Jon Bon Jovi Fans Losing Their Shit: Highlights From the Comments Section

Categories: About A Blog

HEY! SOMEONE DISAGREES WITH ME ON THE INTERNET! LET'S CALL HER A BITCH.

Sometimes, New Times stirs the pot. Sometimes, we put out something controversial, and sometimes, people get agitated and call us idiots and fax us letters saying they're going to murder us. It happens.

Just usually not on a mostly positive review of a 50-year-old dude playing a campy concert.

New Times Music Editor Liz Tracy reviewed last week's Jon Bon Jovi concert, and this blog post was not her idea. But man, you people are assholes.

"What a sad and pathetic review," wrote andreasp229.

"i cant believe i just read this B-itches Review?" wrote jjab652. "I am so mad cause when you insult Bon Jovi LIZ you insult the fans!! GET a real Job. I hope you didnt quite your day job bi%ch."

A charming woman named Nancy Medina also chimed in: "You think you're so clever. The fact is you're not. Don't bore us with your occasional compliments on Jon's hair and ass."

"Us," like there's a clan of Bon Jovi fans that have to approve every review and are not impressed by references to his being attractive. In case you are interested in creepy, hypocritical details, Medina linked her comment to her Facebook profile, where she says she got a degree at the "University of Jovi" and majored in "Jon's megawatt smile and awesome rear."

She commented four times on this story. FOUR.
I especially LOVE the line, "Jon (we'll call him that to distinguish him from his usual band that shares his last name)" ROTFLMAO!!!! OKAY!!!! You're a little late BITCH! I think WE ALL call him that!!! Hahahaha!!
Nancy. Go outside.

Here's another gem, from barbaraknowsrockandroll:
Liz Tracy you are low class, obnoxious and ignorant of the truth.  You have been shamefully disrespectful of one of the greatest rock stars ever AND his accompanying accomplished musicians.  Liz, I guess you "don't know his demographic" or much about  rock and roll, music in general, or even writing. ....and don't tell me your racist too, referring to the "white ladies in the crowd".   I have to say I laughed out loud when you called Jon's rendition of Hallelujah "decent"....OMG I thought I'd lose it laughing....AS IF YOU'D KNOW .   I'll just close with this, in the only way a young punk like you can understand....Liz, you're a flaming asshole and you ought to keep your pie hole shut.
Yeah, Liz. As if you'd know. AS IF YOU HAD EARS OF YOUR OWN. You're a flaming racist asshole with an opinion I disagree with, and I need to make sure you know it.

You are a disgrace too Mr. Abdill to the critic world!!! You have know right talking crap about us JOVI FANS!!! And the picture you have of Jon on this page where you drew on it.......what are you still in Kindergarten?? You are pathetic!!

Angry fan vs. critic/reviewer is a dynamic that's as old as time. I've witnessed many a rabid fan response to a mildly critical comment about some concert footnote throughout my years of newspaper work. But holy moly.

When you start employing mildly threatening language against a writer for doing her job (Yes; Liz was doing her job. She writes for the New Times, not the "Bon Jovi is Infallible" fanzine) you're really doing a disservice to the artist who is the target of your obsession. To quote a poster: "And Lord I hope nobody finds out where you live....Just leave Jon Bon Jovi Alone Understood."

???

You might consider dialing it back a notch.

I am a fanatic Bon Jovi fan with tattoo (lol) and all that goes with beeiing a fan and I read worse. So I don't really understand what all the fuzz is about. But everyone has the right to ventilate their own opinion. I dance like a dork too. Like Jon says; ït is what it is!" You don't have to like it. The only thing i seriously want to mention is the lack of interest in the other members in the band; That chick on the violin is LorenzaPonce. And I am a huge fan of hers too. JBJ & friends/kings of suburbia is just for fun and charity. And I think I read quite a few positive things in the review. or did I read something completely different?

