The Knight Foundation Wants to Give you Dough for Your Creative Cultural Project

If you also worship at the altar of Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, you might have caught the "Take Back MTV" episode of Portlandia. They did something we here in South Florida took note of. They name-dropped one of the major foundations located in our community, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

And lucky for us in the tri-county area, we can apply for funding to create our own version of Portlandia or even to bring back MTV through the Knight Arts Challenge. The application process has begun, and all it takes are 150 words on your kooky, brilliant, or practical cultural plan.

The deadline for the application is March 4. If they like the looks of your plan, you might move to the next level. The criteria is simple, just demonstrate "artistic excellence and ways the project will engage the public," according to a press release. And, "The process is easy, with just three rules: Projects must be about the arts, take place in or benefit South Florida, and match Knight's funding." Anyone, including individuals and for-profit companies, can apply.

Over the past six years, the Knight Foundation has circulated $86 million to bolster the arts in South Florida, which is very kind of them indeed. Be the next artist, dancer, musician, record store, or ventriloquist to get some of that dough.
