Last Night: Van Halen at the BankAtlantic Center

Wed Feb 13, 2008 at 03:02:15 PM

Van Halen with Ky-Mani Marley
Bank Atlantic Center, Ft. Lauderdale
Feb. 12, 2008

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 24 years since I last saw Van Halen featuring “Diamond” David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen together on the same stage. Yes, it was back in 1984 at Madison Square Garden that I was fortunate enough to have my head blown off at the most exciting rock and roll event of that year. For a 15-year-old in high school, nothing could come close.

In 2008, the “Diamond” seems to have lost its luster, and the “Big Rock” show doesn’t seem quite that big anymore. It’s hard to watch rock legends age ungracefully, particularly in the case of Roth. Still, even though the band’s remaining three original members are all in their fifties, Eddie Van Halen and the band can still incite a high-octane reaction from an arena full of fans. A sold-out arena, I might add.

But first came opening act Ky-Mani Marley, son of the late, great Bob. It seemed a strange combination for the bill, two completely different styles of music. The numbers he performed comprised a mix of his own and his father’s (“No Woman No Cry” and “I Shot the Sheriff”). It was apparent that he was very grateful for the opportunity to tour with Van Halen, thanking them several times. I would’ve liked to seen him separately in his own setting.

By the time he finished, the arena was filled to capacity, and the anticipation and excitement was thick enough to cut with a knife. When at last the lights went down, the crowd erupted, and the band kicked off their set with their remake of the classic Kinks song “You Really Got Me.” Yes, it rocked! They then quickly dove into their early catalog with songs like “I’m the One,” “Running with the Devil,” and “Romeo Delight” (which featured a brief section into which Roth incorporated The Who’s “Magic Bus”). On “Somebody Get Me a Doctor,” Eddie incorporated a bluesy guitar section and went into Humble Pie’s “I Don’t Need No Doctor” and Cream’s remake of the blues classic “Spoonful” as a tribute to acts that influenced the young Van Halen.

Van Halen was always a band known for their “big rock” presentation, both in music and in attitude and swagger. It was a magical combination of Eddie’s sweltering guitar licks and leads, Dave’s hypersexual alpha-male showmanship, Michael Anthony’s chunky bass rhythms and impeccable vocal harmonies, and Alex’s incredible, over-the-top, on-point drumming which stood in contrast to his quiet nature.

The unfortunate reality of Van Halen, 2008 is that Dave seems to have become a parody of himself. The pompous sexual mojo he tries to force down the audience’s throat just seems comical. And the replacement of bassist Michael Anthony with Eddie’s 17-year-old son Wolfgang is out of place. Although his playing impressed for a teenager, his lackluster energy and high school acne just didn’t do it for an original Van Halen fan.

The band later ran though a set of Roth-era titles like “Beautiful Girls,” “Dance the Night Away,.” “I’ll Wait,” “Hot for Teacher,” and so many more … 24 songs in all, plus solos. Hats off to that! All in all, the best part of the show had to be the solos delivered by the Van Halen brothers. Alex gave a tight and clean (not long and tedious) drum solo and got to show off his awesome percussion skills. The combination of video work and added keyboard and horn section lent to a great performance. As far as guitar solos go, Eddie Van Halen leads the pack. His performance was sheer wizardry during one12-minute stretch. He began with soft flamenco/classical style picking, building into a distorted Hendrix-like section before going into the soothing, pipe-organ-like sounds of his “Cathedral” solo from the Diver Down album. He rose to the plateau of the solo with his seminal double handed tapping “Eruption,” which whipped the crowd into
frenzy. Incredible.

There was no doubt that Van Halen could still deliver the goods. By the audience reaction and embrace, I have to be unbiased and give credit where credit is due. But personally, I still remain on the fence. Nevertheless, it was damn cool to see that after all this time, Dave and Eddie were able to put their differences aside and give us all a chance to rock with the Van Halen Express. -- Carmel Ophir

Reddo says:

The setlist listed above is wrong, 'On Fire' wasn't played.