jennjovi001

Well Well Well Liz Liz Liz what the hell are you thinking. Did you not know that JBJ has an extremely strong fan base. Why didn't you just give me your pass to get in to see him. You are either mentally challenged or just plain ole stupid. Jon has been around longer than most rock n rollers. But, I am sure that if he had read your little review he would have just laughed it off, he didn't get this far without realizing ther are some TRUE IDIOTS out there. Im sure he doesn't give a shit what you think. He has waayyy to many others that adore him not just for his music and song writing, but for being generous to a fault. I have been with Bon Jovi since 1983, with Runaway and own everyCD he has made. Will continue until either he or I are no longer on this earth, then I pray Ill get to see him in the hereafter. JBJ is the greatest band that ever walked the face of the earth...go get your ears and eyes checked dumbass..Man you have really pissed me off and obviously several others. Oh, and on 1 last note Liz whens the last time hundreds of thousands of millions of people came to see you...I'd say NEVER. Go away. And Lord I hope nobody finds out where you live....Just leave Jon Bon Jovi Alone Understood. Find someone else to speak badly of.

Yes Jon is important, he does so much besides making music and being a family man. Look, you don't want to fuck with a lot of us Jovi fans, as we back each other up. Your review was shit, and you need to do more homework, talk to the man, research before saying the things you did. Were you at the show?? I know ppl who were and you are out of touch my friend, not us fans!!! Lynn

"Jon Bon Jovi is not important. He isn't. He wrote great music, once upon a time, and now he's coasting on those songs and your money, which will both run out in several years when everyone involved is dead. But, big picture here, he does not matter. Not even a little -- and neither does someone disagreeing with you about his being the second coming of Jesus' heavenly tush." This infuriates me.  Obviously you are out of touch.  In addition to still writing great music, Bon Jovi (the band) was the top selling tour of 2010.  I would say that is pretty important and relevant.  Jon has started the soul foundation and the soul kitchen in recent years....he gives back to the community. I doubt the people living in homes Jon built with habitat for humanity would say that Jon "does not matter...not even a little."  What the hell have you done besides write for a piece of crap paper? So glad to know that I irritated the author so much that she had to quote me first, too bad it is not for a reputable paper. People, get a grip..this is a scam.  They need the hits, they know JBJ fans are loyal and will do what it takes to get under everyone's skin.  This is a pathetic attempt to drum up some business to what is known in South Florida as low class print media (ads for pill mills, massage parlors, anything trashy etc) . Which is hysterical as they are calling those attending the concert white trash.  ROTFLMAO!

This is extremely humorous.  As for Mr. Jovi (or whatever his real name is that I have no care to investigate or look up) being important enough to write a second article on.  You old folk obviously have no idea how the internet works.  You are caught in what is commonly referred to as a “Flame War” You have been “Trolled” by the writer, (of the 2nd article, not the review) and it is extremely entertaining.  I myself could care less about the initial review until I saw this gem of a headline come up.  This got me not only reading this article, and spending time on their website raising their site statistics, it made me read the review and all the comments as well.  You have been my entertainment for the day.  As for the validity of the reporter, just because you disagree with someone does not make them an idiot, or have less credibility.  Im sure Jon has had much worse reviews and takes such ribbing in stride (go look for his sketch with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog)  The fact is, he is an aging relic of an icon from a past era, could it be that the review hits to close to home as to how relevant you are to society and how past your prime you’ve become for coming to the defense of a man who hit his peak 3 decades ago?

AnaSerraeMoura

Well, in my opinion, Mr. Jon Bon Jovi is so important that leads Mr. Rich Abdill to write an article about his and Bon Jovi's fans disliking some Liz Tracy's review... I don't know what kind of reporters or reviwers you have in US, but in Portugal, no matter our country situation is, our reporters/reviewers don't do that.... in the end, you are not even professional at all Mr. Abdill.

I am a Bon Jovi fan for almost all my life, and I am so proud to say that his words through his songs have been an inspiration through the years. I'm even more proud to have been seing him become a great family man, a true patriot in your country, a most important, someone that dedicates a big part of his life to help the homeless and people with difficulties in your country. Now tell me as if I was very very dumb: Who is not important ? You are not import at all Mr. Abdill and I am glad I can repeat this.

Jon's fans are dedicated, more that 18 million just on facebook. You live in a free country so, we may give our opinions to a bad review...

