Charlie Pickett, the Bikes, and Rad Raffle Prizes at Benefit for Boise Bob and His Backyard Band's Lori O'Quinn

Imagine a big, loud family Christmas dinner, or Passover meal, or whatever. There are good and bad jokes, lots of laughter, calls for another beer, good music, and warm hugs. It's a smooth sort of chaos, one filled with love. The Saturday night benefit for musician Lori O'Quinn was much like this, a family affair.

We entered the Pompano sports bar Play by Play through the adjoining liquor store, beckoned in to the party by a Bostonian. When we left, we were driving Boise Bob home with his guitar and amp. In South Florida, the musical community is more than bunch of people who've sung and strummed together. Many of the area's fans and friends came together for O'Quinn in her time of need. A recent car accident deeply affected her life, the life of bandmate Dan Hosker, and the future of their band Boise Bob and His Backyard Band

Boise Bob sang some songs.
To raise money for O'Quinn, friend Jessica Kross organized a pretty awesome raffle, gathering prizes from a range of supporters. There was a To Be Hated care package, Iron Forge Press posters, musicians and the musically minded offered their instruments, art, and other valuables to help O'Quinn out. A 12-string guitar donated by local legend Charlie Pickett ended up going to his videographer Karen Levine. Pickett joked that the instrument tunes itself. Levine might have to grow another arm to play that beast.

Alex and Lori announcing winners.
Though the bands performing offered entertainment, the raffle got the biggest laughs. Sometimes New Times writer Alex Rendon took it upon himself at some point to play Vanna White, reading off winners, and himself winning a tank top donated by local act The Riot Act -- which he immediately donned -- and a guitar given by the Bikes. He "bro-ed" it up and made jokes, like an impatient, "Uh, I think they close at 2 a.m., man" when someone dawdled.

The night kicked off with Nightly Death Shade, continued with Boise Bob, playing not with his Backyard Band, but with other seasoned talents. They warmed the crowd up as the bar filled with a crowd who knows how to have a good time. The Bikes played '90s influenced hard rock reminiscent of Pearl Jam, but way cooler than Pearl Jam because instead of a bass, or another guitar, the third band member made crazy sounds with his violin. The singer said, straight-faced to our delight, "This song is called 'Cunts.'" They finished off with an extended "Pinball Wizard" medley.

Everyone was psyched about these violent little goodies.

The bar had all of the things necessary to sooth the soul of one afflicted with attention deficit disorder. There were two dollar PBRs, TVs, pool tables, darts, a bartender juggling flaming liquor bottles, and then there's that liquor store attached. Something for every mood.

Charlie Pickett wrapped up the night with a very laid back, quirky country-blues rock performance. It was, again, like Christmas with the family. He joked on his jovial friends in the crowd, complimented the ladies, wrote instructive notes for his drummer, asked us "What do you want to hear?"

There was something about playing a song called "I Don't Give a Fuck," of which he said, "is kind of my motto sometimes." A song about Marlboro Country got O'Quinn with Pickett on the mic singing the "Hang On Sloopy" chorus. "American Travel Lust," Pickett announced, was about Huckleberry Finn and literary criticism and stuff. He even tried to use the stripper pole in the room as a slide for his guitar. Pickett joked about the crazy laser lights from above that left psychedelic trails and lines on those near and on the stage. "Sometimes Bill has a red dot on his pecker," he said, and it made him laugh at odd times.

There was dancing, fun, but also there were serious moments. Everyone knew we were there to support a part of our community that is ailing. Hopefully, some of the love and laughter friends provided on Saturday night will contribute to healing, a speedy recovery, and, soon again, the live sounds of Boise Bob and His Backyard Band.

NOW - where was I? Oh Yes -  this is a beautiful article, and I think you nailed it. Guitar Center, where Lori is employed actually pitched in and got her a car, but it is not running yet and there are title problems. We are trying to help her. Try being a musician and working at Guitar Center and having no transportation - enough said? Guitar Center also donated a $75 gift card! Please respect. Many people are effected by this accident. This night was also a chance for all of them to come together. It was moving and beautiful and amazing. The music was sublime, and I am so honored to see these bands and musicians and to have them come to this rescue- I am grateful to all beyond measure. Fans, supporters, raffle prize donators, our scene! All the help from all the press! Nightly Death Shade, The Bikes, Boise Bob and His Backyard Band, Charlies Pickett & Friends! My friends and family-Scott. Barry Apfel! Rick Ambrose, Ray Harris, Ian, Corey, Hal, PLAY BY PLAY, too many to name. You are true and good souls. You have my heart! Lori, we love you and we are here for you!

What about your in serious poor taste facebook posts, lies, misrepresentation of facts, kicking someone where they are down, playing us vs. them, and beating up on a girl promoter that has done more for the music in our scene than anyone else-who doesn't desrve this? And who OBVIOUSLY didnt' do any of things you accused of her and certainly no wrong? Srry for all that.... ? The light of truth is now apparent. Sign me someone who was on the fence. Who sees what is right and seewhat you did as wrong. And your supposed to be a grown man and leader of this music community.... to set an example? Sad state are scene is is from this kind of thing. Thanks NOT for YOUR Contribution.

Rob Elba. He somehow thinks it's all about him (typical middle school dramatics). What a selfish asshole. We are all feeling this pain equally. To try and divide people against Lori is truly hateful and reprehensible. Just my two cents, and I'm not even involved. It's times of hardship like these when people should unite, & not divide.

Of course you're right Sherri. I for one am sorry for my part of the public bickering. I should have known better than to join in the fray and will stop from this point on.

