Harley Flanagan, Cro-Mags Founder, Goes on Stabbing and Biting Rampage

News sources have been reporting on Cro-Mags founder and bassist, Harley Flanagan, going on an inspired stabbing and biting melee in the VIP area of the Webster Hall during the CBGB Festival this past July 6. The 42-year old punk rocker, MMA enthusiast, and Krishna follower supposedly gained access to the VIP section of the venue with his CBGB pass that he was entitled to use thanks in part to a panel discussion he had been a part of the day prior.

All this PMA allegedly stems from his exclusion from performing with the Cro-Mags during this particular festival and to try and explain how this band has juggled lineups since its inception in 1981 would be far too long-winded for these digital pages. We can just assume that at this moment, Flanagan is probably not getting along with John Joseph and that only one version of the Cro-Mags is performing.

The two victims of Flanagan's attack are William Berario who received a cut above his eye as well as bites on the face (Bath salts? Weed? Cannibalism du jour?) and current Cro-Mags bass player, Michael "The Gook" Couls. Coincidence? Hmmm...

Before we look at some videos of Flanagan's better moments, consider the following quote from a Flipside Magazine interview: "It's funny though, even Roger from Agnostic Front recently told me getting into the Krsnas at that time was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. Cause I definitely would have wound up dead or in jail; I was just getting into too many fights and doing too many drugs and shit. I was definitely nuts as a kid."

Still nuts as an adult, bro. In any case, the show which also featured Sick of it All was canceled and by all eyewitness accounts, club security was able to contain this incident before it escalated to early '80s hardcore violence proportions. Flanagan has always seemed a little off and now, facing two counts of second degree assault and weapons charges, he'll have plenty of time to meditate on the age of quarrel.

No matter what people think of Harley Flanagan personally, he showed up to a Cro-mags show with a hunting knife. That alone shows that he took no time to think of his own freedom, fans and especially his children. A grown man should know better, despite his personal feelings towards the people who were injured as an outcome of his actions. This spreads beyond being a fan of the music and has affected many people. Get your heads out of your asses and take a look at the seriousness of the situation that took place.

Very good point;At issue is not whether one is "affiliated" with one or another of these dingbats and their respective "Armies" of adoring knuckle headed fan clubs (pun intended),or even the vague,impenetrable history of rip-offs and back-stabbing(pun intended) and the sordid details they have forced anyone even casually involved in this,long,drawn-out soap-opera of a story to listen and think about for FAR TOO LONG....It is that ,even if all this is really just a quite insignificant and over-blown bat of an eyelash in the Great Scheme of Things,and in the story of music ,it doesn't change the fact that Harley showed up to the gig of his FORMER band mate,armed,not with "JiuJitsu For Life!",but with the classic weapon of a Mid-Western shopping-mall parking-lot rumble,a Hunting Knife,of all things.How trashy can a Hardcore Skin Head get?What,Paragon wouldn't sell you another Tanto?I thought "they can stab through a car-door,Dude"?Now you wanna git all Hank Junior on our ass at the Ritz?.This is why I don't go to what you idiots like to refer to as "Shows";the music takes a decidedly lesser importance to the mindless, and moronic violence.Sorry Marnie,I just can't do it anymore.

And I know Harley"personally",too(unfortunately),as well as the other dingbat,(equally unfortunately) and that counts for....less than nothing. The girl who pointed out how vapid most of your,highly partisan,responses were,was correct;At issue is the Hunting Knife,which he brought into/had stashed for him prior too the event,and the Management, promoter's and Security's lack-a-dasical attitude to the numerous warnings and even direct requests from the band members themselves, that he NOT be allowed to appear in person at the venue,due to his own numerous warnings,which he had posted,HIMSELF, on Facebook,on what he planned to do. CMJ,the rotting,Fish-head at the top of this putrified food-chain,issued him his Press Panel credential,essentially a VIP-all-access Laminate,AFTER being appraised of all this potentially lethal situation,so they and the CBGB festival organizers themselves should come in for no smaller share of rebuke.But if this was,say,New Orleans,and the Slasher/Biter in question was,say ,oh someone like Mystikal("I'm effervesecet(sic) and I'm off that crescent, Nastier than a full grown German Shepard"),this fool would be looking at Big Ben.And thats HARD TIME to you Cherry's out there.

John Joseph is an inspiration, and an icon. Harley is a despicale lowlife who brought a giant hunting knife to a live musical performance/concert he was not welcome at or invited to. He then stabbed a musician in the chest, and deprived thousands of amazing and special event.

I know Harley personally and can honestly say he is a kind and good person (stage presence aside). I'm not apologizing on his behalf or defending his actions, but I'm sure there is more to the story than just the details published. "Stabbing rampage" is a misnomer, he got in a fight with individuals he already knew. Anyway, hopefully this situation resolves in a positive way.
