Train's "Drive By" Beats "Hey Soul Sister" But That's About It

Train-Drive_By.jpg
Probably the most truthful representation of depth of the Train aesthetic is captured in this still from the "Drive-By" promo clip.
Some people reading that headline will probably think they've stumbled upon the ultimate pop song. (Especially Grammy voters.) Yes, Train is back with a brand-new invention, "Drive-By," and it should be nearly as beguiling as their comeback single "Hey Soul Sister" was a couple years ago. Unfortunately, this rings out with a snappy acoustic hook (no ukelele, impressively) that will echo in a Denny's bathroom near you in a couple months -- but that doesn't mean that we have to like it.

For a refresher, read Village Voice's assertion that "Hey Soul Sister" was the worst song of 2010. It'll give you the blow-by-blow of what Train actually sounds like and why that particular song is so unforgivable. And pay attention to the critique "The lyrics represent the weird hippie fantasies of a yuppie toolbag."

Speaking of bags for yuppie tools, these lyrics from "Drive By": "Oh I swear to ya/ I'll be there for ya/ This is not a drive-by/ Just a shy guy/ Looking for a 2-ply Hefty Bag to hold my love/ When you move me/ Everything is groovy/ They don't like it sue me/ Mmm the way you do me..." Plus: "On the other side of a downward spiral/ My love for you went viral." Is the piece of toast in your hand now a ball of mushed up in your fist?

Anyhow, Train drummer Scott Underwood was a pleasant enough guy to talk to recently, but he actually said this: "We were kind of in it for the money. Then we took that break and we found the soul again." A longer break was obviously required. We still can't believe our reporter had the stones to pretend that Weird Al Yankovic created a "Drops of Poopiter" parody.

From Train's site:
As promised earlier this week, we had a little surprise up our sleeves (and some of you were able to figure out what it was, so pat yourself on the back)... We here at Train aren't feeling very patient, so we've decided to let the cat out of the bag early for you. So without further adieu, may we present to you our brand new song "Drive By" from our upcoming new album. We hope you enjoy! Be sure to tell us what you think and we can't wait to play this for you again on the road. The song will be available on iTunes on January 10th!

Your comment reminded me of the Teddy Roosevelt "Man in the Arena" quote.  I think of it every time I need a lift.

What surprises me is Train's continued success on the singles charts, and that's not meant as a putdown, anything but.  I guess every era has a group like them, one that isn't really trendy or fashionable, but somehow gets their stuff on the radio.  They're like the Guess Who of today.

Dead @ the comments supporting Train. I'm sure they're not bad guys, but they are absokute shit when it comes to lyrics. I actually stumbled upon this site while searching the lyrics for Drive By. I was so sure that I coukln't possibly be hearing, "Just a shy guy looking for a two ply..." Oh, but I was hearing that. Jfc, awful, awful, awful.

Yeah I get all of my music info from the Village Voice. Jealous much? This is one band who's been able to survive the death of the good old boy music industry. And Pat is one heck of a writer. Get over it.

This cracked me up. Even as a young pup listening to "Drops of Jupiter" I knew something about the lyrics was horrifyingly nonsensical. This band keeps churning out the lyrically whimsical gems. Keep on truckin, Train!

Um yeah the author's a pretentious cunt, nothing of interest to see here.

Wow.  Not cool at all.  The song is up-beat & fun.  This is one of the few bands that seem to appeal to all generations.  I have been to concerts where parents brought their children.  You are not a fan.  I get that.  There are more fans out there.  I like the song.

I dont agree with any of this. You are not a fan of Train by far and I dont want you to be. Train doesnt need rude people telling them that they are good or not. Yeah Scott is a great and nice person to talk to be guess what so is all the rest of the band members. And one SMART person can look at them and know that their not in it for the money they mightve use to be but they have changed. Pat and the rest of the band are the nicest people out there unlike you. Hey Soul Sister is a great song as well as Drive By and I dont plan to be listening to it in Denny's bathroom I plan to be listening to them as they accept their next Grammy. Thanks but no thanks I dont like you article and I bet tons of other Trainiacs will agree.

Reed you dont know talent when you hear it !!!!! What a jerk you are, very rude. This band has so many fantastic songs, beautiful songs, that many people have never heard, I think you may be one of them. Train has great lyrics, and sometime catchy pop lyrics. What music do you like Reed Fisher?? I think you need to listen to more Train, I promise you'll be hooked!!!

Well I see it like this. You might not like it. But it sounds as if you don't care for TRAIN in general. But a grammy is a grammy and that is as black and white as it gets. That my friend is what the final grade is. Not the opinion of a want to be musician who decides to critique because they can not create!

And that, ladies and gents, is how awesome I am at typing on my phone. I apologize for the mess. :)
