Mega-huge names like Skrillex might get a lot of the mainstream dubstep shine, but right on their tails is buddy 12th Planet. And without him, there might be no American dubstep scene as we currently know it. As cofounder of the early L.A. dubstep weekly Pure Filth and the label Smog, 12th Planet, born John Dadzie, was one of the earliest proponents of the sound on our continent. (Click here to read an interview with 12th Planet in Miami New Times last year.)

As his slightly younger friends have scored acclaim, though, 12th Planet himself has enjoyed his own soaring popularity. This is in great part thanks to his live performances, which are part DJ set, all ruckus, full of wall-rumbling bass drops and an infectious party atmosphere.

A proper debut artist album is still in the works, but to celebrate the kickoff of his Scion-sponsored tour, he's dropped a freebie EP dubbed The End Is Near! as well as a video for the title track. As you'd think from that name, it's a slab of apocalyptic stuff, full of the heavy rumbling that defines a certain, au courant SoCal dubstep sound.

Check out the video and download the EP below, and head out to see 12th Planet this Friday, when he headlines Revolution with fellow California friend Flinch. Flinch too is one of Smog's important early names, so if you're unfamiliar, get schooled. If there is any fairness in the music world (ha ha), these two will be the big next bass-music crossover names to watch.

12th Planet, with Flinch, and Kastle. 10 p.m. Friday, February 3, at Revolution, 100 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $15.90 with fees; age 18 and up. Click here.
