Ellen DeGeneres' Controversial Response to Renda Writer's "Second Annual Ellen Art Show"

That's Writer on the left with the beard, fedora, and fanatical smile.

Back in August, we reported that local poet and promoter Renda Writer was giving up his post as editor of local arts mag WeMerge in order to focus even more of his energy toward getting the attention of Ellen DeGeneres so that she may invite him to read one of his poems on her show. Now, after years of "Look at me, Ellen!" activity, DeGeneres has finally acknowledged his existence... kinda.

In his latest effort to get the attention of the beloved comedian/host, Writer put on an art show in Los Angeles devoted to her. The event featured more than 60 portraits of DeGeneres and was called, appropriately, "The 2nd Annual Ellen Art Show." The first was held here in South Florida last year. After the event, Writer dropped a couple of the paintings off to the mail room of the Ellen DeGeneres Show and... They made it onto television!

The story doesn't end there, though. The manner in which she reacted to the paintings and the show itself has become a point of heated debate in the comments section of the YouTube video of the segment and elsewhere on the internet. "This is not the Ellen that I love," posted one viewer. "How could she do this?" asked another. While other commenters defend the spunky host: "Cry me a river people."

In the clip, DeGeneres' tone is sarcastic, borderline mocking. At one point, she quips confusedly: "There were 60 of these." She goes on to complain about how her crotch and feet were depicted in one of the paintings and questions whether her hand is being shown entering a fishy orifice.

Perhaps most ironically, after all of Writer's effort, she still failed to publicly acknowledge the man of great devotion while managing to discourage his activities: "I don't even know how we got these, but thank you for your paintings. Don't do it again."

Of course, Writer chimed in with a loud and clear answer to the mystery of how the art landed in the mail room in the comments section:

"It was me!!!! I produced, hosted, and curated 'The 2nd Annual Ellen Art Show,' and it was me that dropped these portraits, as well as 11 others, over at the mailroom for The Ellen Degeneres Show."

One fellow commenter feels his pain:

"Damn once again completely ignoring Renda Writer...:\"

When reached for comment today, Writer shrugged off all of the noise on the internet:

"I think a lot of people have too much time on their hands. She's not rude; she's a comedian," he said while "chilling at a Starbucks" in Orange County. "She is aware of me. She is aware of what I do. And that's the first step. Awareness and then acceptance. Next step will be me getting on the show."

And on the issue of her not mentioning his name and claiming that she didn't know where the paintings came from?

"She definitely knows they came from me. There is a little part of me that thinks that maybe she didn't mention my name because it is part of this plot to put me on the show."

Finally, Writer is showing no signs of slowing down, despite Ellen's plea to not do it again.

"What's next is definitely the 'Third Annual Ellen Art Show,'" he said. "And it's funny, because the very last thing she said in that clip was 'Don't do it again.' But, you know, I mention once again, she's a comedian."

Below is the video. What do you think? Is Ellen being less cool than usual here? Are her jokes all in good fun? Does she know that Renda Writer exists? If so, why won't she say his name or ask him to be on the show?

And how about Writer and his efforts? Is he on the verge of reading his poem on the Ellen DeGeneres Show? Or should this be a sign for him to give up?

The saga continues...