Ok, this has gone too far!! Everyone quit fighting over this and leave things the way they are!! The newspaper articles say other then what peoples personal postings say. If you want to go by whats printed in the papers or by whats written on peoples walls, that is your personal truth. For now, everyone quit it and focus on everyone healing and dealing with such a tragic accident. Danny was only doing what Danny loved to do and that was being Danny!!! What Lori indured I am sure was very tragic also. We have all had things in our lives that have happend and we all have terrible memories wrapped up in our minds, whether it is family or friends. Everyone quit trying to prove who was right and who was wrong. Time will tell that. For now, everyone get along and respect each other and from now on anything that has to do with Danny you check with Ken Hosker first, that is his father. As a family member I am really dissapointed that so many of Dannys friends are now bickering about all of this. Although I know alot of background stories about alot of pople, you should all just try and get along and know that in all hearts of hearts we want the best for everyone involved in this. I am saying my prayers everyday, not just for Danny but for everyone that I know in my life right now that have daily struggles. Please stop all this!!!

I have bit my tongoue WAY TO LONG. You try to take a person down who did NOTHING wrong, nothing to you - nothing to harm anyone in anyway, Who worked VERY HARD for weeks to help people - and you take down your "so called" friends Hal and Lori and others too with this. You made a big mistake.

I don't need to attach anyone's name to anything to have a good show. I've been doing this for over 20 years. Oh, and you're welcome. I hear he's doing better and I am so glad I have this donation for him from his friends.

Chris Hosker O'Brien Update on Dan HoskerHi Friends, I have an update about Dan after today's meeting with some of the doctors. He continues to defy odds even though he is still a long way from recovery. Two weeks ago we were told he was in multi-organ failure, but today we learned that his liver, kidneys and lungs are recovering and/or expected to recover. His blood pressure is way better than m...ine. He is breathing on his own, and will be able to come off the vent at some point. And he will undergo pelvic surgery early next week to stabilize that area. Other injuries are healing too. This is not to say he is anywhere near well...He did have severe trauma to his head, but we don't know the extent of those injuries, and will not know for a couple of weeks or a month. We were told it could take up to a year to see how far he comes along in that area. I'm told he was looking around the other night which is great...but for me he slept yesterday and today. It's going to be a long haul, but Dan is showing us that he is trying

Charlie, Thanks for the civility, god knows this discussion has to be toned down and a proper perspective is needed. At this point Dan's condition is day to day and very tentative. Taking that into consideration, its much to early to consider benefits. Those will come and will be greatly appreciated when appropriate. I agree that Dave Daniels and Kilmo are perfect choices if that time comes. Thanks again for your perspective. Ken Hosker

Everyone was just trying to help out Lori, mostly to get a car so she could get to work.  Dan's acquaintances (of which I am one) don't know how to try to help him yet.  My assumption is that this fundraiser for Lori was a proportionally small thing and that much bigger fundraiser(s) and donations to try to help Dan will be set up and held later.  No offense was intended.  Good was done for Lori and much better will be done for Dan.  As all of us know, David at Churchill's and Kilmo at Fla Native would give us a one-two, Dade/Broward weekend anytime.  With effective publicity and a good cross-mix of bands, raffles, and auction items, a pretty fair amount of money could be raised.  Is there a public forum to post or share info about Dan's condition, recovery, and treatment?  And donations once the fund is established? Fine. I will hold the funds for him until that time. That is what I asked for!

The benefit was for Lori. It was worked on for about 3 weeks by me. Dan's name only came up the Saturday of the benefit. When we realized the funds collected, the donation of raffle prizes was so great - that we should share this and help in whatever way we could. There is no underlying conniving or manouevering here - I am not that clever. Listen, I am sorry to you and to your family, so very sorry. I am sure as all his friends are and so much more that you are hurting so very much. But there is no collusion, no ill intentions. Believe what you wish.  I throw about 5 to 10 benefits a year - to give back and to help people and groups, including Autism, The Broward Feeding Coop, and Abi's Place a school for special needs children and for help when friends and musicians as needed. Including stolen guitars and more. Again I am so sorry about Dan. There's nothing here toward what you are pointing. But go ahead if this is what you need to do.

Chris Hosker O'Brien

Our family lawyer will be setting up a non-profit fund for Dan, which will be managed by a board of his family members. Until that's done, with a tax id number to go along with it, anything raised on his behalf really isn't legal, so I think we'll wait.

Jesred
Jesred

And we wish to set up a fund which I discussed with Rob and he told me he would relay this information to Dan's family. I was of the belief and understanding by his messages to me, that he was doing this and that he would communicate with you Dan's family. And we do have funds, and I do wish to convey them to you for this purpose. Or to whomever, as I told Rob, would be the right person to convey them to.

Jesred

Also, I have donation for you.

Jesred
Jesred

Yes. Lori wanted to give some money to help Dan when the benefit got big. We decided the value of the Mosrite and the generous donation should go to that. Is that bad? We/I meant only to be of help.

Chris Hosker O'Brien
Chris Hosker O'Brien

Jessica, here is the quote from your own Facebook page: After careful consideration and much discussion all involved want you to know that this benefit will help Lori, Hal, Boisebob AndHis BackyardBand and we will set up a fund for Dan Hosker. Additionally, the generous donation of a real Mosrite Bass by Barry Apfel is so valuable, I cannot in good conscience raffle this beautiful instrument off for a $1 raffle ticket. There will be silent auction for Barry's guitar - all proceeds from the Mosrite will go directly to the Dan Hosker fund. Details on the fund and on-line donation will be available as soon as it is all set up. Thank you all again, Much Love and Respect. JesRed You absolutely associated his name with it. Any fund set up in his name will be through the family, and funds managed by his family. I'm through complaining. I know the benefit was for Lori all along, but for you to attach his name to it at the last minute didn't sit well with me. That is all.