Phyllis says:

the concert was GREAT!!! Most 20 year olds wish they had bods like Daves. We wanted the original VAN Halen... we got it, attitude and all

jamie says:

What i saw last night was the Van halen "B" team. I am a life long van halen fan, but diamond dave was mediocre at best. he is not a vocolist like sammy, but he is excellent at screaming. his passion for the show was weak, and he is there strictly for the pay check( his fake huge smile and relationship with the audience seemed phony, where sammy gives it all from the heart---big difference!)......it's all business to dave. sammy is far superior, and he ain't doing it for the money, as he's loaded! as far as wolfie goes, he was just OK ( at best), and the audio sounded like a blur, not the tightness of having michael anthony on bass. Anthony really got the rawest deal i have ever heard about with this and the 2004 tour. with only 3 muscians, the lack of quality is obvious. they need MA back bad, as the kid is not convincing yet, and needs several more years of practice to maybe be decent. anyway----a bit dissapointed with the bands tightness and legendery perfection. eddie, however was on top of his game and looked great. please bring back sammy and michael anthony, as the "B" team just doesn't cut it!......still a fun night out regardless--- peace!

Jon says:

You all must have been in the cheap seats cause if you were sitting up front with us you would have been blown away. The energy & enthusiasm from these 3 50 plus guys matched or exceeded that of any 20 year old. Thier musicianship is actually better than 20 years ago because they have honed thier craft.

Rudy says:

Since these guys aren't running around chugging Jack Daniels like they were the last time I saw them with Dave (at the Sportatorium!) they sounded tighter. I thought the backing vocal harmonies were excellent. The sound was a bit muddy but still a great show. Too bad Dave's voice was failing him - there were several lines he just didn't sing. Eddy was awesome and how cool must it be to have your son backing you on bass?
Reddo is correct...the 2nd song was
"show ur love"
It was a great set.

NM says:

Dave has been a parody of himself since 1978. Nothing new here... after reading this, I don't think the author really "gets" Van Halen. Although I have to admit, I've seen this tour twice, but not at this venue.

Michelle says:

Does David still have the roadies herding gals to "visit" him backstage?

Scott says:

I have seen this show 5 times. Most recently this one and Sunday in Atlanta. Atlanta's show was great, except the sound board blew out during Eddie's solo. But only for about 1 minute, which is forever concidering the moment.

On Fire was not played and has not been played on any of these shows, but I wish it had been.

David Lee Roth is the original, and only front man for Van Halen. Sammy is good. But DLR is the "diamond one"

I saw VH on the lasr 4 tours the first time around starting with the Women and Children First tour.

There is no substitute for Diamond Dave and Eddie together on the same stage..

redballjets says:

This was my fourth show this tour and I thought that they were rushing through the set list. Dave never told his story b4 ice cream man and he didnt do his hat routine during dance the night away. I sat in the pit the first 3 shows I saw and It was incredible. after seeing videos on youtube i realized i was missing the light show so I sat about 20 rows back and i gotta tell ya that the sound was not loud enough and they didnt have rear speakers. This made the show not as enjoyable along with the fact that they rushed through it. Correct, the second song was I'm the one. There is only 1 Van Halen and it is with DLR. So what MA wasnt playing Bass. Who cares. And sammy, Sammy is only interested in selling tequilla and he is not half the showman as Dave.

Rich Vega says:

Good show, but poor Eddie was upset. DLR has always been a ham, I thought he was great though. Ironically, Wolfgang seemed to have less energy than the other 3 guys. Something happened to Eddie during Alex's drum solo offstage, not sure what. Near the end, Eddie kept going over to Wolf and yelling something at him and Wolf looked like he didnt give a damn what his Dad was saying. Then Eddie got pissed yanking his guitar cable from under his pedalboard. He started acting erratically dropping his cigarette and picking up again a few times before throwing it. The moment I cant get out of my head though, is after the show ended as they walked offstage. Eddie walks by his stack of EVH amps and punches the speaker cabinet as hard as he could, knocking the speaker cabinet over and it falls, sandwiching Eddie between the stage platform and the toppled cabinet. It was so embarrassing and it really put a sour last note on the whole show because I felt like Eddie obviously wasn't having as good a time as he would have like the fans to believe.

j to the c says:

The last review is interesting. Nobody seemed to mention that Eddie through a temper tantrum on stage. It sounds like technical problems but it's silly to and immature for Eddie to act like that.
