Better than: Rebecca Black's version of Friday.

It's disturbingly easy to put into words what the combined efforts of six local acts, a supportive venue, trusting fellow New Times staffers, and a lively crowd meant on Friday: Everything! Given the amount of promotion leading up to this showcase assembled by a team including yours truly, you'd expect that a review would be nothing less than effusive. And you'd be right. Here are a few of the evening's highlights:

All of the bands who performed at Friday's New Times Stage as part of the SW 3rd Ave Music Festival were on point -- but only one can hold high the title of winning the evening's text vote challenge, a "Battle of the Bands" of sorts.

After a long night of tabulating and checking for hanging chads, there is a winner. Is it John Ralston, the Dewars, Young Circles, Plains, the New, or Lavola?

SW 3rd Ave Music Festival Full Schedule

Those of you who read this week's print piece regarding John Ralston only scratched the surface of what's going on with the Lake Worth master songwriter. In the raw, exclusive Q&A that follows, there's a ton more regarding Ralston's sessions in New Orleans with Michael Seaman and David Vandervelde. Also, read about that strain of Peter Gabriel running through a record that might owe more to the Traveling Wilburys than anyone else, and some real talk about lo-fi and the cutthroat record business.

Whether you read this (admittedly long) interview before his evening performance at the SW 3rd Ave Music Festival tonight at Green Room, or sit back with a copy of Shadows of the Summertime sometime this weekend, it's a rewarding, in-depth read.
