Odd Future's got a new video that is like a dumber, goofier cousin of "Black Hole Sun." The song is "Rella," and it is not the problem. The video is... well, let's just say that it made us wonder about a few things.
Since Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All popped up on the scene, there's been no denying that there's something different about them. They exemplify everything wrong and some things right about the millennials. They have this nothing-is-good-enough, hipster hip-hop aesthetic, mixed with the attitude of a cowardly Johnny Knoxville and the most ornery asshole skater kid that you knew as a kid.
There's no need to repeat Steve Albini's assessment of the group in which he called them "assholes making music about being assholes." These guys are a handful. Even Tyler the Creator's response on Twitter was vile: "Me Nor Anyone i Know In My Age Group Know Who You Are, Old Ass." Really?
Maybe we're old Albini farts, but Odd Future manages to amuse and also disgust. Now to asking those questions about "Rella."
Chicken and Egg
Is it that the woman's thighs are causing an earthquake, or is there an earthquake causing the woman's ass to jiggle?
How is it that Hodgy Beats ejaculates both crude oil and some sort of magic that turns people into their kitty cat selves?
Who You Callin' Queer?
What's with the wigs? If you wear a wig designed for a woman, does that define you as a cross-dresser?
Just Plain Old Wrong
Is he slapping the black off of that girl? And then she becomes Asian? Should he be slapping her at all? Is the answer to that one too obvious?
But for Real
Is there any depth to this narrative?
Party Fantasy Creature
Why is Tyler the Creator a blow-loving fem centaur? Is he really an old angry raver?