I tell you this, if you took away Ellen's fame, and her entourage, her bank account and the cameras that record almost every step she takes, she would have reacted differently. First off, the woman being the celebrity that she is, is insulated. She only receives the information that her hired assistants and staff deem necessary. She gets tid bits here and there. Her name is mentioned hundreds of times per day in multiple levels of media, and she couldn't possibly collate and read them all. Personally, I think that Ellen is a wonderful person and has done much good in the world, but I think that the sad fact remains that she forgot where she came from. I think she forgets what it's like to be a struggling comedian, barely making ends meet and having a dream of her own.To everyone who reads this, try to imagine for a moment that someone was trying to get your attention. They didn't leave you a thousand voicemail messages, texts or emails. They didn't stop by your house or come to your job or talk to your friends and family. They didn't frequent your regular known hangouts trying to catch a glimpse of you or go through your trash just to get a whiff of your underwear. No, instead they threw a party in your honor and hoped that you heard about it. That they had people generously donate art dedicated to you and a whole wall of art was erected in your honor and a hoarde of people showed up to breathe it all in. Try to imagine that all of this beautiful art would be auctioned off and the proceeds were in turn donated to a cause that you believe in. A night of song, creativity, friends and smiles was had all to get your attention and the world was a better place for it. If that was done for you, how would you feel?I don't know about you, but I would be flattered beyond words and I would be eager to meet this person and hope that their positive energy would touch me. The good part of all of this is that I have no reservations about what's really going on with Renda and his dream. I have seen it come to fruition and had the pleasure of the man's friendship for somewhere around five years now. There isn't a doubt in my mind that this guy has changed, and will continue to change the world in the form of an imprint of a kind soul, one poetic moment after another. This guy eats, sleeps and breathes creative passion. I am a professional artist and I could only hope to have a fire burn inside of myself as it does this man. I understand that behind every person who bears fruit that can do good in the world is a pack of haters. All of these negative comments on here only prove to me that my friend Renda is on the right path. People hate for many reasons; cause they see someone doing something they can't, because someone else has a drive that they do not possess. Whatever your reasons may be, oh glorious haters, please make it rain with your negative comments. After all, it is the heads of all of you who have been robbed of your own ambition that will pave the path to our destiny. So hate on, haters. Renda, I love you bro!My name is Kyle Robert Willis and I would gladly hear what you would like to say to me, so feel free to eMail me at LACT@notjustapen.net

Renda -- you're like one of those inflatableclowns that pops back up whenever you try to punch it down. I don't get why youlove Ellen so, but your hope-springs-eternal attitude is inspiring. Keep it up,dude. Personally, I’m rooting for you.

I know Renda Writer somewhat and he is not a stalker or self serving. I believe that the goal he has set to read his poem on her show is not only for himself but to inspire others not to give up on thier dreams and to show them that if you are dedicated enough and work hard enough you can achive your goals. He is not just asking for something and hoping to get it, he is working hard toward that goal and in the process supporting charity and local artists, both positive things. The Ellen Art Show event was meant to flatter her and honor her so it was a little disheartening to hear her criticize the whole thing and say "don't do it again" and I do believe that Renda's name should of been said and possibly the name of the charity as well. And while yes it did also serve as a step to him reaching his goal it still was a positive and good thing to do. I do think that if and when the day comes that Renda is on the show reading his poem, a  bunch of people who may of otherwise given up will say "Hey, if he can set a goal and reach it, then so can I."

The way I see it is this: Renda is bombarding her relentlessly. From the perspective of his supporters, he is a hard worker and passionate about his craft. But to a celebrity in the public eye this is cause for concern. This is the kind of thing stalkers do. It starts with adulation, and then when the stalker is rejected, they become resentful and turn on the celebrity they once admired. I'm not saying Renda is a stalker...but it would certainly look that way from Ellen's point of view. No matter how well meaning, the bottom line is she is receiving a lot of unwanted attention from a complete stranger. That would scare the hell out of me.

I have no use for the woman after she trashed the entire field of illustration and caricature because she didn't like the way someone had drawn her in a magazine. Paraphrasing here, but her response was along the lines of "why are these magazines hiring artists... just run a photograph!". The ISCA (international society of caricature artists) reached out to her, with a slew of amazing caricatures of the woman to try to elicit some kind of a retraction and there was NO response. A side note... one of the ISCA caricatures, probably the best one, by an artist named Court Jones, has found new life in Renda's latest showing, as one of his artists did a poor man's rip-off of it.

This is tragically compelling.

thanks for the support Alexxi'm in your corner toointeresting how the goal of performing a love poem and bringing more attention to the concept and importance of love brings on attention from haters - but i guess that's just what they do

Renda,            I've always been a fan of Ellen's but I was so completely turned off by her reaction to the art and the fact that she couldn't at least mention your name. I think that maybe she's become such an icon within the talk show world that she's lost a bit of her humanness.

You've spent 90 percent of your time here in South Florida promoting other artists and your day should come. I would attempt to promote yourself as the promoter of others. IF Ellen knew what you've done to highlight the work and talents of local artists, she may see you in a different light.I think Ellen needs to be the hero and so she seeks out the down in their luck folks- Her entourage do the seeking and discovering.

