that read "To Write Jonny On Her Arms."

OK Go Bringing Mildly Annoying Act to Design Miami/

ok_go.jpg
OK Go in Moritz Waldemeyer-designed LED jackets.
We're just going to come out and say it: The only reason OK Go has enjoyed any kind of popularity is because of that darn "quirky" music video. Their songs are okay at best, so we're a little shocked that they've been tapped by forward-thinking fair Design Miami/ for a special Design Performance.

The indie-pop band will be come together with tech designer Moritz Waldemeyer for a FENDI-sponsored event at the fair. Waldemeyer has retrofitted Gibson guitars with laser lights and FENDI materials that will interact with a video wall that will leave luminous traces behind when played -- sort of like a musical paintbrush.

This isn't the first time Waldemeyer has worked with the band, he's designed LED jackets for OK Go's stage show. "It's such a pleasure to be working with Moritz again. He's one of those rare and wonderful artists who's equally inventive in the domain of minute technological details and broad, open-ended creative ideas," says OK Go's Damian Kulash. "Our brand of performance -- super-saturated, super visual, super fun -- is precisely the right arena for his design. We knew right away that we needed to make instruments with him, and ever since we've been looking for the opportunity to realize our dream of playing guitars that are their own light show."

OK Go will be on site to perform, for the first time, with the customized guitars for the duration of the fair from December 1 through 4 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Admission to the fair is $20. For more information, visit designmiami.com.

Sam Barry Plays Harmonica, Talks Cocaine at Miami Book Fair

Local funnyman Dave Barry usually introduces him as "The only guy I know who's been a minister and a coke dealer." That's according to Sam Barry, his brother, a guy who used to ruin lives, save souls, and is now working for book publisher HarperOne and sidegigging as an author.

Sam Barry's new book is called How to Play the Harmonica: And Other Life Lessons (Gibbs Smith) and he was at the Miami International Bookfair promoting it as a speaker on a Saturday morning panel that included Tom Wilson, the guy who does the Ziggy cartoon and was well attended by gray hairs, bald heads, and wrapper crinklers.

Sam Barry is a funny dude, check out our video of him playing the harmonica and check out his own videos on his Sam Barry TV channel on YouTube.