Not important is to criticize Jon though his fans... Jon Bon Jovi is important and matters !!!

ipekmine83
ipekmine83

I'd commented on Liz Tracy's 'review' as well, turns out what I said wasn't interesting enough to be mentioned by Rich Abdill. Oh, wait, maybe everything I wrote made sense, thus he didn't/couldn't make fun of my comment? Let's see what I'd said back then: "One of the most shallow and unrealistic reviews I've ever read. It's disrespecting Mr. Jon Bon Jovi himself, the musicians that were up on stage with him, the audience at the show and the entire fanbase of a band that's been around since 1983. Next time when you attempt to write something about a concert: 1) Try to learn the names of the people performing 2) Avoid writing horrendous lines based solely on looks and sex appeal 3) Try to focus on the quality music. All in all, HAVE A NICE DAY." Yes, that's what I wrote as a comment to Liz Tracy's disrespectful and excessively subjective review on the gig. For those who're not familiar with the "Jovi language", the "have a nice day" at the end of my comment won't mean a thing, but the fans would know what I mean ;) And here's what I say now: Putting a manually ruined Jon Bon Jovi pic perfectly aligns with the content of what Mr. Abdill wrote. The title "... Losing Their Sh*t" also fits perfect with the level/class of the author. I think it's natural for fans to be upset when someone humiliates Mr. Jon Bon Jovi AND the fans in a review. Some may choose to ignore, some may react with a temper, some may reply in a more diplomatic way. But at the end of the day, as well as the fans who were at the show, those who weren't there have been disturbed by the obnoxious review written by Liz Tracy. This may well be the sole gole in writing those lines, the typical "piss off the fans, get attention". When it comes to that, congrats L. Tracy, you've achieved that. What amazes me is that someone classifying an audience as "blondes", or "white ladies" actually earns money with the crap she writes? Unbelievable really.  What's even worse is the words used by Abdill "delusional, middle-aged sociopaths"? Whoa, now THAT's a tad bit too much, mister. Please stop attacking the fans and labeling people in such horrid ways. Targeting a huge fanbase is not a wise thing to do. Particularly when the fanbase includes millions of people from three generations across the globe, united as one huge Jovifamily. Blogging online does not give anyone the right to disrespect others, therefore I hope you come back to your senses. As for Liz Tracy, she certainly doesn't have to be impressed by Jon Bon Jovi or his concert, she might as well hate it. But a concert review should be more focused on music and facts, rather than the hair, ass and characteristics of the audience, in my opinion. If the artists messes up on stage, upsets the fans, performs less that his average, sure, the reviewer should mention all that. But the review that started all this was truly unprofessional by all means, and that's just sad. All in all, In a couple of days, all of this will be forgotten, including the ridiculous review and the horrible lines bu Abdill, but JBJ and the band will keep rockin' on and the fans will keep being Jovified.

@ana.carlosport Saying that Jon Bon Jovi is not important is simply ridiculous. He's a gifted musician and a successful rockstar who's been around for 3 decades (and still counting), a devoted father and husband, a major philanthropist, a very successful CEO and one of the rare role models that give hope and inspiration to millions of fans. Saying that he's not important is disrespecting him and the fans. Oh, wait. Rich Abdill has no sense of respect to other people's taste in music or opinions, I must have forgotten that. To him, the people who give their time to read & comment on Liz Tracy's review are delusional middle aged sociopaths, after all. This is his level of responding to readers. So, I think we've been wrong all along the way to expect a quality argument from a person with this approach. Pathetic. Maybe we should all leave him in his "so important" little world, that would save us some time.

rabdill
rabdill

@ipekmine83 I didn't include your post because there was plenty of stupidity already in there; yours was not particularly interesting. I couldn't make fun of your comment? You said "It's disrespecting Mr. Jon Bon Jovi himself, the musicians that were up on stage with him, the audience at the show and the entire fanbase of a band that's been around since 1983." That's easy to make fun of, because none of that matters. It was a REVIEW! Who cares about disrespecting anyone? He is a rock star, and we owe him nothing.

You say "blogging online does not give anyone the right to disrespect others." I say you're a moron. That's exactly what it gives me the right to do, and I don't care even a little about the "Jovifamily" that I've irritated. They seem, from what I've seen so far, to be quite childish.