Hang in there Renda...You're good people.

" resentful and turn on the celebrity"  ha ha  I think your Nuts! He has been nothing but delightful towards Ellen since day 1.

Celebrities get unwanted attention all the time, its the nature of the beast. People go and see their favorite celebrities all the time, its how their careers are made. So to say Renda is "stalking" in way is totally un called for. I think Renda is doing something great because he is promoting art in a positive way, getting the community involved and showing everyone how great Ellen is. And if the sole purpose is only so he could read one of his poems on her show, I think he deserves it.

If you really truly want to follow your dreams, and strive to succeed in this world it's important to go for it 100%, give it all you got, keep it positive and bring up the community around you in the process.

Sure you will get people saying negative things and also positive things about you, but thats the beauty about in a way..He is making some noise by sharing his story in a positive way..Props to you Renda

He is also taking advantage of these artists by telling them he will get them notoriety. This is only about him. His goal, his dream to be on Ellen. For what, 15 minutes of fame by using people and thier emotions to help him. News flash Mr Writtr, Ellen didn't get to where she is by being dumb.

I'm definitely not nuts. For the third time, I didn't say *HE* is a stalker. I said that is the pattern of a stalker, and one that celebrities look out for. I didn't say he was behaving that way...I said that is what is expected in a situation such as this. I am ALL FOR positive in/positive out, and I firmly believe in the same concept we all know so well from The Secret: If you envision your goal and act like it's a reality, it will become one. I adamantly support the local scene and all artists in South Florida. I just see things from a different point of view.

CORRECT...but there is a difference between run-of-the-mill unwanted attention, and the level this has gotten to now. It isn't just "going to see" your favorite celebrity. It's obsessively devoting all time/energy/resources to her. There's a HUGE difference.

Everyone in the entertainment industry knows the proper channels to go through for things like getting booked as a guest on a talk show.

I didn't say he was a stalker, I said this type of behavior is perceived as such by someone in the industry...and Renda should know that.

I was featured in both the first and the 2nd Ellen Art Shows, and my name was plastered over more websites, flyers, posters and videos than one would believe. Renda takes no credit for this, only when he takes the stage becomes alive and is elated to do what he is passionate about, and that is performing poetry. He doesn't care about the limelight or the press, he is moving forward; a tenacity which doesn't belie any weird adulation or stalker-esque behavior. Whoever wrote that is a laughable human being and their idiotic paragraph has already been disregarded. Renda has never promised any artist something that he couldn't or wouldn't deliver. I think you have your information crooked. Maybe you need to do more reading and a bit less writing.Renda Writer already is famous, and hundreds of people in the music/art scene know his name across several states. He has helped, supported and promoted the careers of thousands of people. What have you done? I mean besides hate on someone you know nothing about on an online forum.

If you watch the video, you will see that not only did Mr Writer get the paintings on her show, He made sure to attach artist info And She said the ARTIST names. NOT HIS. Have you heard Mr Writer complain even once about her not saying HIS name?  I am DJ Stevie D and i was There.

What makes you think that in addition to these more creative efforts, I am not also going through the proper channels for getting booked?  Do you really think that I would openly promote and publicize all of the more traditional things I'm doing to get on the show as much as the creative things?

I did not quit my job as WeMerge Magazine Chief Editor for that reason. One more time.I did not quit my job as WeMerge Magazine Chief Editor for that reason. In fact it was not even really a job.  I never got paid.  I got paid nothing at all and spent 4 years tirelessly promoting the heck out of every artist in South Florida except for me.

Not to mention that he quit his job as WeMerge's editor in chief to persue his way onto her show.

There's passion, then there's weird.

Devotion to something you strive for is part of following your dreams...And im sure if it was as easy as booking a spot on her show to get one, Renda would've done it already..Renda is not well known, so he can't just call them up and say hey, let me read my poem on your show...You gotta make some noise and get her attention 1st..and the fact that the art show was for charity and promoting ellen in a positive way shows that his intentions are good hearted or rather, "half hearted"!  ;)
