Pre-Record Store Day Events Radio-Active Records Is Excited About
When it comes to needs versus wants, we at New Times find it easy to draw the line in most places. Shelter, clothing, cable -- these things are great, but stick a stack of records next to a cable box and watch us clutch that stack for life while we run naked to whatever couch it is we are crashing on that night. After all, home is where the needle hits the imprint.
It's easy to be resourceful about a lot of things, but building your record collection isn't as simple as stealing toilet paper from a public restroom to save a few bucks. It takes time and caution.
Radio-Active Records in Fort Lauderdale is the perfect place to take that time and forget about caution, because it's hard to walk away from the place with regrets.
With Record Store Day 2013 looming right around the next lunar cycle, it is well advised to pay a visit to your local record store ahead of time to scout the scene and prepare for the big day.
But, before you go running off toward the corner of Sunrise Blvd. and US-1, to map your route around the store in order to reach your optimum record hoarding potential, take a minute to get to know Radio-Active's Mikey Ramirez.
What follows is, in no particular order, what he's looking forward to in March to help pass the time between now and the big day, April 20.
1. Leonard Cohen
March 20, at James L. Knight Center, 400 SE Second Ave., Miami.
"No explanation is necessary." Ramirez says, "I bought my tickets the day they went on sale."
2. How to Destroy Angels - Welcome Oblivion LP
"Analog and modular synthesizers dominate this highly-anticipated debut LP, which has already landed on my best of list for 2013."
"I've already seen titles prepped from the Cure, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Husker Du, Notorious B.I.G., Dead Can Dance, Foals, Nick Cave, Cream, Pulp, Van Dyke Parks, Small Faces, T.S.O.L... You get the idea!" Ramirez advises, "Start saving!"