@ipekmine83 Given the number of insults you've thrown at me over some guitar player, you've got a lot of nerve asking me to have a "sense of respect to other people's taste in music." You afforded no such courtesy to Liz.

ipekmine83
ipekmine83

@rabdill You say I'm a moron? Thanks for showing your level. Again. It's been my mistake all along, should have ignored the review and your blog, shouldn't have written a single comment. I'm actually glad that you don't appreciate Mr. JBJ, someone so utterly negative and rude like yourself certainly shouldn't be sharing my point of view in anything, including music. It's not surprising that you don't find my comments interesting, because you probably don't know how to handle a reasonable respond which doesn't include obscenities. As for JBJ, you owe him nothing. Fine. But I do. Most of us do. Plus, respect is something you feel for those deserve it, not really relevant to owing. Anyway when you talk crap about JBJ, we the fans happen to respond. Simple as that. I won't even start telling you what I meant by a Jovifamily, you probably won't get it, neither should you, anyway. You can keep blogging with your beloved right of disrespecting others. I'd better go back to my thesis, being the middle-aged (LOL) sociopath I am, I got a 2nd master to finish. PS: From what I've learned back in medschool, you're more delusional than all of us combined :D

@rabdill  Is Liz really looking for courtesy when she writes her reviews?

ipekmine83
ipekmine83

@rabdill Liz Tracy is of course entitled to her opinion, I said so in a previous comment. I simply disagreed with the way she classified the fans and focused on JBJ's hair, ass, etc. rather than the quality of music. You see, in a concert review, I expect more details on the vocal performance, the music produced on stage and the show itself. One can say "he didn't give his 100%, couldn't hit the notes as usual, didn't play long/good enough" etc. That's what I expect from a reviewer, to understand why she/he wasn't impressed. All in all, I did critisize L. Tracy in a comment on her page. I suggested that she should learn the names of the people performing when she writes a review (instead of saying 'chick' to Lorenza Ponce, for instance= , and suggested that she should avoid writing a concert review based on looks & sex appeal rather than the music itself. That's all. I didn't like the way she wrote about JBJ, the show and the audience in a rather mocking manner, but to be honest, she's like an angel/ major author compared to you. You simply attack people and use a rude and unacceptable manner in doing so. As for my gradschool talk, I felt the need to let you know the level of person you're calling names. Anyway, I'm not gonna comment further on Liz Tracy's review here, if I wanna do so, I'll go back to her review and write there. Why I commented on this page was to let you know that I, as a fan, am disturbed by the way you target the fans as delusional sociopaths and write really low stuff like "losing their sh*t", but I think there's no point in trying to have a civil conversation with you or trying to agree to disagree. That's just sad.

rabdill
rabdill

@ipekmine83 Again, you hold your comments up as a beacon of truth, but didn't utter a single syllable of credible criticism of anything Liz wrote. You can insult me all you'd like -- I've been insulted before, and much more eloquently. The question is why Liz isn't entitled to her opinion -- and it's a question that, despite all your grad-school bloviating, you haven't answered.

AZNanc
AZNanc

@rabdill No, I dsagreed with someone so I was called an asshole. Jon did sing as it was put, "old people music" but he did it JBJ style and with a lot of heart. He finds joy in the old rock music and he loves to share it with his fans. Those who have attended one of these types of shows, knows that it is nothing like a Bon Jovi show nor do we expect a Bon Jovi show. As a fan, you know what is going on and respect Jon as a performer and watch how he takes a song from the 50's or 60's and makes it current. He is able to break out of his 80's shell and be more than a hairband lead singer. Not many from that era can say that. Bon Jovi are still making records and selling out stadiums. He is more than nice hair.

rabdill
rabdill

@nanc7860 Ok, are we talking about my blog post, or the review of the show? The review was saying Bon Jovi played old people music, but yeah, my post was definitely calling you an asshole.

You are not an asshole because you like Jon Bon Jovi. You are an asshole because when someone disagrees with you, you throw an internet tantrum and call people names instead of explaining why you disagree.
